Request additional Resolutions For Netbooks

Post by TheBlackhorse »

If at all possible, PLEASE, PLEASE add in resolutions for those of us who use netbooks. GOA lends itself very well to being on a netbook, except that the resolution does not enable it to fit the smaller screens.

Hi,

I've got the game installed and fully showing on my netbook.
There is actally an appropriate 1024x600 screen resolution choice (in later patches), but unfortunately the GOA selection screen itself does not scroll down enough to show these modes if you are using a netbook screen.
It's a catch22!

Solution:

STEP 1: start GOA on a bigger screen, choose the screen choice 1024x600, start a scenario and quit.
Find the file called init.ini in the installation folder (this file holds your selected options such as sounds, default scenario and resolution) and copy it to the same install folder on your netbook.
Alternatively, I've attached my own ini file (just rename it from init.txt to init.ini).

STEP2: start the game. The selection screen will only show the top 2/3rds of its full size. Just select your scenario and other options. You will not see the start button or resolutions, but all the game related options will show.

STEP 3: press alt-f4
That's right, alt-f4. This usually quits a program, but in this case it will start the scenario in all its 1024x600 glory. All the buttons are there and so is the status area at the bottom (where you see the combat results and unit details etc).

Hope this helps,

Win7 works in the same way as winXP, but has the settings a bit more out of sight.

1. Go to the control panel
2. Folder options
3. "View" tab
4. Untick "Hide known file types"

Now the init file should show as init.ini instead of just init
Right click on the file.
Rename.
Delete the ".txt" and replace by ".ini"
That's it!

Now you can tick "Hide known file types" again if you think that looks nicer.

Let me know how this works out for you.

A little off topic but....I run GOA on my eeepc. I just run the game menu in 1024x768 and select the 1024x600 option. Once the game starts, just set the graphics screen back to 1024x600 and bingo. All's well.
eepc also runs
  • WW2 Time of Wrath, but it chugs along a little too much.
  • Advanced Tactics,  but your need to run it in compressed mode 1024x768.
GOA is okay, you don't get much map at that resolution, but the unit movement range is not that great either. If you are looking for other netbook compatible games, you could try Anglo German War, Tacops2, SPWAW, all old games, but none suffer from the screen reduction or low end machine specs.
