CV battle - discussion

Post by Speedysteve »

Hi all,

Now this is interesting and the first time (that I can remember) this has happened to me!

I'm playing PBEM against my Father. It's his first game and i'm Japanese kicking his arse (16.8K VP to his 3.5K by march 1942).

I spotted his CV's at Midway so I moved KB to intercept.

Setting:

KB has virtually no losses since war's start. All fueled, ready to go. No damage. Good leaders. Moved to within 240 miles of Midway and was not spotted.

CAP set to 50%.

DB/TB set to Naval attack maximum range.

Results:

Day Air attack on TF at 96,64

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 67

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 61
SBD Dauntless x 43

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 20 destroyed, 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 44 destroyed

Not 1 of my planes attacked the enemy CV's despite having 8 x TF spotted at Midway by FP's. Weather was clear. Anyone care to give their thoughts as to why none of my planes attacked. A war changing battle. Must admit I am not happy that all of my planes decided to sit on deck with pilots having a **** but there goes my gloating over my Father in this war..........

Screenshot shos the worst damage. Kaga is also wrecked 39/7/37.........Hiryu 24/31/6

I don't have anything useful to contribute, but I think it's funny your dad's wrecking the KB in his first game ever, against an experienced PBEM player too. Blame it on the game, sure, but it's still funny. I wonder what your dad has to say about this.

Speedy,

I've never had that happen with carriers, but several times I've had all of my CAP just sit on their airfield while several hundred Allied 4E bombers came and plastered the airfield.  Last time was a few weeks ago at Rabaul.  I lost 389 planes on the ground. [:@]  I don't think I'll ever recover from that one.  Saburo Sakai died on the ground, presumedly playing the Japanese version of Pinochle.

Oh yeah, it was clear weather too.  Dopes.....

It's ironic I must say......i'm visiting my Father in Spain in a months time. I will have to bring a suitable present and expect constant p*ss taking from him

Does anyone have any constructive thoughts as to WHY KB planes did not attack the American CV's?

it might be that the hex your carriers were in had rainy weather which can sometimes cause a carrier TF to not launch against a target even if there's no cloud symbol. Its a rare occurance but it sometimes happens. Did your carriers react to another hex at all?

Did you have your DB and TB units set for a very short reaction range?  Or did you have them tasked to Port/Airfield attack and not Naval Strike?  If you had set either one of those, they would have been patiently (and obediently) sitting on deck while the Dauntlesses started their fatal dives...

They reacted 60 miles NE.

Negative John. I'm very careful on this. ALL DB/TB were set to Naval Attack (Val - 15K. Kate 5K) Both to range 5.

Brilliant.

In Japanese tradition there are 4 x BB going into Midway overnight also hoping to draw some airpower away tomorrow as attempt to get my CVs out of dodge so I can wipe out every officer that is still alive on those ships.

Unimpressed but such is life.

How many CV's do you think you can escape with?  From the screenshot it looks like you're going to lose at least 1 or 2 if the DC parties can't get those fires under control.  I managed to run down a CV TF with a surface TF led by North Carolina after slowing down three of their carriers from airstrikes.  The "Showboat" now has a CV trophy (think it was Shokaku) attached to her bridge.  At least you won't have that problem if this is early 1942.

Check the naval search level. I had a similar problem once....all DB/TB were set to naval attack, but somehow, the naval search level was set to 100%.

Negative all were on 0% search since I had 35 x FP's on Naval search 100% range of 2-6.

Are the planes in the KB targetted to a particular hex or base ?

Like you may be on escort but only to PH

Hard to explain without seeing the turn or your planning the turn before. If you saved your old game files, send it to someone you trust and have them look it over. Sometimes a fresh eye will spot a mistake.

By the way, If your dad does not hunt you down like the wounded dog you are and sink the rest of your carriers, I will not have any respect for him. This should  not be like the old days when he would let you win at checkers..[:D]
