4/15/1928 Naval Battle off Soc Trang. Certainly not the most significant combat the turn, but the screenshot is cool because it involves PGs and MSWs which normally don't see action.

Although now relegated to a side show due to the landings at Shikka, what is going on in China is also a "game changer". This involves a major portion of the Allied troops which made a surprise attack across the Yangtze River back in January. It is the railroad crossing between Tsingtao, Tiensin, Nanking, and Karferig. What happened is after about four months of combat, the Japanese North China Army moved into all 6 bordering hexes, thus cutting off their retreat, and is whittling them down. China does not get many mobile units, the strategy here is to destroy them once and for all to limit China's future offensive cabability. Meanwhile, the Kwangtung Army is advancing from the south, and is now sieging Hangchow, which is along the road to Shanghai.

William McKenzie King, in his dual role as Prime Minister and Secretary of State for External Affairs, held a news conference today on the steps of the Parliament Building to address complaints and outrage from British Columbia regarding Merchant Ship sinkings in Provincial waters. "Recently", he began, "The pristine waters of Canada's Pacific Coast, from BC through the Northwest Territories, have become the latest casualty in the conflict between the USA and Japan. Our coastline has been inundated with oil slicks and the remains of seaman from vessels that have been sunk. For both economic and moral reasons, Canada now finds itself in a position of having to clearly communicate to all belligerents that this infringement on our sovereignty will no longer be tolerated.

Therefore, effective immediately, we are announcing the establishment of a Maritime & Economic Security Zone the entire length of our Pacific coastline in order to protect our valuable fisheries and the environment. This zone will require that all shipping transiting these water will be subject to being stopped and searched. Also, vessels will not be allowed to carry cargoes of a military nature that could subject them to attack by any belligerent nation. Furthermore, armed warships will NOT be allowed to transit through the Security Zone unless advanced permission is granted from this department. Any warships found within the Security Zone will be asked to exit the area in question, and an armed escort to open water will be provided, if necessary. His Majesty's Royal Canadian Navy stands ready to enforce this new policy with all the mean at it's disposal. Canada has also made a request for Commonwealth support and resources, and we anticipate that this request will be honored."

The Naval Battle off Iwo Jima was interesting for several reasons. For starters, the BC force actually was looking for trouble off Bonin. Failing to find anything there, they retreated to Iwo Jima, apparently arriving about the same time as the US BBs. In some ways, it was similar to the Naval Battle off August 6, 1927, in which 3 Lexington class BCs took on 2 old IJN dreadnoughts and a predreadnought.

But that’s where the similarities end. In this case, you had 2 brand new No. 13 class BCs (which I consider fast battleships) and 3 brand new DDs facing against 2 predreadnoughts. At 20 years old, the BB New Hampshire was newest predreadnought in the US fleet, but BB Oregon was one of the oldest, commissioned in 1896. The Japanese ships were brand new, none having been in commission more then 2 months, while the US ships probably had more experienced crews.

Overall, the advantage in weaponry and armor seemed to heavily favor the Japanese. So why did it take 3 rounds to sink New Hampshire and the Oregon escaped after the 4th round of combat?

While the Japanese field fearsome 18” guns which do tremendous damage when they hit, their accuracy is terrible. The 12” guns on the New Hampshire have the best accuracy, but pack about a quarter of the punch of the 18” monsters. The most accurate weapons are the torpedoes, and they are the only ones that come even close to the penetration power of the 18” rifles (even though a high percentage of the torpedoes may be duds). In the end, New Hampshire sank after being struck by 37 shells and 5 torpedoes, while Oregon escaped (only to founder 3 days later) after being struck by 33 shells and no torpedoes. Not all of the shell hits were 18”, but while those that were landed were devastating (the game lists 46cm/18” shell hits as causing the losses of both the New Hampshire and Oregon), in the end torpedoes (“the great equalizers”) decided which ship survived and which didn’t immediately after the Iwo Jima battle.
