Which Game?

Post by sabre1 »

So which game is easier to play, Across the Dnepr 2 or Decisive Battles: Battles in Italy?

I don't own any of the Decisive Battle games, but I did own The Ardennes Ofensive when it came out.

I do own ATD 2.

Thanks for the information.

They are very similair.

Kharkov (ATD2) has a bit more info displayed in certain situations and therefore is a bit easier to play.

It's a difficult question in many respects, I find DBWWII easier to play than Kharkov, but Joe's correct regarding information displays. Another point worth considering might include the number of scenarios and future plans:

- Kharkov is the system for the future, so any new scenarios and games that might be in the pipeline are likely to be in this format.
- On the Run 5 site there are user made scenarios, and there are many for Battles in Italy but rather fewer for Kharkov (although Peteau who posts on this site and Run 5 appears to have turned into a scenario production facility and is churning out some excellent work). Battles in Italy follows on as I'm sure you're aware from Korsun Pocket and Battles in Normandy (in order of release).

Yep, I was aware. I don't own BII or BIN, and was curious about the learning curve plain and simple.

Thanks for the info guys.

I would have been unsure how to answer this question a few months ago but now I'd strongly recommend Kharkov mainly since Pete AU and ComradeP are porting older scenarios to Kharkov. That gives you the best of all worlds - newest game engine + lots of ported scenarios in the pipeline I would guess.

For clarity's sake: Pete is designing new scenarios and has offered to help me with the unit counters for the scenarios I intend to port. I'll be the one doing the porting. The scenarios will use the same map and more or less the same OOB (divisions won't be limited to 4 units and will have a full complement of support units, naturally, but the actual number of divisions shouldn't be different unless there were OOB errors in the original scenario), but with the Kharkov/ATD2 features, the way the scenarios play should be quite different from the originals. Pete might redo/port Sealion, though.

Current candidates for porting:

BiI's Fall Gelb and Kharkov 1943 (scenarios I've already edited for BiI), possibly On to Rome/Churchill's plan.
Possibly Korsun Pocket.
BiN's On To Paris, possibly Kursk although that will be very tricky.

With a bit of luck, the first scenario(s) will be ready in a couple of weeks if everything goes well. I initially hoped to have ported some already, but PBEMs and testing WitE are consuming most of my spare time currently.

I have been playing around with Battles In Normandy and I'm starting to get the hang of it.  Doggone it, I want this AND War in the East.  What to do.

Get both.

In contradiction to other, rather generic feeling operational wargames, the hand-drawn map and unit counters of AtD II divulges an atmosphere of actually "being there. It's a greate game, at least being played from Axis side.

WiTE will become better, but settle for a christmas relase at the earliest and maybe even postponed to next year.

I think I'm going to wait and possibly buy BiI on sale, hopefully, during the Christmas season. Then I'll reevaluate what I can and cannot buy and what is available.

Just so you're aware the newer games: Battlefront, Kharkov/ATD2 use a very different system that I've grown to like better than the older games (BiI, BiN, Korsun)

You didn't ask but my rank ordering with best on top would be:
Fall Gelb
Kharkov 43
Korsun Pocket
OTP
the rest
