Ship building as France

Post by cambronne »

I have 2 problems.

1) I am suddenly not allowed to build merchants despite having more than enough of the necessary resources to do so.

2) Why can't I build anything better than a 4th rate ship?
I built my docks up to 7 and have plenty of resources, but my only options are 4th rates.
What am I missing?

Sounds like the mobilization limit kicking in.
You probably have huge armies that are taking up all your mobilization 'space' resulting in your incapability to build ships.
Ships count a lot less towards mobilization (3rd rate counts for 0.1 vs 1.0 for an infantry unit), so getting rid of a few land units should free up lots of space for ship-building.
There might be a top-limit on merchants that could also come in play here - if there is a limit the production menu will say so - I think its the row furthest to the right.

not sure about #2, but at #1 I'm guessing you allready have the max allowed number of merchants (easier to see if you enter the province you want to build in and press the build unit button)

Ok, that makes sense.
Although, I started in 1803 and have never built a land unit, I just keep getting units produced by my protectorates.

If I lower my mobilization rate (presently 7 or 8) will that allow me to build merchants etc?

I will delete a few units as well and see what happens. Thanks.

I am not sure how many merchants I have left. Many of them have been gobbled up along the way, but I will check on that as well.

Thanks.

the note pages you can open and pull down, just at the bottom of the map, look at the 2nd one, it will list supply and costs of units you have/control

it should tell you have many Merchants you own (if you took over some Protectorates, you may also of picked up there merchants, but didn't think they counted against your limit ?)

Protectorate troops shouldn't count against your total

or open the province production screen and open up the production list (really this may be easier)

and look at the list, in my case, I have as many as I can build already, so even if I had more textile, I wouldn't be able to build any more

and, look back at my last screen, I am allowed 85 Mob, I have 81, but look at the totals of my troops, I have alot more then 81 troops, most of those are my Protectorate troops

Oh, my. France has quite a few SOLs, hasn't she...
And I just went to war against her hoping to add a few SOLs to my growing Swedish fleet.
Had no idea France had such a large navy - better call my ships back and send out my diplomat instead...
Maybe if I get the English into the war...

Thank you for the information and the effort in giving that to me.

Protectorates DO count against your total, at least, Polish Lancers prevent me from building more.  But Protectorate (and Feudal Levy) units do not check unit limits before building themselves.

one thing to remember, it is 5 years into the game or so, so I have also picked up a few ships along the way,I know I got the Dane Fleet in there, along with the Vento, and a few I have picked off
