unit icons not appearing on Windows 8

I am using Time of Fury 1.04 on a Windows 8 Professional system. The game seems to run OK but the main screen will not show any icons, friendly or unfriendly. When I "deploy" units, a silver loop appears on the screen where I click to deploy the unit, but not icon appears. How do I get ToF to display friendly and enemy icons during a game.

Help. All the units are invisible. they disappeared after a save, and are gone from new games as well. Pressing the spacebar doesn't help, nor does changing from icons to sprites etc.What's the path to icons, or are they generated on the fly?

Never mind - I found the setting.ini advice.
