Cautionaries 1.7-- Canada Wayne versus New York Lee

Post by leehunt27@bloomberg.net »

This is Vlad's The Cautionaries scenario, which is definitely a lot of fun and I recommend you try it. This AAR is written from the American point of view and will include a summary of our mistakes and moments of genius (or luck) in the game!

PLAYERS:
Japan: Wayne Henderson
USA: Lee Hunt

FIRST TWO WEEKS:
MISTAKES MADE SO FAR:

1) As USA I moved all my troops to Manila, where there is plenty of supply but no fortifications. Corregidor would have been the better choice, less supply, but heavier fortifications would let me hold out. Now about 2 weeks into the scenario and Japanese troops have pinned me down in both places so it's only a matter of time before the Americans surrender (see JPEG attached).

2) Don't move Japanese ships through Corregidor without taking control of it first! Wayne lost half a dozen destroyers trying to sneak past the heavy guns....

3) Check your sub ammo levels- they use up those 3 torps pretty fast! And then its a long trip home to Pearl Harbor.

MOMENTS OF GENIUS (or luck):

1) As USA I spread my submarines from Manila out around the different landing points and picked off a number of destroyers and AK's.

2) I loaded my American ships in Manila up with fuel and sent them on a long windy escape, knowing the extra fuel would eventually get them back home. Of course that meant leaving behind my troops, but I'll win the war later and pick them up then :).

3) The Japanese took Wake Island right away and my link to the Philippines is definitely severed, though i wonder if you could manage a supply & 1 regiment laden convoy to get there.

FURTHER UPDATE: July 1922

MANILA: Japanese forces try the too early shock attack and suffer nearly 5,000 casualties. This seems to be a common mistake. Deliberate attacks until the very end I say.

NAVAL UPDATE:

No fleet battles. He's hiding and I've sent Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet and big stick to Palmyra.

The Americans (me) have managed to bring back nearly all the subs to Pearl Harbor. Now my opponent has hinted that he's keeping his fleet in harbor to conserve fuel, so I'm guessing I should dispatch subs the same way Darth Vader dispatched probes in Empire Strikes Back to find the hidden rebel base.

NEW BASE: Palmyra. It appears Midway & Johnson Island will never amount to being serious bases, so I'm loading my troops for Palmyra to build up and then make a move for the next pit stop to Manila.
