Search after carrier lost

Post by OldBoney »

I noticed that after an allied carrier is lost the TG retains it's air search capability. It still has the rosette but the carrier and strike buttons aren't active. The planes continue to take off and return. I've seen this several times and in different scenarios since the patch. I have a save that shows air search based on a TG reduced to destroyers.

I just noticed that the TG generating the search has range circles consistent with a Dauntless Squad. Is this suppose to work this way?

Found the issue - more display than anything else. No new searchplanes were being sent out, but the search rose was still shown. The planes leaving the taskgroup were actually attempting to find a new base of ops. I've added some extra text in the report screen to indicate this, as well as changing the colors of planes that are flying to a new base of ops to make it a little more obvious about whats happening.

Dont we have the ability to control surface ship search/float planes? The loss of a carrier doesnt necessarily mean you've completely lost all search ability does it?

No, if you have search capable planes on capital ships, they will search as normal. In fact, they are used before carrier planes, so depending on the TG, you may not lose any search ability.

In the game scenarios I believe that only the Japanese have capital ships with search capable planes. I think this is because the USN float planes were used for gunfire spotting, not scouting. When radar took over the spotting role, US floatplanes were deleted. The Japanese preferred to use ship based float planes for recon and save their scout bombers for strikes. With the editor you should be able to give the USN search capable float planes to see what might have happened.

That is correct, the two sides had completely different doctrines for the use of the floatplanes on their capital ships. If you wish to give the US a similar capability, you can create some planes and squadrons in the editor and assign them to ships.

Not trying to go further off topic, but radar at its best only has a range limit of line of sight to the horizon.  It just wouldnt have the range of a search plane.

By gunfire spotting I meant adjusting the fall of shot from the ship's main battery. You're correct about the range of radar, but the spotting problem is short range. At any rate they didn't phase the float planes out until the end of the war.
