AGEOD’S American Civil War - The Blue and the Gray is a historical operational strategy game with a simultaneous turn-based engine (WEGO system) that places players at the head of the USA or CSA during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Curious Newcomer

Post by Grapeshot Bob »

Hi all,

I have scanned through some reviews of this game and many seem to be quite positive. I have some questions that I'd appreciate if anyone could help me with.

1. How good is the AI?

2. I realize that the game can be VERY micro detailed. How easy is it for me (as a beginner) to turn off/allow the computer to handle some of the more esoteric parts of the game? I don't want to necessarily spend my time building cities or messing with too much internal politics at first.

3. Does the demo do the game justice?

Thanks in advance,

(1) It is reputed to be quite good.

(2) You can't really hand off to the computer much of the micromanagement. Of course, you can always avoid some of the micromanagement but perform less well. But, importantly, there is a growing body of campaign and "battle" scenarios of relatively short duration that omit important aspects of the game (e.g., naval ops, long-range production planning, etc.). These are excellent, gentle lead-ins to the full campaign scenarios, and very good entertainment in their own right.

(3) Probably not. (There's so much more to the full game.) But if you don't like the demo, you probably won't like the full game.

Hey,

If this game is a bit intensely involved, can anyone suggest one about the Civil War that might be a bit simpler?

There are no cities you build up, only supply depots and forts. As for politics, no governers to appease. You do pay in national morale depending on volunteer/conscription calls, finance, promoting one general over another to army commander. (You'll pay through the nose to promote anyone over lil Mac's head early on.)
