OS X: Guide to installation

Post by OnTheContrary »

After reading of someone else's good experience of running the game in Linux under Wine I went ahead and bought it for my mac. Here's a dead simple guide to installing and running the game on OS X. You'll end up with a .app file that you can place in your Applications directory, making it possible to treat it just like a native application.

Tested with Mavericks, but I reckon this should work just fine on all OS X versions currently supported by Wineskin.

1. Download Wineskin (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php).
2. Start Wineskin.
3. Click the '+' sign under the 'Installed Engines' section - we're going to install a Wine version here.
4. Choose the latest version available and click 'Download and Install'. If that gives you problems later on for some reason or another, try an older one. FYI, I am running WS9Wine1.7.12.
5. Once that is done Wine will probably trigger an optional download of a Mono library (open source .NET) which will probably fail. Just ignore it and let it finish.
6. You now have a .app wrapper file in your /<username>/Applications/Wineskin directory! Double click it.
7. Click 'Set Screen Options'. Do the following on the screen that pops up:
a. 'Override Wine control of Screen Settings?' -> Override.
b. In the 'Override Settings' half of the screen, pick 'Fullscreen'.
c. Click 'Done'.
(optional) Click 'Advanced'.
(optional) Under the 'Options' tab, uncheck 'Map User Mac OS X folders in wrapper.'. Close the options.
8. Click 'Install Software'.
9. Select the .exe installation file.
10. Install the game, just like on Windows.
11. After the installation has finished you can run the game by double-clicking the .app wrapper file that you created in step 6.
12. Enjoy the game.

Thanks for this! What do you do if we need to apply an upgrade like the lastest 1.02 beta?

I assume the patch is just another .exe file. If it's zipped, unzip it somewhere first.

Here's what I reckon you should do (not tested, mind you - so give it a try and tell me how it went):

1. Navigate to the location of the .app wrapper in Finder.
2. Right-click the .app file, select 'Show Package Contents'.
3. Double-click the 'Wineskin' file.
4. Select 'Install Software', then 'Choose Setup Executable'.
5. Navigate to the location of the patch and select it. This should then trigger the installation.
6. Once you're done you should be able to run the game just like before.

That's good news - you're welcome.

Erik, you might want to consider sticking this - with the disclaimer that this is an unofficial, unsupported way of installing and playing the game. Though this should be obvious since this is a Windows game and it says so on the store page.
