Victory songs seem switched

Post by satchel »

I've seen one Union victory, and when the game-over victory splash screen came up, "Dixie" was playing in the background. Then, after a Confederate victory, I heard "The Star-spangled Banner." The songs seem to be reversed.

I wonder at "Shall We Gather at the River?" as the intro song. Is it to reflect the evangelical movements active at the time? Or an ironic reference to cross-river faceoffs between the sides? Perhaps it's a simple paean that "Soon our happy hearts will quiver/With the melody of peace." The song was written in 1864.

Ooops, thanks!

SWGatR was indeed written near the end of the Civil War, and was a hymn very much inspired by the war -- I like the lines you mention, and I think that there are a few other evocative ones as well.  We wanted to find an intro theme that didn't represent just the north or south.

Battle Cry of Freedom was written with words for both the South and the North, according to the inside jacket of the book by the same name . . .
