Mario - Would you be happy playing that scenario as US with NO search planes? If I play the USN one day, I will do my best to never be in that situation because I don't have search planes on my CA [:)] Good job with the maps Gen.

Interesting....the USN Surface Fleet search plane rule.....planes or no planes?
Mario(IJN) says should be no planes, R_R (USN) says should be full 22 search planes.
What would your comments be if you had to switch sides?
Mario - Would you be happy playing that scenario as US with NO search planes?
IMO, I had to compromise and hense why I gave the US limited search with 6 search planes.

I'd be fine playing against the US with that many search planes as long as they had realistically short range, like an actual float plane. They were alright, but they weren't Catalinas or SBDs. As far as the US not using them as scouts, I belive that to be more of a function of either fighting at night (Solomons campaign) or always having carriers at hand (The rest of the war). Having those planes was the only reason I even contemplated running in on him like that, if I hadn't any search planes I would have turned around and sailed right back off the map account having effectively no chance to locate him before bad stuff happens.

my comments on Saipan battle.....

Well, as USN Fleet Admiral, maybe a should have cancelled the operation. Then the scenario would have never been created. I take full responsibility for the results. Random_Rail acted corrected, per my orders, but we just didn't get the results that we wanted. If I had the time, would have been nice to replay the scenario a few times to see if results could have been better. As far as search planes, I feel that the US surface TGs should have search planes. In the current campaign, the US only has 1 CV in play so far. So if I want more than 1 operation, its going to be without CV air.

TURN 2 - End of Turn USN ship movement

Saipan force to Guam, Midway force splits (CV, 2 BB, 2CA to Wake & the rest back to Pearl)

Don't beat yourself up too bad Rah. I know the strategic situation as well as you do, and I made a conscious decision to bet some cruisers against maybe getting to put a dent in the Jap carrier and capital ships, and prevent the reinforcement of Saipan so it would be an easier mark later. Didn't work out. Long run, I figure 4 CAs is a loss we can live with though. I didn't bet the entire farm, just the back 40 that floods all the time, and is full of rocks.[:)]

TURN 3 - IJN Operational Movement (Part 2 - Warships) unlimited movement from home port

Sending naval forces to cover Guam invasion, support Yap, patrol Wake for enemy, and small group stays put at home (if needed for reaction phase to Iwo for support).

Turn 3 - USN Operational Movement (Inf/Air move 2 & home port warships unlimited)

As US, I figure that I have 3 options (since I now have 3 CVs).....and choose the 3rd one

1) Defend Guam. I would love to try and save Guam. Its a nice thorn in Japan's side. But I don't think I would get a good CV vs CV ratio. 3 US CVs vs possible 5 IJN CVs. So thats a no go.

2) Reinforce US bases only. Could do this, but current bases seem to have enough Marine and Air units already on the bases. Plus, not many IJN marines in play also.

3) Invade SouthEast Japanese islands. So with not many IJN marines on the map, I like the idea of being aggresive and keeping pressure on Japan. Both Truk and Kwajalein are open for invasion.

Tarawa 2 marines to Truk, Midway 2 marines to Kwajalein, & Pearl marine to Tarawa. I split the Pearl naval forces into 2 groups. To Truk - Yorktown, 3 BBs, 2 CAs & To Kwajalein - Hornet, 4 BBs, 2 CAs.

Addition - (not in pic) Pearl - 2 Air to Tarawa

Turn 3 - IJN Reaction Movement Phase (any warships still in port/base can move - max 2)

I decide to counter both US invasions of Truk and Kwajalein. I have 4 CV TFs that can react. Shokaku TF at Saipan, Zuikaku and Akagi TF at Truk, and Kaga TF at Kwajalein. I will split the Truk forces to make 2 equal groups(basically 2CVs 2BBs 3CAs) for Truk and Kwaj.

I also move the Home Port CVL TF to cover the Marine/Air units to Iwo.

TURN 3 - After the movement phases, there are 4 possible battles.
Random draw determines which battle to address first.
1-Wake, 2-Truk, 3-Kwajalein, and 4-Guam

EARLY WITHDRAWL PHASE (random draw determines which side chooses early withdrawl first)

1 - Wake No Battle ( USN cannot withdrawl since no ships in area / IJN withdraws)

2 - Truk Battle Proceeds ( USN wants battle / IJN wants battle)

3 - Kwajalein No Battle (IJN wants battle area / USN withdraws)

4 - Guam Battle Proceeds ( USN no choice / IJN wants battle )

So now there only 2 battles for Turn 3: Truk and then Guam.

BREAKING NEWS!!!! The Turn 3 Truk Battle has been canceled. For the IJN, Mario_Vallee was assigned to the battle. For the USN, Random_Rail was assigned to the battle. But after reviewing the OOB, Random_Rail(USN) decided on Early Withdrawl. Truk stays in Japanese hands. So on now to the Guam battle........
