Tech Tip

This revised and updated turn-based grand strategy game from the team at AGEOD brings players back to World War I, including both the Eastern and Western fronts and over 4 campaigns and 10 scenarios. As either a member of the Central Powers, the Entente or a neutral nation, players will confront the epic gauntlet of military and political challenges that faced the likes of Kitchener, Joffre, Luddendorf, Clemenceau, Czar Nicholas II or Enver Pasha.

OK commanders, grab onto your rifles for this one.

Turn off your anisotropic filtering on your graphics controller and set it to "application controlled".

I have little idea what anisotropic filtering is, or does. I can't explain why it does any good. I can tell you that I have been (diligently) tinkering with various game and PC settings for hours, and suddenly, it is working great.

I just played all the way (as the CP) through from early Aug '14 to the start of the Nov/Dec. '14 turn with a smooth running game with no crashes. The CPU use was about the same, but Ram use was about 15% lower.

When I closed the game, I did get an error message, but so what-I have a saved game.[:)]

Another : in the Configurator exe, disable music. I and some others had crashes due to the mp3-player "imbedded" in the game. Didn't had any CTD since I disabled it.

I have run a few more tests with the anisotropic filtering, and have confirmed it has eliminated CTD-except while exiting (for nine turns in a row, plus several others for 2 to 3 turns). The difference is easily noticeable in the speed of the game, and the smoothness of cursor use.

By setting this graphics option to “application controlled” during play, my WW1 game is running smooth. I’m using the 104a patch.

If you are still having problems resulting in a CTD, I urge you to try this out-it may do the trick for you. It is easy to do, and undo.

I did some light research into anisotropic filtering. Mixed in with all the tech mumbo jumbo is the statement that it is a “computationally intensive aspect to 3D graphics”. It is an important part of the game.

Thinking about it, it's a tad strange that AF could have any effect on WW1 : it's a 2D game afaik ...[X(]

I am back where I started, with CTD's, but only with resumed games-I have played up to eight turns w/o problems. I can play one full turn of a resumed game, then during the reinforcement phase, down comes the curtain. I had change my settings a few times, and can't get back to where it was functioning.

This evening I installed my new ram; I now have 3 gigs which does make it run faster (loads much faster), but apparently has done nothing to prevent the CTD.
----------------------------------
Edit:
With further tinkering-it is working again w/o CTD. It still has the error on closing though. I am "leaving well enough alone" this time.

For what it is worth; what works on my system is application controlled anisotropic filtering (on both "global and program), and anti virus off.

Hey Maestro, do you go into the control panel to turn of the anisotropic filtering?

I use a NVIDIA 7800. It has a link in the tool tray. The main control page choice from that link is the same as the one in the control panel for "NVIDIA Control Panel", which is under Performance and Maintenance in the CP.

In my configuration window, it is easy to miss the "apply" button, it is down in the right hand corner all by itself-easy to miss after your work in the top left side.
