Walls & Hedges

Post by StephanFH »

I've looked around (even in the manual) and can't seem to find a definitive answer to the following. Does the defensive bonus and/or hull down advantage apply when one occupies the wall hex or when one is one hex behind it?

I'm almost certain that the answer is no.

Ok, the terrain effects document indicates that the stone wall HEX provides Good cover. It also indicates that a mixed hex provides Poor cover and that rain provides Poor cover. If I have an infantry unit in a mixed hex with a stone wall and the scenario specifies rain, what kind of cover does that unit get?
How does that improve if the unit is "in cover"?
Is a tank hull down? Is the tank only hull down if it is "in cover"?
What does wall breached by the tank mean to the cover in the hex? How does wall breached affect the infantry unit in the hex? How does it affect the tank?
Take away the rain, now what are the answers?

Am I the only one with these questions? If not, where are the answers?

If I have an infantry unit in a mixed hex with a stone wall and the scenario specifies rain, what kind of cover does that unit get?

It gets the best of all Terrain types in the hex; in this case, Good.
How does that improve if the unit is "in cover"?

Units in "cover" gain an additional benefit (a negative modifier to any enemy unit firing at them) for this status. The exact amounts and conditions are known only to the programmers.
Is a tank hull down? Is the tank only hull down if it is "in cover"?

"Hull Down" status is not an actual status; it is assumed to apply to any vehicle which has a height advantage over an enemy unit firing at it. Walls also give this "hull down" benefit, if the incoming fire originates from a hex across the Wall hex.
What does wall breached by the tank mean to the cover in the hex?

As far as I know, nothing. A unit "in cover" in a Wall hex that is breached doesn't lose its "cover" status. But it will have a different Base Terrain to figure from (see answer below).
How does wall breached affect the infantry unit in the hex? How does it affect the tank?

When breached, a Wall hex becomes a Rough hex, thereby changing the terrain aspects. Any unit, armoured or infantry, that occupies the new Rough hex gains cover and defensive benefits based on this terrain classification, not the Wall one.
Take away the rain, now what are the answers?

The same. Rain has more effect on Movement than anything, but it may have some effect on the ability of a unit to gain "cover" status. However, since the "cover" determination routines are not known to the public, it's hard to say what any effect might be.
Am I the only one with these questions? If not, where are the answers?

I can't answer if you're the only one with these questions, but the answers are there to be discovered. Much of this knowledge has been gained from extensive playing, testing, and exploring the game concepts.
