Combat engineers and pioneer units........

Post by LoneWulf63 »

I understand that there are only a couple games that are available today that use combat engineers or pioneer units as they were and are used in modern tactical situations. However, I have not seen them used in any of the games I have played, with the possible exception of the limited actions those units can employ in the new version of Battlefront Game's newest Combat Mission game, Battle for Normandy. I do think that the designers of Panzer Command: Ostfront, a game that I am quickly becoming addicted to, should think of possibly including the weapons that these units used (Bangalore torpedos and satchel charges) to clear/breach obstacles such as wire or tank obstructions and the destruction of buildings, bunkers, and bridges. Of course, I haven't played any PCO scenarios that use these units so I may be talking out of turn here.

Thanks. Chris.

Chris,

We do have some Pioneer Units that carry (and can use) Satchel charges. And I think we have a few other mine weapons (Panzerwurfmine and Tellermine) that were created, but we didn't assign them to any units. Though there is nothing stopping players from creating their own Pioneer Units with these weapons.

However, we don't have destructable terrain, so using these to clear obstacles will need to wait for the next game in series. So right now these weapons are only effective agaiknst enemy units (and they have very short ranges - so using them is pretty risky to the unit).

Thanks!
Rick

Yes, it is risky (in a game and in real-life) to get that close to a tank with an explosive. As it should be too. Chris.

In the next game (Western Front please), sticky bombs and Molotov cocktails might be something to look into. Am I thinking of a Private Ryan style town battle? Well, yes I am.
