Nothing to apologise for. Anything which prevents errors in the mod is welcome... I've fixed the ship classes as well as a Zero range issue Sid alerted me to.

With that the mod is locked down and I am beginning to replot my turn 1 orders. Thanks.

I assume you're aware that the Type 1 Kaiten had a 3300lb warhead and an approximate 7000-yard range?

Also, how did you get the Japanese PT's to appear on the reinforcement track?

Terminus,

Yes. I went through the weapons systems at Nihon Kaigun when I was doing my final device check... I caught that error and also added in the 18inch Type 91 Mod 7 Strong from January 44. Basically it carries 926lbs of explosive vs 529 and gives the Japanese twin-engined naval bombers significantly more punch.  The best way I could mod it in was to just give it to Japanese planes which entered service from October 43 in replacement of the older Type 91s.

That means that the G7M, P1Y1 Frances and Peggy represent really major improvements over the G4M2 which enters service in September 43.

Keep the spots coming though. Any new mod is bound to have errors and I'm sure this is no different. Hell, I found out that no airgroups were eligible to upgrade to the Ki-100 ( a carry-over from RHS EOS) just yesterday. Fixed it.

Well they don't appear on the reinforcement track for some reason but based on my testing when the appropriate date is reached they just appear in port. It is very strange and obviously something hard-coded and I amn't 100% certain it will work but in my testing ( when I artificially set the date to sometime in 1944) it works.

The database is full of hard-coded assignations to slots and weapons types so it may be that there is some special code for Japanese PTs whereby they don't have to have HI spent to build them and just appear at the appropriate time.

Sounds more like something that happened because there's NO special code... The US PT "production" system isn't implemented for Japan.

No, I couldn't make it work a la US PT spawning... I ended up adding them as just 400 more ships which had to be produced. Even still they don't show up in the shipbuilding screen but do appear at the correct time. All quite strange and illogical.

Heh, a "rational" Japan just wouldn't attack the US, but continue grabbing colonies from China and the Europeans...  Or just blackmail the Dutch into sending rubber and oil.

What if you start with Japan at war with China, and striking south vs the CW and Dutch (as they did vs Thailand and Vietnam earlier)  It is then up to the Allied player to decide if (or rather when) the US intervenes.

Surprise and deep invasions off, as the Dutch and CW are reasonably aware what is coming, just unable to do anything about it.

Might have to let Japan attack US if they have casus belli (e.g. US garrisoning of CW or Dutch bases)

PS. though Yamamoto was anti-kamikaze, and the programme only started after his death?  Or is that an urban legend?  Certainly, can't see him pushing for dedicated kamikaze aircraft...

Well okonumiyaki, players can house rule whatever they want. ALL nations begin this game activated. That means that if players want to show a Japan vs China and USSR and only later vs the rest of a world game then they can. If players want to put together what you have outlined there then they can also. My view of game/mod design is that it is about giving the player all sorts of interesting options and then letting them combine those options in a way that is acceptable to them and their opponent.

E.g. There are several planes in the Japanese arsenal which are particularly suited for particular strategies which VERY few players seem to undertake. So I don't expect most players to use these planes in these different roles. However the option is there if the player wants it. I guess I should restate the aims of Empires Ablaze again.

It is RHS EOS:
+ conversions of all Yamato class BBs to Shinano class CVs ( with additional deck armour and AAA) ( 1 finishes in late 42, 1 in late 43 and the other early 45)
+ the building of a CAAA class ( again with additional deck armour) - they arrive in the first year
+ a CV escort DD/CLAA class - again these arrive in the first year.
+ an additional 6 raiding CVLs.
+ 400 Tokko MTBs in 1944.
+ conversion of transport to combat subs.
+ myriad aircraft changes
- Japan gets a 4-engined bomber with 3 variants ( iron bomb, torpedo and PGM)
- a wide variety of twin-engined fighter-bombers.
+ 4 new infantry divisions, 3 tank divisions ( armed with the usual light tanks) and a parachute division throughout the war.

