Bottle Bombs
A new weapon to be added to AE:
From StrategyPage.com, CIC Issue #210 -
"Reportedly, on August 4, 1943, during a radar-guided predawn air raid against Japanese installations on Kiska, in the Aleutians, a Navy PBY not only dropped several bombs, but also 92 empty beer bottles, for the "disconcerting whistling effect" which they produced."

RE: Bottle Bombs
Must have a pretty demoralising effect on Japanese troops, knowing that the other side has beer, as they almost starve to death.

Can you really demoralize a Japanese when you let him know that you have BEER? You can surely demoralize a German that way but how much beer is consumed in Japan? [:)]

Will they be in AE?

RE: Bottle Bombs
These could only work in 3 possible ways:
1) Psychological effect....IE the scare factor.
2) Direct hit with the bottle landing on someone's head.
3) Shrapnel damage from broken glass.
Of these #1 would be the most effective as you have troops hearing the sounds of falling bombs with no explosions. This leads them to believe there is unexploded ordinance lying about.
If modeled in AE, these would have to be weaposn with no more tha 1 point of soft target damage, and even that might be too great for the effectiveness in reality.

A lot. The Japanese love beer. Although not as big, per capita, than China, IIRC Japan rates pretty high. I think Kiran is the major brewery there.

Actually -all bombs- have an "anti-soft" rating of 0. It's thier "effect rating" that is (supposed to be), the number of pounds of TNT (a 500# GP bomb has an effect rating of 500).
You'd have an effect rating of 0 (since no TNT, and would therefore do nothing in-game). I suppose you could have a "penetration rating". Penetration rating is (supposed to be) the number of mili-meters of steel/armor that can be pentrated.
I don't know how many mms of armor a glass bottle woud/could penetrate. But it would certainly have a bit of kinetic engergy if you dropped the thing from 12,000'. I would think even an empty glass bottle could punch thru 1mm of steel if you dropped it from 12k (obviously it would shatter as well).
(and yes, it would matter if the bottles were filled with beer etc).
Sorry. I'm waxing a bit nerdy.

I've been bombed a few times while drinking German beer out of a bottle.

Not to mention Japanese beer....In fact I've been bombed mixing beers...however they are mostly of the English and Irish variety.

My father was in the USAAF in the Aleutian Islands during the war. He was an engine mechanic and he once told me his other duty was to go to the Navy base and bring back their weekly ration of beer. I forget the amount involved but it was substantial (1 case per man per week?). Perhaps one of the bottles was his donation to the war effort.

RE: Bottle Bombs
It is too bad that the only Japanese beer I have come across, in a small New York supermarket when I grew tried of Budwiser, came in cans. The effect of a empty can must be much less than that of a bottle. Since dropping full cans is certainly not an option, this leaves Japan without ordnance for a return strike[:D]

edit: the beer was called "SAPPORO", it is kind of hard to read on the photo
it may matter to your considerations that the strength of the can it self was far superior to that of a normal Budwiser can

RE: Bottle Bombs
Go to most any WW2 site occupied by the Japanese...Kirin beer bottles (with the IJA star on the bottom) are usually the most prominent find at this late date. Got a collection of them, in all different colors of glass. As a comparison, I don't recall ever finding a WW2 US beer can/bottle...just lots and lots of Coke bottles.

Sapporo...good.
Asahi Super Dry...AWESOME. Highly recommend it. Goes great with Sushi. It comes in a bottle.

Yes. The well-known Tsingtao brewery in China was operated under the brand name 'Rising Sun Beer' during the Japanese occupation.
