Disappearing food

Post by Harrybanana »

As the CP I invaded Holland and captured it's capital causing it's surrender. On my way to the capital I captured it's food hex without combat. Fortunately the food hex was not destroyed. However, now a couple turns later the food hex has disappeared. Is this normal or a bug?

Its normal. There's a small chance every turn of captured food hexes becoming exhausted.

Well if it is a small chance then I guess I am just unlucky because the same thing happened with the food hex I captured in Belgium and we are still very early into the game.

Its more the other way around, since the roll is made every turn you'd have to be really lucky not to lose your captured food hexes eventually.

As I understand HarryBanana's entry he made a conquest of Holland with the food resource still intact converting all dutch hexes to German control.

Afterwards the food resource at some time became depleted.

In my experience resources never gets depleted that way? I for one have not experienced such a happening?

Is the roll made every "turn" Frank. or every impulse? You may be right that captured food hexes will disappear eventually; but in my case I had both of them in the last impulse of the Nov/Dec turn and they were both gone by the Jan/Feb strategic phase. In other words they both went pretty quick. Belgium had not yet surrendered, but Holland had.

But Frank, is it possible to deplete captured food hexes in conquered countires, or just unconquered countries?

Both. Whether the country was conquered or whether the food hex was just a conquered hex of a country still fighting there is a 20% chance each turn of that food hex being depleted.

I should add that when barraging a hex that contains food there is a chance of depleting that food based on the number of barrage factors firing.

Making use of captured food was difficult, historically. The winter of 1917/18 was known as "Turnip Winter" in Germany. I guess there's a reason I never liked turnips on Thanksgiving. m

But some countries were integrated in the economies, right?

Like Belgium into Germany => The food stays (and is not marked as captured and thereby divided by 3). Also after the surrender of Romania, the non-dissapeared food hexes are integrated into Austria-Hungary (with full production - again not divied by 3). I think also Holland would be incorporated into Germany's economy.

Questions:
If a captured food hex is depeted can it regenerate later?
does divided by three mean one out of three captured food hexes are useful?

No.

Although I think the rule book says that captured food and resources are divided by 3, in fact they are only divided by 2. However, once a country surrenders it's food and resources are received at full without division. However, apparently the food hexes are still subject to being depleted.

All food hexes except one in Romania are rated at one. One food hex in Romania is rated at two. How does depletion affect this hex?
