0400 Hours

We have been given orders to slow the german advance here today. We are to hold at all costs no matter what comes at us. I figure the germans will thro a lot of armor at us. They have to push us back or stop us in our tracks to take pressure off Tobruk.

I have set B comapny up to guard our northern flank. A company will take the center and the canadians will have the southern flank. We were able to scrounge up 70 mines and they will be laid in a row from north to south about 800 feet in front of our lines. Vis is only 300 feet today due to a major sand storm that started around midnight.

The tank support has been set up with in 100 feet of our front lines so as to be able to respond quickly to the German armor. Hoping that our mines will give us enough warning so that our artty support consisting of 2 batteries of 203 can lay in on them before they reach our lines as we are unable to see where the mines are laid in this sandstorm.

Dont believe our ATGs will be of much use as they are not close enough to the front lines to see the enemy as they approach. My 3 inch mortars and 25 Lb howitzers will have to suppress the enemy as much as possible today. The engineers are to supplement the mine field by laying as fast as they can another belt in front of there companys.

This should be a heck of abattle as we have heard they are mobilizing as much armor in our sector as they can.

The first mines went off about 20 minutes ago. They have not stopped exploding for the last 20 minutes either. Someone is catching hell as they try to rush thru the mine field. As soon as the first mine went off I called Hq for them to open up with the heavy stuff maybe 50 feet the other side of the mine field. Have heard some tanks erupt in flame even tho we are unable to see them.

The germans have seen fit to send everything thay have at B in the north. Nothing has come at A in the center as yet. B has managed to take out at least 7 tanks while losing only 1 so far there selves. Even tho it takes sometime 15 to 20 hits by our gunners to hurt one of the German monsters. Our 3 inch howitzers on the Matildas dont even dent on straight on shots it still stops them long enough for other tanks to move in on there side. I have gotten reports of 5 of our tanks taking on one of theres and really unloading on them with no apparent success.

B is still holding and the reports I get is morale is still high. Our big guns can be heard firing almost non stop so im sure any enemy backed up in front of the mine filed is catching holy hell right now.

We are holding the line well even tho we lost a few of our objective these will be retaken shortly as soon as there is any kind of a break in the fighting.

The battle still rages with no let up on the German armor that has gotten thru our mine field. We have taken out at least 50 tanks so far. they continue to hit B CO. in the north. Actually its the right flank of B that has taken all the heat. We have lost at least 7 tanks so far. More then I had hoped we would lose today.

But B still holds with no indication of retreating so far. Am sending you some recon air photos of the battle area. The red line is my line of mines. You can see from the explosion craters where they have been coming thru the mines so far. The blue shows where B Cos.front line is. I have sent all tanks close to there area to help against the onslaught of German armor. You can also see where they have taken at least three of the objectives and still hold them at the moment. So far we have taken 3 of the objectives back . Actually they held them up to about 10 minutes ago.

All still goes well for our side with very high morale. I believe the german all out onslaught will begin to slow down they cant continue to lose the armor at the rate thay have been doing. Our heavy guns continue to pound the area just the other side of the mine field I believe this has kept the infantry forces down. At least we have not seen too many of the enemy infantry trying to force our lines. There mistake has been not hitting our line in more then one place I believe. We were able to marshall most of our tank force against them in one area.

We have stopped the Germans cold and inflicting heavy losses to them. Thery really wanted to smash us. Our troops did a bang up job of inflicted death and mayhem to the enemy. Its too bad 116 of our brave lads had to make the big sacrifice for us to achieve our goals. They took with them 1260 men also along with them they blew up 84 tanks while we lost 12.

We have put a heavy dent in there resorces today and have shown we can whip these supermen. The losses here today will slow down there efforts here and in Egypt. It has been a great day for the common wealth and the King. " God Save the King" Hip Hip Hooray
