Opinions Wanted:Is SPWAW FUBARED?

I have not been playing much at all lately and I'd just like to know what you regular players think of the state of SPWAW at the moment.

I have played SP or its derivatives since SP-1. Given that I was playing the other people's version till I got a decent PC and didn't want to fight the DOS battle anymore, I came to SPWAW. I find that it's bugs are bearable, the game quite enjoyable and a very good deal for the price. You can't even say that about Microsoft.

Combined with the updated 7.1x OOB's located on The Armor Site or Tankheads SPWAW resources it's one of the better builds, but not perfect. The gaming seems to be at an all time high. But I'll let others speak their minds before you make a decision.

Not looking for perfection, just been reading posts around here and lots of people seem to be having a bunch of problems due to constant OOB and engine revision.

Stuff like old camps and scenerios dont work right, campaign generator messed up,etc.

No more problems then in the past. Tons of PBEM's going on, just read the AAR/DAR sub-forum. As a veteran of SPWAW yourself, try it and form your own opinions. I myself have a hard time going back to SPWW2 and it's mods because of the outdated graphics. Yes SPWAW still has some problems but nothing that makes it unplayable or unenjoyable.

Certainly good enough for me. I only play H2H and only PBEM. A great game. The bugs are bearable. Looking foreward to CL.

Most of the problems folks post about are related to the AI. Since all my battles are PBEM the only bugs I run into are aircraft (spotting bug) and US arty (0.1 delay). We always set 'air sections' to zero anyway, and the arty bug can be overcome by agreeing to limits during pre-battle negotiations. I find SPWAW very playable, and will continue to enjoy it until CL arrives.

Think you hit the nail on the head there. Since we know Matrixgames isn't putting any further effort into perfecting sp:waw we live with it's small quirks. It's a d*mn good game, and a FREE one at that.

I can't wait to grab my copy of CL. :)

Looking at the state of SPWAW today as a finished product, I think it is very good. V7.1 was a great improvement, and what bugs and insects that remain are small and few. Given that it is a free game, it is quite outstanding.

To Matrix: Thanks dudes, for everything.

I even have a copy of Steel Panthers (nothing after the word Panthers version actually on the computer).

The game is fun first and last in all its versions.
Graphics suck in some versions by comparison to others. In some cases the game runs crummy in comparison to others.

But then I go looking through my other non Steel Panthers wargames and notice that I reaaaaaaally think a lot of the non Steel Panthers games are worthless wastes of hard drive space at best in a lot of cases.

Even Steel Panthers's most wretched DOS only, lame graphics version is miles ahead of anything close to it.
And I will even go so far as to say Steel Panthers is superior in gaming fun to any of the wonder child games out there that are still new even.

I will likely still have an interest in playing Steel Panthers aaaaaafter I get Combat Leader. Might like Steel Panthers less than Combat Leader, but it won't suddenly make Steel Panthers crappy either.

Then again, I still think Squad Leader and Panzerblitz are great games even after all these years.

Les,
Panzer blitz is good, yes but I found it to be a better game after I bought Arab Israeli Wars. In the designer's notes for that game there is a conversion factor used to reduce unit speeds to something more realistic in PB and PL. Have you tried that ?

Hey Jim go ya one further, I not only have Panzerblitz Panzerleader and Arab Israeli wars (only modern warfare tank game I ever loved as well).

But I went and got a fresh set of Panzerblitz counters and painstakingly painted over the erroneous numbers and then even more painstakingly painted in the new values.

In addition I have the Paths of Rommel feature from the Avalon Hill General, that quite nicely gave me values for early war vehicles.

By the way people, anyone that wants a set of scans of that feature need only ask me for them.

Hmmm yes I guess I was not exact enough, "Paths of Rommel" assumes you are employing the PanzerLeader game.

Although, with the 3 games, you can pretty well play every aspect of WW2 (even Fall of France thanks to the article).

And with the Arab Israeli Wars game you can use it to make modifications if desired (although a modified board game is not immune to mangled play balance any more than a computer scenario that gets modified).

I have sp3, spww2,spmbt and Spwaw
Spwaw is all I play anymore, It is by far the Best of them all, How ever, I Play the H2H version of SPWAW, due to a few reason, but mostly, the OOBS seem "cleaner"
and armor combat seems better.
If only they had made a modern SPWAW, the world would be perfect heheh...

Alby,

I agree as far as SPWAW being the best SP engine but WW2 can't hold my attention forever.Yes,A modern one would have been nice.

I have all of the PB family + the '40 version of PL. Also I made new '41 units for german and russian and made numerous scenarios for '41-'42. Ahh, memories...
