Chinese airfields (6/7/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

Chinese airfields (6/7/23):

As Allied navy still lacks a carrier, shore land-based airfields are of great importance. One of the strategies to consider is to hug the coastline rather than fight for islands.

Once my troops reach South Korea they will be able to launch torpedo bombers as far south as Hiroshima. For now, Pescadores is a decent start.

Flight L (6/28/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

Flight L (6/28/23):

Flight L is by far the most resilient Allied air unit in the game: it is virtually immortal. Typically shelled into pieces by the end of the second turn in Guam, it comes back from the dead in Pearl Harbor (with 7 planes which quickly expands to 12 if Japanese player took more than one turn bombarding), and, as I just realized, once again in Mare Island (with 7 more).

What starts as just 7 planes is about to be 19 :)

Allied aircraft (6/28/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

Allied aircraft (6/28/23):

With close to 1,000 aircraft sitting idly in the replacement pool, USN is strongly considering consolidating its airwings in order to get more planes in the air.

The upside is that with enough logistics, allied airpower will more than double, as airwings keep getting disbanded and then reformed in 90 days.

The downside is that my top aces may end up getting left out of action if their planes are damaged: a group configured for 15 planes reinforced with 30 "disbanded" ones will not get replacements until it drops below the original 15, resulting in up to 30 pilots being stuck out of a job. A group with 45 pilots but only 15 planes will get experience at 1/3 of the normal rate.

Choices, choices...

A test run showed that at one of my bases I can currently eliminate 1 patrol, 1 fighter, and 2 bomber squadrons - all 4 of which will rejoin their brethren in just 130 days - and the airpower on that base will go from 145 to 198 planes.

The battle for Tuguegarao (6/13/23 - 6/28/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

The battle for Tuguegarao (6/13/23 - 6/28/23):

Here's a quick recap of assault values at Tuguegarao - I am curious as to whether all my guns are doing anything at all:

Date: IJA AV / USA AV

6/13/23: 2679 / 3567
6/14/23: 2668 / 3570
6/15/23: 2665 / 3566
6/16/23: 2653 / 3563
6/17/23: 2647 / 3566
6/18/23: 2639 / 3570
6/19/23: 2631 / 3568
6/20/23: 2626 / 3566
6/21/23: 2623 / 3568
6/22/23: 2618 / 3572
6/23/23: 2611 / 3572
6/24/23: 2604 / 3569
6/25/23: 2593 / 3570
6/26/23: 2584 / 3573
6/27/23: 2583 / 3572

It looks like Allied shells are finally starting to turn the tide of battle - although very, very slowly. This is good news: it's very hard to reinforce that area with more men, as my lines are stretched very thin in places. The fact that IJN is starting to excel in raider warfare is not helping :)

Allied Aircraft Experience (7/13/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

Allied Aircraft Experience (7/13/23):

Despite occasional spotting, airplane experience has not grown much in the last two months, the only exception being C-class blimps as they are scouting the entire mainland Japan now.

On a sidenote, I disbanded Flight L without reforming. It ended up being a 0 plane 0 pilot squad that I could not do anything else with... As soon as I can get another US Marine fighter squad near Flight L/1, I'll take that one out of the equation as well. This game has gone too far to risk file corruption.

Allied Production (7/13/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

Allied Production (7/13/23):

While it is too challenging to calculate how many guns and tanks are lacking on the frontlines, it is nevertheless amazing that 14 months into the war American army is still struggling to equip its divisions with light tanks, 37mm guns, and 80mm mortars. This is an important lesson: it is best to pick which few divisions will be the 'haves' and which not so few will be the 'have nots".

Of course, one should not forget about the few divisions that go with the plentiful 75mm guns versus the rare 37mm ones.

Post by Rysyonok »

USN BB experience growth (5/23/23 - 7/13/23):

Second half of 1923 is typically a very vulnerable time for USN. Operational damages start to creep up; 5 14" dreadnoughts leave for very long - six months, including transit - upgrades. Either I have to stagger and delay those very necessary upgrades, or risk losing my 12" ships to IJN's kaigun.

Name: current daytime / increase since 5/23 / current nighttime / increase since 5/23.

