"Combat Mission"???

Post by sven6345789 »

I always wondered. Are the Panzer Command in any way related to the Combat mission series? it does look alike. Although it seems to hve several improvements like a real long-time campign mode

Not related, but certainly Combat Mission was a major inspiration for us, along with many other tactical wargames (especially Steel Panthers and ASL) both on the computer and on the tabletop. Panzer Command is based on a tabletop miniatures ruleset called "Panzer War" which has been around for a few decades and continues to evolve and improve. While based on Panzer War, there are also many differences in order to make things work well on the computer.

I have not played this game, just the demo, and it was a lot like Battlefront's Combat Mission, except it did not have a TCIP option, and if it had I would have gotten it...but it did not. Granted TCIP is for a very small niche market, but CM's WEGO system lends itself well to TCIP, as both players are active doing their turn.  Not sure, if this is fact, but I heard CM had some of the best unclassified armor penetration algorithms out there at the time.  Anyway, I have thought about buying this game several times, and each time backed away, maybe I'll try it this time.

I may have to buy this game, according to Mad Russian, you can play it TCIP, and I know him from my Combat Mission days, and he is a great scenario designer and CM player.

Your checks in the mail...[&o]

The process is not a pure TCP but a blend of TCP and PBEM. You can play multiple turns and communicate but it's not hooked up through a direct server. You use a sync system called Drop Box. Then you get the best of both worlds. You can play real time and you can get any turns that you didn't do during your real time play later when you get time to play them.

It's great!

Forgive my ignorance here.  Does the new, improved game come already with this facility to use drop box?  What I mean is, as long as I have a drop box (or similar) account, will the game know it and use this feature independant of me, or with as little input as possible?

At the moment, subject to last minute changes, when you start the game you get the configuration screen where you select your video settings. There is now a section at the bottom for two entries. First is your player name. Second is the location on your computer for multiplayer files. There is a browse button. You navigate to either your PBM folder in PCO for conventional PBEM or your Dropbox or other sync folder for live sync games. Then you start the game and it takes care of the rest.
