I was really hoping that Matrix would smart enough to just upgrade the PW graphics and interface, fix the bugs, add some small features and it looks like they did !!

Great Barrier Reef

Post by Toro »

Heya Marc,

The new screenshots look great. I'm assuming the "map" isn't complete yet, but did notice the Australian coast did not display the Reef. Is that coming, or phased out due to scale?

Just wondering.

We are still working on the map and will be coming out with more screenshots as we can. This was just to show you a little bit of the scale and look of the game.

Wow it is going to be huge. I like the shot that shows base info for Pearl on 12/7/41.

Suggestion for Map

Post by Diealtekoenig »

I understand why you are using the projection you are using, but it is a little confusing.

I would suggest marking the Equator at least and perhaps some lines of Latitude and Longtude (?Every 20 degrees?) to give a better feel for just which direction Samoa lies from Tarawa etc.

What an impossible job to take half a globe, flatten it out and squeeze it into a hexagon grid with out causing and two important objectives to become farther apart or closer together.
The map is looking great Iain, can not wait until it is completed. So we can start to whine about it. Thank You for the early screen shots.

and believe me, it's not a pretty sight!!! Looks like PacWar on overdrive with a very tall gear ratio! When can we have the keys, please? I promise to be good and not speed, really.

Map Questions

Post by IChristie »

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback on the map. As mentioned above the map is still in alpha stage at this point. The main work still required includes:
- Reefs (including the Great Barrier Reef)
- Completing the addition of sea and land mass names throughout the map
- Miscellaneous adjustments to land masses (to make them line up with hexes, remove unwanted land bridges ;) - thanks Rowlf - etc.)
- Addition of more distinct shallow water markings
- Tweaking some of the graphics and textures

As for the projection - the actual selection of the of the projection predates my involvement in the project. As I understand it, the projection was chosen to be an "equal area" projection so that every hex is more or less equal in area. It does take a little getting used to but as noted it's a tough job to intuitively represent more than half the globe on a flat map.

You should note that, in the game you will never be looking at an area larger than 1024x768 (i.e. the resolution of the screenshots) so the odd arrangement of the larger landmasses really isn't noticeable in game play.

Please, if you have any other comments, questions, queries, complaints or suggestions on what you see, post them now. It's always easier to fix them early on.

One comment,

In the plane icons, please make them all the same, either top view or side view, please don't scatter the views around.

They look nice and detailed.

Where was that pearl harbour screen display, I didn't see one.
Still playing PacWar (but no so much anymore)...

Sorry, my friend, I have to disagree. Differentiating among the various plane types is already very problematical in UV and will be more so in WITP. There just isn't enough detail in those pixel boxes to be much more precise than the designers have been. I have no problem, for example, with the profile view for torpedo planes and dive bombers as opposed to the overhead view of light (non-torpedo) and heavy bombers. I do hope that the effort is being made to present the differences among types in as recognizable a way as possible (I occasionally have to do a double take in UV to tell a recon plane from a level bomber, but the text displays accompanying each icon box tell all).

------------------------------

I will now proceed to entangle the entire area
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.

Please learn to spell 'Philippines'. Your map shown on http://www.matrixgames.com/Games/WarInT ... ot0001.jpg has it as 'Phillipines'...wrong.
