Newbie AAR

Post by Poliorcetes »

I played all the demo, read some of the AAR's and read the rules. I choose Tanenberg Scenario just to get a grasp of how this will work. I played the Russians.
1st turn - No options but to do the promised attacks with the 2 armies you have. Failed to cross the river and was defeated by Germans with artillery in the "north". I cannot figure out the result system during combat unless my troops get injured. Otherwise the enemy force disappears (no clue what happened to them). I just kept throwing troops in. Unsure what the Commitment rank is for, as I could easily move troops from the rear to the front line.

Reinforcement phase - I could only put 7 troops into my main army (instead of the 12), dumped everything else to get the other 3 armies up to 5.

2nd turn - Main army went "west" and took the port. I detached 1 corps to start converting the railroad. My "southern" army ran into germans and was defeated. I had thrown all the new units and detachments at the German frontier just to scout and 1 corp ended up in Thorn beseiging it.

3rd turn - no reinforcments. I was not allowed to move any armies and couldn't find any buttons to push to figure out what sort of phase I was in so I ended the turn. Germany suddenly won with 1 victory point. I have no clue why.

I'm utterly at a loss as to what happened.

Did Tananberg again as the Germans.  1st turn all troops are locked.  Presumably I needed to plot Interception because the next turn 2 Russian units rush across the river.  I plot movement into their region.  They move before me, ending up in Koningberg.  I figure, no problem, they are isolated and I'll crush them (figure they are the cavalry based on their speed).  Place reinforcements.  But then I can't move.  Next turn, still unable to find a way to move any of my armies.  Game ends Turn 3 as fortress surrenders to the cavalry.

I think of playing another scenario, but then notice Palestine scenario is also a Start August 1914, Ends September 1914.  Why bother to play for 3 turns?

Maybe these are tutorial scenario's, without the tutorial part?????

Do you play with the default rules? True, the first turn the German armies are locked, but they unlock next turn and you should be able to move them at your will. [:)]
I moved my main force directly to Königsberg and were able to repel the Russian attack. Didn't achieve much more in the end and the scenario ended with a draw.

Yes, these very short scenarios don't offer much strategic possibilities. They can be used to get a hang of the basic operations though. Nevertheless I would recommend you to start with a campaign and see how it is going. [:)]
(I am a newbie to the game too btw.)
