a question

Achtung Panzer:Operation Star is an Eastern Front wargame with solid graphics and sprawling battlefields that really emphasize the scope of WWII tank combat. The gameplay is a remarkably realistic turn-based and real-time operational/tactical hybrid wargame that continues the series begun by the acclaimed Achtung Panzer: Kharkov 1943.

Is the difference between orders like hunt, recon, documented anywhere. I mean in practical game terms.

Can not seem to get my troops to enter. Just fought a battle with enemy (ruski) in big school house thou.
While few men, legislators or otherwise, have felt down the years
that they could command ships of the line or marshal air armies
without specialized training, almost any fool has felt in his heart
he could command a regiment.

Defend order will make them enter houses. If you see your men not entering then look for a house they can get in and order the squad to dfened there.

Yes there is a difference. Recon sends a small force out front for instance. Attack your men are more concentrated compared to assault, anyway if you look when you choose a different order you will see the movement icons change like formation and spread and stick to cover etc.

Also, I notice that if I tell tanks to Hunt they often move to covered areas.

Try selecting a group of tanks and issuing a Hunt move order to open ground. If there are woods or low ground nearby the group may move there instead. (I got this to work on some occasions but on others not...)

They do enter buildings but if the building is small, some troops stay outside. I regularly see my troops enter buildings, both with the move order and also with the defend order.

House 1

Deploy mode - a few go inside the house, most stay outside, but once I press return and go to the next phase, they will start occupying the houses.

House 2

Orders mode

A few soldiers were still outdoors, so I:

1. Select Defend order.

2. Select Hide (the button with the man behind a tree).

Right click on the house.

Units enter all nearby buildings, as shown.

They actually enter via the door, so you can plan your entry and exit directions relative to sources of incoming fire...

Hunt, recon, assault, attack, etc are just a predefined set of normal commands: movement type, movement modifier, formation, formation density. All of those are reported in the manual.

Many here are wondering, what do those norman commands actually do. Those can also be found in the manual, but here is a short explanation:

MOVEMENT TYPE
- Move: unit moves in a formation straight to the ordered location.
- Attack: unit moves in a formation to the ordered location, but they can change their movement vector and take initiative. Unit may try to change position for better LOS or flank or chase the enemy. It's all controlled automatically by their A.I.
- March: Unit moves in a formation directly to the ordered location and takes defensive positions around that location.
- Defend: Unit moves to the ordered location as fast as possible without formation and takes defensive positions. This includes going inside the houses! NOTE: You can give this command for units during deployment phase also. When active in deployment phase, you can see a jagged line in front of them (red or green). Red means they cannot dig in and will spread around taking defensive positions using environment. Green means they can dig in and make trenches in that position (only in deployment squares with no dashed line).

FORMATION AND FORMATION DENSITY
- You can change the type of formation that unit(s) try to use when carrying movement orders
- Note: do not use formations in villages or your units may get stuck.

MOVEMENT MODIFIERS: these can modify the movement order you gave to your units.
- On road: All units move on roads or take easiest movement path. Good for fast long-range movement. And for vehicles.
- Vehicles on road (included in the new MAY 2012 update onwards): Only vehicles will use roads or easy routes. Does not have an effect on infantry. Ver, very handy in villages and forests!
- Hidden/Stealth: Units try to move and stay hidden by using terrain and foliage to their advantage. Infantry will move by taking short dashes and fire less.
- Fast: Units move as fast as they can and they fire less. During night vehicles will turn on their headlights to be able to move fast. Note that moving fast will increase fatigue of your infantry. Also moving fast on snow, or on bad terrain makes your infantry momentarily out of breath - this is indicated by the blue movement line turning grey.
- If both hidden/stealth and fast modifier is enabled, your units will move as fast possible using hidden routes. When enemy contact is made, they start moving only by using hidden/stealth modifier effects, but will keep moving fast if they are not under fire/threat.

Also, remember that no matter what command or order you give to your units, they will always have some kind of A.I. taking care of them. You can also attack a position by using any movement command depending whether you want to give your units freedom to act more freely by themselves or not. All the orders are general. Try not to improve results by micromanaging your untis too much. It's no use. That's maybe the most important thing in this game that I have learned.

Once you come out of deploy mode though if given a defend order you will find that they are in the houses.