Post by Rysyonok »

The battle for Tuguegarao (6/13/23 - 6/28/23):

Here's a quick recap of assault values at Tuguegarao as the carnage continues:

Date: IJA AV / USA AV

6/13/23: 2679 / 3567 (Too early to attack: 4:3 ratio will mean 0 to 1 odds)
<snip>
6/27/23: 2583 / 3572
6/28/23: 2587 / 3760 (1st regiment of 3rd Division joins the battle)
6/29/23: 2583 / 3758
6/30/23: 2578 / 3760
7/1/23: 2578 / 3758
7/2/23: 2566 / 3760
7/3/23: 2560 / 3761
7/4/23: 2553 / 3754
7/5/23: 2547 / 3751
7/6/23: 2544 / 3757
7/7/23: 2542 / 3754
7/8/23: 2535 / 3754
7/9/23: 2520 / 3759 (As Korean front becomes bloodier, fewer reinforcements make it to Luzon)
7/10/23: 2508 / 3760
7/11/23: 2501 / 3759
7/12/23: 2493 / 3765 (Still too early: 3:2 ratio is still 0 to 1 odds)

Allied Aircraft Experience (10/2/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

Allied Aircraft Experience (10/2/23):

Experience gains in the last three months have been quite subtle; IJN is increasingly using routes south of Amami - Naha line, which is out of reach of my LBA. C-blimps have been relocated to the southernmost tip of Korean peninsula - they are able to cover almost all of Japanese mainland now, however they are but 4 slow zeppelins.

US divisions supply status (10/2/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

US divisions supply status (10/2/23):

Battles in Korea and China have been very bloody; for the first time in this campaign there are no more US infantry squads available, as all recruits are immediately shipped overseas. Of course, 37mm guns are still are very much a prized commodity.

US division: shortage of infantry squads / shortage of 37mm guns / shortage of light tanks

1st Division: 0 / 19 / 11
*No changes in 6 months
2nd Division: 0 / 23 / 14
3rd Division: No data due to being split in three regiments, however it is at least 20 infantry squads short - unlucky meet with IJN AMC raiders
4th Division: 0 / N/A / 6
*Division was badly battered in early stages of the Korean campaign
5th Division: 3 / 21 / 13
6th Division: 5 / 24 / 15
8th Division: 0 / 24 / 15
9th Division : No data due to being split in three regiments
25th (Hawaiian) Division : 60 / 6 / 4
*Division was badly battered defending Shanghai suburbs
26th Division: 0 / 22 / 14
35th Division : No data due to being split in three regiments
36th Division : No data due to being split in three regiments
*Pacific takes a long time to cross...
43rd Division : No data due to being split in three regiments
45th Division: 0 / 24 / 15
92nd Division: 30 / 18 / 12
*Division was badly battered defending Shanghai suburbs
93rd Division : No data due to being split in three regiments

The shortage of 181 37mm guns (or more) indicates that only in April of 1925 will all of my divisions be equipped with them. And with constant fighting we know that's not going to happen.

The shortage of 92 light tanks (or more) indicates that armor equipment needs of US army will not be fulfilled in the timespan of this campaign.

Allied CA/CL experience growth (5/17/23 - 10/14/23):

I have been ignoring my cruisers as of recent - rather unfairly, as it's their convoy raiding skills that have superb recently.

USN CA Charleston: 89 / - / 63 / +1

IJN transport status (10/23/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

As of 10/23/23:

- at least 218 APs and AKs are still reported afloat (verified by name)
- overall, approximately 325 APs and AKs are estimated to be afloat

IJA invasion potential: High
IJA overseas supply capability: High

Edit:

Verified number of Japanese APs and AKs currently afloat is 267. That number will go up as new vessels join the fleet and as more vessels are lost at sea.

IJN submarine status (10/23/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

IJN submarine status (10/23/23):

As of now, IJN operates 22 submarines. They have been mainly spotted west of Japan.

##58, 59, 69, 71 are particularly dangerous as they are equipped with the new 53cm torpedo tubes. With the unfortunate decline in USN ASW capability following losses at Tsingtao and Pusan earlier this month, additional air assets would have to be reassigned from Naval Search to ASW Patrol to compensate.

Hopefully that would result in the fore-mentioned vessels becoming the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th submarines to succumb to bomb blasts in this campaign.
