MAPS!!!!! MAPS!!!

Post by dgk196 »

Sometime ago, I found a source for printed maps of 'Russia'. They were topographic and the set was made up of a survey, which apparently was completed in early summer of 1941!

Do I have anybody's attention yet? Good!

The scales where either 1:200,000 (perfect for CS)and 1:100,000 (PzC). But the price was high.

Now the good news. Go to this website, Mapstor.com, you will find downloads of said same maps, I believe. I just downloaded the 'Kursk','Belgorod' and 'Volgorod' sets, a total of 209 maps. They are in color and in Russian, so get out your dictionaries. The total cost? $12.00 U.S. dollars, thats right twelve dollars!

They also have a 'Ukraine' set for $35.00. It includes 135 1:200,000 scale maps, 558 1:100,000 scale maps and 35 1:50,000 scale maps.

Hallo dgk196
This soviet maps are produced in the 70ths and 80ths - modern maps. For the WWII you need the russian maps 1:100000 from the 30ths. The urban and forest situation and the infrastructur are very different in the last 60 years. To use this maps for JTCS (EF) you play in not correct historian terrain. It is than an phantasie-scenario. Many of the original EF scenarios have the same problem !!!

Im sure they will be fine, lets face it theres not been many major changes to the general infastructure of the Ex Soviet Union or to its topographical features(unless somone dropped an atom bomb, and didnt tell anyone)since the War,its not like the Soviet Union/Russia has major earthquakes and Tsunamis to modify the Geography is it?[:D][:D][:D]

Also when was the last mention of Disney to build DisneyCommune in the urals or have the Spinsky Brothers Film Company build a theme Park in downtown Petropavlovsk????

Sorry guys, I have to remember to be more specific. I read on their original, buy our paper maps site, that these where the basis for the maps you see now. Is it correct? For comparison, check out google earth. I use it to help orient myself on the topographical maps but one thing stands out on both, the post WWII features really stand out. But some of the more obvious features are easy to eliminate. Such as the four-lane highways, the 'bypass' and other more modern features, generally not found in most of Europe, Germany not withstanding of course.

But be that as it may, this is one the best small scale map sources that I have found yet. But I'm always looking for more! By the way if you have gone to the sight or downloaded the maps, have you seen any explanation of the height differential for the topography? Just what sort of change in elevation per 'line' are we talking about?

dgk some guys like Huib actually go and walk the old battlefields and research until there's nothing left to research, and of course theres nothing wrong with that kind of scenario. I've played a good number of Huibs scenarios and they are great. But if you like making game maps and scenarios those maps work great.

I don't have a problem with you guys pointing out my mistakes. I look at it as keeping me from making a worse error later, because I was not corrected now.

Off subject, slightly! Speaking of errors, thank you for your feedback 'Dumnorix', I'll be taking everyones input into consideration when working with these maps. By the way, did you just make an 'error'? [:)]

"The urban and forest situation and the infrastructur are very different in the last 60 years." Seams very 'english' language oriented to me, the typo not withstanding! [;)] See what I mean guys?

Then makes times your amateur scenarios with modern maps. I prefer geographically and historically correct work.

Dann macht mal eure Amateurszenarien mit modernen Karten. Ich jedenfalls bevorzuge geographisch und historisch korrekte Arbeit.

The problem with 1920's or 1930's maps often is that they're also based on older geographic research often dating as far back as the 1890's only with some additions made later. So these aren't perfect either. So it is questionable which map would be the closest representation to the actual situation of the 1940's: the 1930's map or the 1970's.
