Here is the "undoctored" photograph. The plane is an F2A from VMF-211.

Following loss of much of the squadron at Wake, VMF-211 was re-equipped with F2As and eventually sent to Palmyra for air defense. This photograph was taken off Palmyra in July, 1942 and is probably from the transfer of VMF-211.

Under what circumstances did that plane crash, if you know? I was under the impression that USMC units were not carrier qualified until late 44.

Most likely the squadron was transported there on the Long Island. Maybe that particular aircraft had tried to return to ship because of some emergency...

Clearly the pilot wasn't qualified. He obviously tried landing in the X-wing configuration, clearly that is not SOP. [:-]

By the looks of the prop, I would guess the landing gear collapsed. Wonder what else went wrong. Either way, this qualifies as a bad day at work.

Yep. I still remember the footage of an F6F landing on a carrier, and the fuselage snapping in half right behind the cockpit... Now that's a bad day!

I've recently begun "collecting" smilies from various boards and I have a couple of smilie sites bookmarked.  They're really not hard to find with Google/Yahoo/Ask/Random Search Engine.
