Entrenchment

Post by Gary Tatro »

I have heard that it is possible to entrench units during a delay engagment. But it has been my experience that I have never been able to do this. Is there something special that you have to do to be able to entrench your units during an delay engagment? Like save points and if so how many?

Change your stance to defend and within a few turns you'll notice a small burm around you. It's not as good as a deployment entrenchment but it helps from a defensive stand point.

Yeah I new about the defend status and seeking cover. But I had heard that you could actually get the Entrench status in a defend action. Is this not correct?

Well, I thought it was a fluke, but after seeing this post...

I'm playing the World War II Campain as Germany, and during my first mission, in North Africa, a Meeting Engagement, All my infantry that was not in transports started entrenched, strangely enough, I know I didn't hit the Entrench button...

Now..in my second mission...This is even weirder, an assault mission on the Eastern Europe front, I was the assaulter, with the Soviets defending...and my guys were entrenched at the begining O_o.

Again, I didn't hit the E key, so I have no idea what caused this...any thoughts?

Just for Sausage and Grits if you had hit the 'E' button all your troopers would have stopped digging in and read the "Encyclopedia":D :D :D

I started up the Stalingrad campaign and the same thing happens to me...a lot of the units start entrenched after the deployment stage, and I did NOT set them that way...they are the attackers anyway, so...hmmm....

The only explanation I see, is that scenario/campaign designer has set for your side to defend against AI assaulting during the battle editing. In this case, no matter what the intro text or instructions are stating, ALL of your units will get the entrenchement graphic AUTOMATICALLY, around them.

Uhh well.

That's wrong basically, because I'm getting the same thing and It's not using the Stalingrad campain  Though I did notice it when I was doing that one as well.

And it's not the graphic, their status is Entrenched my friend, remember that, and besides, during campains you can deply your own equipment, or during these two you can.

I have often seen where attackers start entrenched in assault/defend generated scenarios. This makes some sense as the attackers could be jumping off from prepared positions.

Am I correct in my belief that those entrenchment "graphics" immediately provide excellent defensive cover for any infantry unit that is in that hex. They are like shell holes or rough terrain, right? And that is why you should be careful about whether you entrench your units.

Yes Larry, it does.

But this was a meeting engagement the first mission, the second one was an assault.

Also, I believe that the unit has to "dig in" into the entrenched hex, meaning it has to stay there for a while, what would normally be considered "in cover" becomes Entrenched if they're on an entrench square.

I think that's why you have to be careful about entrenching.
