Also check out:

"Ostfront 1944" by Alex Buchner.
"Scorched Earth" by Paul Carrel
"SS the Blood Soaked Soil" by someone as going from memory here!

Osprey's Ostfront which covers the entire war in the east in general detail, gives the campaign a bare paragraph.

The other texts above which I also own, give a meaty chapter. However, following these narratives with poor maps is not an easy thing. Scorched Earth is the most entertaining of the bunch and a good account of the Russian Front from Kursk 43 to Bagration 44, otherwise.

Hell's gate in the sole speicalist text and whilst I don't own it, I have heard it is very German oriented - a great surprise really considering the opportunities to have researched the subject from the Soviet pov too in this era of David Glantz.

You could also pick up HPS's Panzer Campaigns Korsun 44 which gives a good coverage in its designer's notes plus the article by Wild Bill Wilder now posted at the Wargamer. The other attraction of this avenue of course, other than playing the battle at the battalion level to compliment KP and visa-versa, will be Mike Avanzini's superb campaign maps.

I'll check some of these out. I was hoping there was the definitive one volume that only centered on this battle (good maps, oobs, etc...).

I can confirm that "Hells Gate" is a pretty definitive account of the battle, giving almost an hour-by-hour and sector-by sector analysis of the battle complete with maps and and OOB's.

It is expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for.

Agreed - it is hard to find a more compelling, detailed study of the battle.

I searched for this book on the internet and of all places I found it at a good price at walmart.com ... I didn't even know you could buy books from walmart on-line.

I'll probably have to get this one or ... ... ?! ... put it on my xmas list ... hehe

That's amazing. I had to check that out for myself and there it was. As the one who originally mentioned it I will second all the other positive comments. It does go into more detail on the german side but is a superb source that I have gone back to many times since getting the game.

This is the best book you can get for this battle.Although it is out of print at amazon,etc there are still some places that still have copies..

From what I've read, "Hell's Gate" is the best book on this battle. The problem, as stated is that its out of print. I wanted it so bad I searched for a used version and you will have to pay at least $140 someodd bucks for it ... used!! You can do a search on Amazon or Barnes and Noble and find it. They have used book search engines. The first place me and my wife found it was at Borders Books and at WalMart Online (of all places) and it was only listed at around $65 new. But when the order was placed the reply was that it was out of stock.

Good luck ... let us know if you find a less expensive source for this much sought after book.

I got Paul Carells "Hitlers War on Russia Vol 2 (Scorched Earth) from the Library and got a very good take on the battle but equally the build up and aftermath. Recommended.
