Corp Help

Post by robot »

Hi guys finally giving the game another try. But I have forgotten how and when you can make corps. Does the one who you want as a corp leader have to have certain command points are be a certain rank. And do you need to remove all units he has so as to put divisional leaders in his stack. Thanx for any advice you can give. Also one more thing am having a very hard time getting my units to do amphib movements. Is it four transport points for all artillery are does heavy need more.I think Inf needs four each while calvary needs 5 each. Is it 1862 before you can use any corps by the way.

To answer some of your questions in lieu of someone who is not  a newbie answering, I'm playing my first game and using corps commanders, so I'll give it a whirl.

1.  First, read section 18.3 in the rule book.  It will answer most of your questions.

2.  Here is the part that will answer most of your questions:

Unit commanders with command ratings greater than six are now designated as Corps Commanders. Starting in December 1861 for the Confederates and January 1862 for the Union, Corps Commanders may attach other leaders to assist their units in combat (this attachment does not use up a command point). Corps commanders may only attach leaders with a lower or equal rank and a lower or equal command rating.

3.
No, you do not have to dump a general's units to make him a corps commander.  Simply add subordinate commanders and he in effect becomes a corps commander when you add subordinate commanders.

4.  I'm playing the Confederacy in my first game and will not try to answer an amphibious operations question.

I do have a corps commander question of my own, though.  I'm wondering it using the corps commanders option makes a significant difference in the game or helps one side or the other.

Robot,
The sea lift requirements are correctly stated by you, but I believe that HA needs 12 transport points per unit. I don't know that I've ever seen anybody attempt an amphibious invasion with HA, probably because they'll probably be captured if a retreat is required and the last thing the US needs to do is provide the CS with extra HA.

JW,
IMHO the CSA has better leaders available to promote to corps commanders. My sole criterion their ability to influence infantry units to +4 (effects movement, especially reaction movement, and changes to commit to combat). CSA has at least a dozen. USA has less than half a dozen.

The huge influx of available commander in Dec 1861 can make these better leaders more accessible to the CS.

This suggests to me that the CS definitely benefit from the CSC.

However, the US can fabricate more artillery than the south and when their leaders are promoted to artillery corps commanders, those greater number of Union guns become even more effective.

BTW, when the game starts, identify the Union infantry leaders with a +2 modifier for artillery and use them as the first artillery corps commanders.

Thanks. I didn't figure out the importance of the infantry rating until well into the game. In fact it is early 1864 and I'm really just now getting the hang of the action portion. I'm playing the CSA with the computer controlling production and no fog of war. I'm actually marginally ahead on points right now, as the Union AI is very methodical and slow in its major advances, but then I also have it on an easy setting. So I'm having lots of fun learning. Next game I'm going to put in fog of war and bump up the difficulty and take over control of production and see what happens.
