A question about adding generals

Post by sallambo »

Hello, I'm new to the forum (though not to Crown of Glory, i've been playing the first game for some time and the Emperor's Edition for a month).

It's one of my favorite games, but I would like to see more generals in the game, so I tried modding the 1812 campaign by adding a lot (I think, more than 100) of historical commanders for all the major powers. Unfortunately, when I tried to play it, something went wrong. Although it did not CTD or something (in fact, it worked vey well), when I saved a game and then tried, the next day, to load it and continue my campaign, it did not load... I restarted the modified campaign, saved once again - and once again it did not load. I did some other experiments, modifying other files and so on, but nothing helped.

Can you tell me what I did wrong? Is there a limit on the number of generals that I don't know of? I've attached the modified file, if it's of any help. Thanks a lot!

Hello, I'm new to the forum (though not to Crown of Glory, i've been playing the first game for some time and the Emperor's Edition for a month).

Unfortunately, when I tried to play it, something went wrong. When you tried to reload the saved scenario, did you get a msg error? If so, it would help to have a screenshot of the msg error you saw.

I haven't heard of a limit to the number of Generals, but there might be one. If so, I'd have thought the scenario wouldn't play from the beginning though.

EDIT: Wow, looked over your file - this is a perfect case of how one student of the period sees some things radically different that another. Some of your changes in terms of General abilities are drastically different than my sense of things. Not saying I'm right, mind you, just pointing out the fact.

A nice mod for those who appreciate lots of Generals - I'm familiar with most you've added. I didn't check entry dates but assuming those are accurate, a nice mod indeed.

Thank you for your answer. I didn't get any error message, unfortunately - my laptop just lagged. I thought it will load eventually, but after half an hour of waiting, I just closed the game from the task manager, because it didn't do anything. I should mention this happened on a pretty decent machine - 2G of RAM with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 - so I don't think it's my computer's fault.

About the generals - I didn't do any kind of "fine tuning", first of all I wanted to see how this works. Mainly, I tried to remove from the file people who shouldn't be there in 1812 (Lannes, Brunswick - the old one, the one who's in my file is his son, Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, who fought for the british - prince Louis of Prussia, Bayraktar Pasha), changed some names (Bulow shouldn't be called Dennewitz before he actually fought the battle of Dennewitz), but mainly add a lot of commanders for everyone. My idea was to get in the game everybody who was active and at least a corps commander in 1812-1813 (I made some exceptions for the british, who otherwise won't get more than 4 or 5 generals). I'm not very sure about the stats, I tried to improve some non-french commanders (for example, I believe that Kutuzov is overrated by 20th century historians in comparison to Barclay, mainly because he received a lot of praise from Soviet historiography; in the 19th century, he was considered mainly lucky - Langeron, for example, was very critical of him). I also put in the game some forgotten generals, like Dumonceau or Fontanelli (in fact, Dumonceau was a marshal in Louis Bonaparte's kingdom, but when he annexed the Netherlands, Napoleon made him only a division general in the French Army).

Unfortunately, my poor attempt at a mod isn't really playable, so all this work (well, not so much work...) was for nothing .
