Screen resolution for COTD

Frank Hunter's Campaigns on the Danube is an operational study of the campaigns along the Danube in 1805 and 1809. Campaigns on the Danube's system focuses on trying to present the player with the same sort of decisions placed on their historical counterparts; how to feed an army and move that army according to a plan, all the while trying to fight a campaign. There is also an option to allow players to play out the battles with miniatures and input the results.

Screen resolution for COTD

Post by wake »

I just bought the game and I do realize this is an older title...
however the game shows up as a "very" small window in the center of my 3440x1440 monitor.
I see no way to set the resolution in the game so I went into the irunin configuration
file and it shows my screenwidth and screenheight set to the correct values of 3440 and 1440.
I tried to change it to 1920x1080 just to see if I could get it a bit bigger but it did not work.
Any way to change the resolution? and what are the supported resolutions. Thanks for any help.

Make sure you've applied the latest update. Note that when you go to apply the update, you might get a message that you already have the latest version - you don't, unless you've already applied the patch. The version that comes with the purchase download is not the latest version.

The current patch (and a couple prior to this) provide a means in the game settings to change the screen resolution. I can't remember if you can go as high as your current display supports, but it definitely will do at least 1920x1080.

I've got a 24" monitor, and 1920x1080 works great.

Thanks guys,

After installing the game I went to install the patch. The patch install said there was no need to install because I had the latest version of the game 3.04. However I obviously did not. I ran the patch again and even though it still said I had the latest version, this time I went ahead and now I really have 3.04 and I can finally see the options to set the resolution.

Just a note for the developer. I tried the 2560x1440 which was closest to my 3440x1440 resolution. It does not work well at all. it actually produces what is about 960x1440. I then tried the 1920x1440 and the 1920x1200 and both worked very well and so I am good to go.

I have a 3200 by 1800 (laptop) monitor, and the game will only allow me to select a subset of its available resolutions. Most of them simply aren't clickable from the launch menu. The largest one that is is 1440 by 900, which seems to actually take up almost my whole screen excepting a ribbon on the right.

This isn't a huge problem for me, because otherwise the game seems to take up most of the available screen real estate as I said. Just more data.

Edit: every time I try to post a list of the resolutions that are and aren't selectable, some weird forum filter rejects them as phone numbers. Attached a text file list.

By the way, I bought this expressly because of Tim Stone's article on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. I expect any new blood you get will be from that piece!

If some of the game resolution options are not clickable, I guess it is because they are options your display system does not have available.

The clickable subset in your attachment are those resolutions that your display system has available, which match options also available in the game

The laptop I am using now has 7 resolution settings, but only 2 of them match the display options available in the game. Therefore, there are 12 game options, but I only have access to 2 of them.

However the laptop max resolution is 1377x768, which is one of the selectable options, which is OK.

My desktop has more resolution options available, so I get more choice.

Hello! Yes, sorry, I believe my earlier post which the forums ate mentioned that I have updated to the latest version. My resolution selection screen looks just the same as the one chemkid posted (beautiful map mod, by the way).

As far as the monitor/screen not being able to display those resolutions, I cannot imagine that is the problem. First, because the game runs in a window, and all of the given options are smaller than the native 3200 by 1800 resolution. Second, I have run other games in a variety of resolutions, including 1920 by 1080, which is the same ratio as 3200 by 1800, but which CotD doesn't let me run.

As I said, it's not a huge issue for me, since it runs as is, it's just kind of odd.

Installed patch, chose 2560x1440 as resolution, because that is my monitors resolution and it looks like this:

What am I doing wrong?

Yeah, the resolutions printed on the buttons don't seem to correspond to how many pixels they actually end up taking up. Weird.

resolution and monitor/screens do vary tbh, so if a given laptop lets says has a 16.1" display and max screen size for the sake of answering this is 1920x1080, doesn't mean it will work the same as a 19" monitor also with a display set at 1920x1080 either, as more times than not, the laptop for one manufacturer doesn't also follow the correct guides and Current standards as shown

Code: Select all

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution

with some being a pixel out either way which throws the whole image or can do off by enough to alter the display shown.

Problem below solved 6/2/17 --- problem was fonts deleted, resolved by copying fonts from another PC.

I've mucked up my display or font settings so that now I get various blank menus with text missing or wrong size.

So for the screen selection - see post #6 above - I get blank white buttons where the screen sizes are listed; and no text in the scenario selection list. So I have to guess what's in the box or - low tech - made a paper copy of the choices. ditto for the Corps commanders screen.

This has come about through some changes I've done to resolution size or whatever I guess but I have tried re-setting; uninstalling, re-installing, uninstalling , re-installing in a different folder, resetting Windows fonts.

Any ideas guys? I've posted here because it seems related to a screen size issue. Is there a settings file you can edit with notepad?

All my other games appear to work but I do remember a similar issue with text not fitting in menus with Battles from the Bulge and AACW if I set the text size up in windows. But those games seem OK.

It truly is amazing how many hours of life you can use up trying to undo a simple muck up!

It was some Windows fonts, but three years ago so sorry I can't remember.

I think I found the fonts directory (in Windows 8.1) on another PC and copied all the fonts to the same folder in the PC with COTD.
