Well, I would never expect the Japanese to win against a human player. The task set them by high command is a difficult one.

Any reasonable defense, which included :

+ garrisoning, and defending supply points
+ actually landing troops from transports in a timely manner
+ refusing to allow the navy to be defeated in detail
+ contesting the liberal Japanese air allotment

would have made the task difficult, and I think too difficult.

Has anyone ever seen a human-human game won by the Japanese?

Stumbled on this graphic recently.
Which may put the game's speed in which the Japanese Army travel across Australia into question.
As good a player as Chuck is, 15 months!!!

I am playing a game of "Road to Victory" and have taken Moscow and Leningrad by October 1940, so fifteen months for Australia is about right I think. [;)]

Chuck, so having extensively played TOW, SOP and (AGW), how has RtV held up?

RtV was my favorite, and still is. It is a game that can be played in a single day, or two, or three, but it does go fast. This allows you to try different strategies, and for me this is the key. It is certainly not a simulation like (AGW), which I do not own actually. Gary Gardner does, and he is quite fond of it. I do not mind that level of operational detail, but RtV, to the degree it is a simulation at all, is more strategic. I love the sweep the game has, and this reflects my interests. I will read a book on the European Theater of Operations, and get a hankering to try some alternative, and RtV is just the tool. The simplicity of the game gets you where you want to be quickly.

ToW and SoP are very popular, and incorporate changes others desire, but I did not. I was not in favor of random weather even! To me the changes were akin to modifying Chess to make the bishop have more religious functionality, or differentiating the pawns by "unit type". I feel that the game, "Road to Victory" was, and is, a classic, and ToW/SoP are parallel games, but not a replacement.

That beiing said, ToW/SoP are fun games, but with a different scale, and feel. I like them all, but RtV holds my heart. Loved it from the first minute.

Apologies for getting you mixed up with GG.
I've read your AAR's so often you are almost indistinguishable. [:)]
Nice to get your opinion of RtV. Makes me want to go back and fire it up again... I always thought it was abandoned rather quickly.
thanks.

I see from your signature that you have HCE. For many, many years that was the only computer wargame I played. Of course I started with the DOS versions, but I never went to the H2 and H3 variants. Did you buy the 'ultimate' edition?

Chuck

PS: Being with Gary is good company indeed.

Yup. Although according to the rusted on Harpooner's; buying into the latest incarnation of this franchise (for me again), has been controversial.
I also had this game many moons ago, back when this was about the only game my 286 would run, and thought the recent purchase timely; and I actually like the fact that it hasn't visually changed all that much. I'm not even sure if I'll play the commander's edition. Harpoon feels and plays like Battles from the Bulge on Water, or (going back earlier to say) Tacops. Sometimes I almost run it like a screensaver in the background. I get strange looks from my work colleagues when my computer starts screaming out "VAMPIRE VAMPIRE" [:)]
