RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me
I have to admit I'm a little stumped on this one. This is what it (normally) looks like out of the box:

Note that the Description box is Schwarzwald and the Tool Tip is Courier New. Your image seems to show the same font in both places. Moreover, yours is showing as bold whereas these aren't.
I've only seen this occur when the specified font isn't installed and Windows picks something close. That's why we went with Courier New though as it comes with Windows. When you look in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts, does it show you Courier New?

I specify Georgia font in my HorseNMusket.ini file (FontName=Georgia) as I prefer the look better. Still though, this only changes the unit description at the bottom. I'll have to think about this...

Do you also put the font name at the "FontName33=" and "FontFileName=" places? Like this:
FontName=Georgia
FontName33=Georgia
FontFileName=Georgia.ttf
Is that how you do it?

I have suggested to do it like that, and you wrote that is nothing better .....
Changes....
RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me
OK. I was wondering if I was doing it wrong. I changed all three when I tried the different fonts. Nothing helped enough.

You don't have to specify the .ttf since it comes with Windows (likely) and FontName33 appears to be a debug hold over. So "FontName=Georgia" should be all you need. Did you notice a different then when you specified this font?
I did some searching for problems with bold text unexpectedly appearing. Apparently it's not altogether uncommon. This is the best explanation/solution that I found. I went through the steps myself and they're safe.
-------------------------------------------------
The problem is due to the fact that the font registry entries have got corrupted. The fonts affected are Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, Marlett, Terminal etc.
The programs like IE, Outlook (in mails) and Firefox fail when they try to locate these fonts. The beauty is that these fonts still exist in the <OS drive>\windows\fonts folder.
To fix this issue follow these steps:
1. Click Start -> Run. If you cannot locate the 'Run' item, then click 'Window Key' + 'R'.
2. In the run box, type: c:\windows\fonts (Replace c: with the drive letter where the OS is installed)
- Can also just open Explorer and traverse to C:\Windows\Fonts
3. The fonts window will open. Click 'Alt' + 'F' to activate the menu. Click 'Install New Font' in the menu.
4. In the folders dialog, browse to c:\windows\fonts where c: is the OS drive letter.
5. All fonts would now appear under 'List all fonts'.
6. Click 'Select All' and then click 'Install'.
7. Confirm the windows permission dialog.
8. A replace file dialog would appear. Click on 'Yes' to each and every dialog that appears. This will ensure that fresh entries for fonts are written in the registry. To avoid clicking, press and hold 'Alt' key - then press 'Y' key for every dialog that appears.

Are you using Windows-7 doing the above? I get no option to "install New Font."

I'm using Windows XP. I'll have to track down a Windows 7 machine...

I've tried at least ten different fonts and they just don't help. The text is unreadable in most places. It's sad because I really want to play this game, but I can't read tooltips most of the time, and menu information.
I have Widescreen monitors and Win7 on all my desktops. I don't know what else to try. The game is unplayable for me at this point. Yes I tried windowed mode and it helped none at all.
I had the same problem (in Win7 32-bit) but I solved it by turning off ClearType text in the Fonts section of the Windows Control Panel.
RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me
I tried that and it made no difference.

Are you running the program in Windows XP compatibility mode? That is what I use.
RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me
I just tried that, thinking hey, you may have something there. Nope, the tooltips that pop up are still unreadable. Dang, this is really maddening. I really appreciate your input here. That was a good idea too.
I have not been able to play this game since I bought it. All text is messed up. The only game this has ever happened to out of hundreds I've played. I have over 50 games on this machine and never had this issue.

RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me
I have the same problems as the OP, with textual content in the game.
It seems on a Windows 7 laptop with a native 1600x900 resolution, even running in Windowed mode, the problem exists. With Georgia set as the font in the ini file, I had slightly better results by turning off ClearType - however the results weren't brilliant - seems to be parts of the font are not rendered properly, both with Georgia and Courier New. However the "bold" effect caused was removed, by removing ClearType effects. Shame it made using the laptop eye-wateringly painful for the rest of the time. And it didn't fully fix the problem with the games text. Sadly.
Here's the main menu - you can see some sort of tearing on the images there..

Here's the main screen showing both texts, info panel and hove over names

Here's the popup menu in game, again you can see some sort of distortion in the text used there

And this is in a Windowed version of the game, where the resolution of the laptop shouldn't affect it. I've tried it with and without XP Compatibility mode.
