Commanders

Im playing the Iwo Jima scenario and i cant figure out how to assign a commander to a unit that is about to land. there is only one commander that i can assign to a unit that has already landed. can someone give a more detailed explain about what i should do, if it is possible.

It's not possible to assign a commander before the unit is on land.

What happens to commander of a naval unit that is destroyed on sea? Will he return to pool or is he lost?

My experience with land and sea is MOST of the time they are returned to the pool.

Once in awhile the get killed.
