New to this series - some questions

Post by FroBodine »

I have heard about this series, but never really investigated it much. It does look real good, though.

1. How is the single player? Is there a campaign, or just one-off battles? The game looks like it may be multiplayer focused, so I'm wondering.

2. Is there a good tutorial?

3. How is the manual? Is it comprehensive enough to teach a newbie everything about the game?

4. And, last but not least, is it fun? Is the user interface well done, etc.?

Thanks!

The game comes with singleplayer and multiplayer scenarios and sandbox (custom) battles. There's also a persistent singleplayer and multiplayer "campaign" (meaning sequence of battles w/ carryover) in my mod.

I can't speak on the tutorial as I never used it, but it is pretty extensive.

The manual is quite detailed, but it won't prepare you to be good at multiplayer by itself.

The game absolutely is fun! The user interface isn't the most intuitive at first, but you can customize hotkeys for everything if you care enough, AND customize the toolbar which is the basic in-game UI. And you can get used to it. There are lots of commands you don't need but can use as you become more experienced.

Check out the SOW (Scourge of War) home page, the link to download the free Demo is there. Sorry, I can't provide links yet, still a restricted newbie, even with a Moderator tag.[8|]

Whoops, we put that in place earlier this year to reduce spam posts and forgot to add an exception for moderators. I think you're the first moderator since then with a brand new account. I'll see if we can fix that.

It's very, very good, IMO.

Single-Player is excellent and includes many scenarios and sandbox games. Many people play only SP.
There are good tutorials, at increasing levels of complexity.
The manual is good, and the community even better.
It's great fun and the interface is fine for me, in its vanilla version.

You won't regret it :-)

Additionally,
Once you check out the demo, don't judge the toolbar as set in stone. Some folks find it awkward. And in response, I have worked extensively for a more intuitive toolbar as I loathe relying on keyboard controls. It is part of my Bugles and Flags mod, available for free download. You won't be able to check it out though until you have purchased the full game Gettysburg, or, the upcoming Chancellorsville Battle Pack.

Be careful about buying these games though, as they are highly addictive.[X(]

I own the original SoW but I haven't played it for a long time. Does your SP Campaign work with that, or do I need to own the expansions? Can you post a list of the main Mods you recommend to get the best SoW experience alongside your own? Thanks!