In return for this the Allies get:
- 4 additional Essex class and two more CVE(R)s for Corsairs
- Royal Navy CVs and CVLS 12 to 18 months earlier as well as an extra RN CVL
- 7 or 8 BBs and 1 BC, 12 additional CLs and 12 additional RN DDs (Overall I think the Allies end up with 48 BBs and BCs).
- P-51s in September 42 ( a year earlier than stock or RHS)
- Corsairs on CVs from January 43 ( again about a year earlier)
- Much increased replacement rates for four-engined bombers and torpedo bombers over RHS and CHS - in addition the arrival times of several torpedo-bomber types have been moved up in response to the Yamato class.
- An additional nuke per month come July 45.
- 3 Infantry divisions, 1 tank division and 1 parachute division.

In addition the economic aspect has been completely modded from RHS EOS.
- supply sinks have been removed entirely.
- almost all off-map supply has been removed and replaced by on-map resources.
- loads of 0/0 repair shipyards have been placed in ports of size 4 or greater and 0/0 HI, armaments, vehicle etc factories have been dotted all over the map to give Japan the option of decentralising its production and taking some of the burden off its transport ships ( if the Heavy Industry is co-located with the oil and resources then you don't need to ship those oil and resources home - freeing up a lot of shipping capacity).

So, quite extensive changes BUT - and this is the key - there are almost no changes to the START of the game. IOW you aren't locked in to most of my changes if you don't want to use them. They are optional. So what changes are present from the start.
1. Supply sinks, removal of most off-map supply.
2. 3 x Me-264 do exist in a specialised operational testing unit. NO other changes have been made from RHS EOS' starting position. All planes begin the game in the same bases and with the same HQ assignments as they have in RHS EOS. I spend about 1/2 of my entire first turn PP buying my air units out for my attack on the Phillipines. If you want to hit PH instead well then you suddenly have a load of PP which you can put to other uses. Again, it isn't locked in, it is almost all optional.
3. Only 1 x Nemo class CAAA and 1 x Yamato exist at game start ( in my game with Andy I've agreed to keep it in port unti 16th December as that is when the Yamato was historically launched. However in reality if it had been built as a CV instead of a BB it would probably have entered service before 6th December 41 and so for the mod's purposes it is available. Again, this can be house-ruled.

So, really, apart from 3 planes and 2 ships the initial disposition of forces remains the exact same as in RHS. Empires Ablaze is, to my mind, all about options ( particularly in 43, 44 and 45) for both sides.

Anyways, with the last few changes made last night the plotting has really begun. If anyone wants the scenario files ( minus explanatory notes since i haven't gotten round to them yet) just PM me with an email address and I'll send them out to you in a rar file - it is about 550Kb.

about Claa
with 15 durability it is smaller than atlanta and carries more guns and other equipment
ship is overloaded
as for CVA - too much AAA to fast - you gave them everything at once - in 45 it would be reasonable but in 41 25% of that would be much more in place

Sneer,

There's more to durability than just size. It also speaks to compartmentalisation etc. These ships are designed to max out AAA at the expense of almost everything else and, IMO, they manage to do this. They skimp on armour having only 10mm and watertighting etc in order to more efficiently place and feed the guns. Once hit, they die. Typical 1941 Japanese design which tries to over-specialise in one mission at the expense of others.

As to the Atlanta. Well the Atlanta carrier 189mm of armour ( adding up belt, deck and tower armour) - thus 19 times more than the Samurai class CLAA. It has 22 weapons mounts vs 19 weapons mounts on the Samurai....  So you get fewer weapons mounts and you get no armour in the Samurai. Of course the Samurai is probably a bit smaller and certainly not as internally well-divided.

I'm no ship designer but it seems reasonable to me to have a trade-off in a smaller ship between armour ( loses almost all of it) and weapons ( gains additional weaponry for its size but still doesn't approach the capability of the US CLs).

