Strangest AI generated Opponent
While playing a long campaign with Germans Vs Brits, July 43, I got about the strangest opposing force yet from the AI. The battle was set on Sicily. The computer which assigned a delay mission to me as the German Player, picked hordes of British Armored Cars and a couple of British Para Battalions to assault a German Force made up of a Tiger Plt, Panzer Plt, 2 SS Mech Plts, SP Mortar Plt, Maultier Sect, and a Rifle Co in support with some ADA also. Needless to say it was a complete slaughter of the Brits who lost over 70 armored cars. There was not a single tank for the Brit side and their Fire Support was 3" mortars organic to the Para's. They didn't stand a chance.

Sounds like the "picklist" is messed up, or the AI pickk formations in the UK OOB have been rearranged. That's something we are trying to keep to a minimum in the Enhanced SPWAW Mod; we don't know exactly which formation slots are used by the AI and when, so we have tried to not change the basic ones. Altering them is one thing, where we may add or remove subs or specific units, but changing them into something completely different is what we are trying to avoid.

I haven't done anything to the British OOB, its the vanilla version. I have seen the AI pick some strange things in the past but this one is the strangest yet.

Sometimes these things can happen if the Rarity preference is turned on.
I think I once fought forward elements of the dreaded Japanese 5th Knee Mortar Division.

I noticed in vanilla spwaw the early war brits often buy exactly like you described, the Brits according to the oob editor should be buying at least some cruisers and such in years up to 43.
perhaps it is a matter of how many points the AI is given?
We will take another look at the brit AI armor formations for SPWAW Enhanced.
I do recall giving them less Armor cars and a few more tanks, but will double check.

That is strange. I can't say I've seen anything that weird; even the Poles have a few tincans floating around (not much to speak of IMO, my PzKpfw IIcs are slaughtering them like cattle) when I fight them.
Though, in my experience, the Brits do tend towards large AC formations; but I usually see some Matildas which always cause me no end of trouble.

Dragoon, do you know how many the brits had?
I just did some tests, with 2000 points, july 43, brit assualt, the Brit AI got almost all armor cars, some 4.5 howitzers and some mortars.
when I increased their points to 3000, then the tanks appeared for them.
Seems to me this is just the AI using up its points on armor cars and such before it gets to the tanks.
when they have limited purchase points

Hmmm. Check the force listings at the end of the battle to see what they had exactly and what order they were purchased.
Perhaps, like alby suggested, they are first purchasing their AC formations, then whatever, then whatever, ect ect... I haven't been doing this very often, but i've checked with the poles and found that they alternate Infantry and Tanks and Calvary, with small sections (maybe attached to Inf Cos?) of field arty. If the Brits are buying ACs first, then Engineers, then tanks, then you may need to go to Hard setting to get them to have armor and infantry formations.

I don't remember exactly how many AC's the AI bought, but I do remember that the AI bought AC's first about 30 of them, then the Para's, then more AC's. If I remember correctly they also had around 12-15 3" mortars, which I believe were part of the Para Companies. My core force for the campaign was 2600 points so the Brits should have had at least around 4000 for their advance mission vs my delay.
Needless to say I was surprised that the Brits didn't have at least some Grants or Valentines included in the force and also some heavier artillery.
I just posted this because I thought it strange.

It is slightly strange, but i'd like to explore it, just to get a feel for how SPWaW's AI builds its forces in relation to the amount of points they get.
Thus far, it seems they purchase things by company in a certain sequence, with each nation having different priorities. The Poles might have a priority in Infantry, then Light (or non-existant) tanks, then Calvary, then Arty, then the sequence starts anew. After two battles, the forces I've faced have been pretty much the same, save perhaps the overall total may have been higher the second battle since I had more support points.

RE: Strangest AI generated Opponent
That happened to me once, only it was the first battle in Africa. Early 41 I think?
If you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.
RE: Strangest AI generated Opponent
Me too, when i first tried the Italians in 8.4. Man, hordes of British armoured cars charged my lines and just kept on driving [X(]. Never saw one enemy tank (Its not like the AI needed them anyway). I think it occurs in lower point battles as mentioned above.

In a way, yes. I quit before finishing the battle

Anyway this is nothing like the time in SP2 when the Viet Cong, using a brand new and surprising strategy, deployed several infantry companies inside an area of 50 metres. Talk about a Schwerpunkt! SP has come a loooong way
