Great game, but one thing I really don't get...

Step back to the age of Napoleon and travel in the footsteps of this military genius! Napoleon in Italy is a hex based strategy game that includes both the strategic level of movement and logistics combined with playable tactical battles.

Great game, but one thing I really don't get...

First of all, I really enjoy this game that I got from the weekly sale and I will definitely be on the look-out for a sale for For Liberty!!

But one thing is really annoying me about this game: why do I have to decide whether I want to fight a tactical battle or not BEFORE a battle actually occurs?!?
It seems to me like there is no logical reason why I should not be able to decide whether to fight a battle on the spot?
I like to fight the tactical battles for the close ones, but the problem is that a) I don't always know if nearby enemy units will join and b) obviously the enemy phase is unpredictable.

i am not sure i understand exactly what you mean, the way the game is, it seems rather that you choose which army group in your turn that you want to have the option to do the tactical battles for , but do you mean that you want to be able to chooose not to fight at all? I think the only way to do this is if they take to the field then you just retreat all your forces once the battle starts, well at least thats what i was doing. Sorry if i misunderstood your query

No, I mean why when there is a battle can't there just be a window with a decision
"Fight tactical battle OR Auto-resolve"

Why do I have to decide this for each army individually and BEFORE fighting the actual battle, why is there no option to just select it when the battle takes place?

aah, yes i know what you mean there - i am not sure why it was designed this way with selection for tactical and auto resolve being a setting you make for each individual army group . perhaps its just a design that Hussar Games was not sure on how to implement. There previous game 1848 which is free to get from them, did not have any tactical battles it was all just auto resolve so perhaps if they ever make another game it can make the option available at the start of a battle
