What scenerios would you like to see?

Korsun Pocket is a the second game using the award winning SSG Decisive Battles game engine. Korsun Pocket recreates the desperate German attempt to escape encirclement on the Russian Front early in 1944. The battle is a tense and exciting struggle, with neither side having a decisive advantage, as the Russians struggle to form the pocket, then try to resist successive German rescue efforts and last ditch attempts at breakout.

What scenerios would you like to see?

Post by BrubakerII »

As you know Korsun Pocket will ship with a full scenerio editor. It will also have an updated version of the Ardennes and some other campaigns as well. What campaigns would you like to see portrayed in the game/what campaigns do you think suited to the game?

For me, due to the scale of the game and the popularity of said battles, I would like to see the following. Please don't groan if I am not being original :) :
  • Full Normandy Campaign
  • Full Market Garden Campaign
  • Italy Campaign (though perhaps not suited to the game engine)
  • Africa Campaign
  • Stalingrad Campaign
  • Kursk Campaign
  • 1940 French Campaign?

As I said I am not being original but these camapigns/Operations are both well known and to my knowledge size wise suited to the game engine. On the Russian Campaigns perhaps a whole sub-game could be developed featuring a dozen or more of the critical battles?

I agree Nth Africa would be good. I imagine there would need to be dozens of small units representing recon elements as such in order to keep suplly lines open etc. I think Atomic did this quite well in their Op Crusader game where their were both dummy units and indiviual companies for some units.

Here is an original suggestion for ya: Continuation War 1941-1944. Oh sh*t... Last time I said something like this I had to do it myself so don't you try to make me - because I have commitments. Or, you know, something. Hey! I like to play every once in a while too! You start one of these projects and you can kiss your gaming time, your sack time and your cuddle time w/ girlfriend goodbye. Oh no, not me. I'm going to sit tight and wait for a polished campaign from someone less selfish.

I am Russian so my English is not very good.

I think that Campaign 1941 in the Russia can be very interesting.

There are large amounts of troops, large spaces of Russia, large German plans. It can be very interesting to play for both sides in this campaign.

Game or system?

Post by SwampYankee68 »

Is this going to be a game on the battles around the Korsun pocket, or a system such as Battlefields!? I don't understand how a game about the East Front would have N. Africa scenarios. I'm not opposed to it, just puzzled by that. While I'm posting, I have read about this game on its site so I understand that it is operational. Therefore I am assuming the maneuver elements will be Battalions. Is that correct? One last question. A friend told me he played the Ardennes game and liked it. What are the improvements of Korsun as compared to the last game?
Thanks.

Hi

This game comes with an editor so the guys were just talking about which battles they would like to see beeing made.

I would say (just like with TAO) that we are moving with Regiment sized units.

Please correct me if I'm wrong

Cheers

This is exactly right. I was just postulating what campaigns/battles could be made by an enterprising 'modder'.

I would say (just like with TAO) that we are moving with Regiment sized units.

Regiment and Battalion, though mostly the former. I don't see why a unit couldnt be made anything really if the editor is flexible enough.

I think the email system will rock! Also the game engine will be completely windows friendly unlike the original which was a pretty much a low spec dos game. Because it will ship with a scenerio editor I also think a large community will build up based on user-battles and scenerios. Woohoo!

I know what you mean:D Honestly though some UV patches have been tough but otherwise I enjoy every minute of beeing apart of the UV/WITP team.

Yet another question....

Post by SwampYankee68 »

So essentially this game will be an alternative to Battlefields! ? As I understand Battlefields! it will model how orders are followed differently from the more traditional WWII wargames. I assume that KG will be more traditional. How does KG compare to the V4V series?

I appreciate being brought up to speed, guys.

Why dont you download TAO 2 and see for yourself? Its the same engine as in Korsun (TAO 3) which has some new improvements.

Scenario Editor

Post by Ralph1961 »

I would think that SSG and Matrix would give the scenario editor limited flexability. What I mean is that they would take the route of the Panzer Campaigns games and allow "what-if" scenarios of Korsun variants. They could limit terrain tiles, maps etc. so that down the road they could market and sell a series of Decisive Battles to help recoup all of the money they have spent on the KP game engine.
I would not mind this approach if it means great quality Decisive Battles for at least another 4-5 games.
If they allow a full-fleged editor then they have gambled all of the marbles on KP with little hope of squeezing extra dollars out of the KP game engine down the road. I know some wargamers out there cringe at the thought of shelling out hard earned bucks but remember that SSG has put the money where the mouth is since the release of TAO in 1997. To insure quality games in the future they like the rest of us must earn a decent return on there investment.

Firstly for Swampee I think you will find (and this is by no means gospel) that although battlefields and Korsun Pocket look superficially similar, that Battlefields! will require a higher technical understanding than KP will. It might be fair to compar Battlefields! in that way to Uncommon Valour.

Korsun Pocket on the other hand, while still portraying all the necessary complexities, hides them much more and in this way is probably more accessible to the beginning player. Is this diplomatic enough? :)

I loved V4V and W@W in solo play, but found them so complex they took forever to move in turns in h2h play. The Decisive Battles series on the other hand allows you to get right into those grand strategic struggles against your buddy, without having to take a course in Tactical Planning in the mean time.

To use an Australian axiom, it is 'horses for courses'. Both will be great games but for different reasons.

And for Ralph, though I hope you are wrong :D what you say makes perfect business sense and would be what I would do if I was the developer/publisher of this game. The Ardennes Offensive scenerios/campaigns are at present set to ship with this game so in fact it will be like getting two games for the price of one.

Stalingrad

Post by SwampYankee68 »

I agree that a good Stalingrad scenario is desirable. I played through the East Front II Stalingrad scenario, PBEM. It seemed that it was heavilly weighted for the Germans. The club ladder I was in at the time, (The Blitz) showed that most of the reported games had major German victories. I think this was due to the USSR units being fixed and no reinforcements coming accross the Volga. A better balanced Stalingrad would be great.

Russia!

Post by BrubakerII »

SY I think by STalingrad Reiryc may have meant the encirclement battle itself no necessarily the city fighting perse but I could be wrong.

The TAO series is by default a Regimental/Divisional game with each Division usually represented by 3 or 4 'counters'. Because of this I think it is best used for slightly larger manoevre based battles as opposed to the set piece intricate ones. Just an opinion.

I agree entirely with Reiryc's choice of battles for several reason:

1) Because TAO3 is based in Russia already the map tiles and units are largely in place already,

2) It is a natural extension of the existing game, and

3) SSG already have a proven record of Russian Front games over the years and therefore much of the research has been done already and needs only be input into the game.

OK, well, with that correction in mind, The battle of encirclement and the attempts at breakout and to relieve would still make great scenarios.
