How did you all learn this game..WOW

Battles In Normandy is the third game in the Decisive Battles game series. Battles in Normandy recreates all aspects of the Normandy campaign, from the landings on the first day to the final climax of the campaign at Falaise. Strategic Studies Group rewrote the Decisive Battles game engine for Battles in Normandy with a host of new special rules for amphibious and airborne operations, plus a huge number of other enhancements.

How did you all learn this game..WOW

Post by pvthudson01 »

Hey all I am about to jump into the BIn arena and pick this game up

I downloaded the demo and printed out the manual and tutorial and have been reading it ahead of time.

Wow this game is complicated. Little supply truck buttons and burst radius supply coverage holy cow.

But I shall not be daunted. I was wondering, are their any websites that have "clubs" for this? By that I mean places where dedicated players play and help new users?

I used to be a total TOAOW head, I loved that game and still havent found one that is better. But I hear that these games are better. Are there any plans to allow the system to cover the ENTIRE eastern front, not just Korsun or its expansion?

Anyway I just want to make sure before I get this that there are dedicated players for this

The way to improve your play is to take advantage of the features of the game. Every feature is mentioned somewhere in the manual. Two that immedaintly come to mind:

Shock attack (which can be countered by shock defense).

Attack from multiple sides to gain more shifts. And there is a defense in terms of “steps” to counter this.

And many more features. Its not so complex because the computer does most of the hard work.

The good players use every feature just right every tunrn and every error is pounced upon by an opponent.

Another feature good players employ:

Presume 2 units are stacked together and they are attacked. The result is one step loss.

The unit with the most no. of steps loses the step. If both units have equal steps, the one with the weakest defense loses the step. You can use this to your advantage to save good units from taking losses.

The rules arent that hard really. Supply is one of the more confusing things in the game, but ones you get it, it all makes sense.

If you think BIN is hard try out WITP or UV [:D]

Those are not games but simulations or close to it [X(]

The best way I've learned is to play a human and learn from your mistakes :) I should know because I've made a lot!

Another useful tip is always consider retreat routes. Don't get mech caught in a swamp without a road out. Don't let AA and AT get caught without a road to retreat (if they go out of supply they will be left behind) Don't leave only enough room that only part of a stack can retreat, leaving stragglers which may get overrun.

Sometimes you may (ie at Pegisus bridge) want to stack up all of a hexes retreat routes when a situation is critical, in effect refusing a retreat. However, I would never recomend this without a careful consideration if the situation. And would recomend it only with elete troops.

And remember to rest the troops sometimes by not moving them at all, to build up reserve op's. Useful both in attack and defence.
