British try delay Italians Libya 9/14/40

1100 Hours

We are to delay the Italian advance in Libya at Halfaya. We are back to full strength and rarin to go. Our Engineers have set up a two row deep minefield in front of us. It will be A CO center B in the south and the Canadians in the the North.

There is a slight sandstorm which will cut down on visability somewhat. Id say you can see at least 750 yards or so. Should give our tank and support gunners lots of time to take out anything they send at us.

The Italians began there advance right at 1100 hours right in some of the hottest time of the day. Goin to be a schorcher today will need pleny of water sent to the front lines.

Our men are ready and set to take on the enemy and to deal as much damage as well as slowing down there advance. Should be a good fight. The Italians are not the push over that a lot of people have said. They will fight and fight dam hard when pushed. Its just they dont have the command structure we have nor the equipment we are blessed with.

This turned out to be a very short fight. The italians have left the battle field. They could not break our defenses and had lost way too many men and equipment. We took out 72 afvs 10 trucks and 7 artty along with 975 men. Our losses were very slight. All our losses came from artty being dropped on us constantly. Our losses were 21 men nothing else.

Our big guns really tore the heck out of them. Catching them where they were marshalling and blasting hugh holes in there ranks. There armor had no chance against our superior fire power and very accurate shooting all our gunners had today. We were taking out there tanks at or near 800 yards all day long.

Orders have already been issued to us and we are to move as soon as we can. We are to travel all the way across Libya to maybe 75 miles east of Tobruk to Bardia on the coast road just before Eygpt. By December we are to be in defensive positions to stop the Italians once again from pushing on Tobruk. This will give us almost 2 months to get defenses dug and to really establish our selves before the Italians can begin there push.

Some of the men will be able to go home for a few days and visit there family. Maybe I will be able to get the time to go home to Burntwood and visit my folks. Sure do miss talking to my old man and eating the old ladys food. She is one grand cook thats for bloody well sure. Well got to get my kit together we will be moving out soon.
