I notice that the files open with notepad in txt format,but everything is all mixed up and out of alinement,In the modders guide the description looks like they have been opened in Microsoft excel ?

In this case would I be better to use microsoft excel as the default programme to alter these files?

Yes, usually I open them with Excel, mod them, and then save them as a.txt file. Much easier.