As to it being "too much"... Well it is pretty much only equal to some of the CLAAs the British and Americans start off with and it makes some massive trade-offs in order to be in production so quickly - almost complete lack of protection meaning it is almost useless in a surface action. I don't think it is too unreasonable to give the Japanese something which has the same roughly the same raw AAA as US CLAAs, carries fewer weapons mounts and has no armour. After all the US gets lots of them and who is to say that a different Japanese naval staff mightn't have decided specialised CV AAA escorts would be a good idea?

As to the CVA - I actually toned that down significantly based on feedback from Andy and now it starts off with about 60% of the AAA it originally had and increased to have a bit more AAA via two upgrades - in in 43, the other in 44.

Never been called 'astute' before here [:D].. don't tell anyone.

Re- Jap nuke .. LOL .. i had a sneaking suspicion you would have looked into the possibility beforehand so wasn;t a totally kookey response.

also the 'resource bomber' ( as i'll refer to it) .. Just pointing out the most obvious use for it. wonder how old rear area fighters could cope with it ?.. P39's could have a long shelf life vs this puppy. Tempered by lack of recon too, as that seriously hampers 'major' hits to strategic assets. Seems like a fun addition imo.
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Rob,

Yeah even obsolete fighters will be a good counter for it. So while the Allies will be forced to spread themselves out a bit more to protect more bases they will still be able to concentrate their first-line fighters at the front while their obsolescent models cover the rear areas.

Well after fixing a few errors in the database and some airplane upgrade paths we have now restarted. I'm keeping things pretty much the same in this game with the exception that I'm landing my forces in the Phillipines a little closer to Manilla than in the previous game. My intention is to threaten getting troops into the Manilla hex ASAP such that AndyMac has a choice of either:

a) pulling everything back into Manilla without contesting Clarke Field or
b) contesting Clarke while I have troops in the same hex as Manilla whereupon his troops will not retreat into Manilla but, instead, into the Bataan Peninsula ( where I will leave them as live bomber training targets)

So, he really has an unenviable choice. Either he gives up almost all of the Phillipines except Manilla immediately or he fights it out north of Manilla at the cost of ensuring its speedy fall once I take Clarke. As an additional part of my maskirovka I have ordered my parachutists to capture the three bases in the Phillipines at which my forces will come ashore. This will rob AndyMac of the information one normally gets when ground forces assault and capture a base and the lack of information will, hopefully, cause him to make poor decisions.

Elsewhere I simply replaced the CVAs south-east of Singapore with my CVLs and CVEs... These could put approximately 100 torpedo-bombers into the air and were ordered to destroy the airfield at Singapore. Unfortunately for me they did not fly so Singapore was only attak by slightly over 100 Sallys ( I never trust to a single airstrike component if I have the option). OTOH this just led to the remaining planes impaling themselves on my CAP so what I lost in terms of destroying them on the ground I made up in terms of killing them and their pilots in the air ( something which is, in many ways, preferable to just destroying the airframes alone).

I also seem to have gotten extremely lucky in terms of die rolls since it appears the Me-109 has entered prodution already a full month ahead of schedule. This will allow me to bolster the forces defending Kwantung against Soviet aerial predations... I view this as essential as the most obvious way to train up the Soviet aerial forces is simply to engage in limited attacks with them and trust to actual combat to give them the experience they need ( new Soviet pilots enter with less than 50 Exp and that's just not sufficient to form an effective air force... they need the leavening which exposure to combat gives. Make that exposure too costly and when war with the Soviets does come I will gain mastery of the air more quickly and more completely than would otherwise be the case... an important consideration and one worth a steady, small monthly loss in the air over my bases.).

So, onto the war...

Well, as you can see, American forces initiated attacks against unescorted Japanese merchant vessels and submarines in international waters. Fortunately Imperial Japanese Navy vessels at sea were in position to retaliate and have diverted to cover the retaliatory invasions designed to rob these pirates of their bases. This Imperialist aggression will not go unpunished.

My Sallys did a good job. In return for 1 of their number they managed to destroy 38 enemy planes on the ground including a massive number of the enemy fighters and prevented Singapore airfield from flying offensive missions for the day. This caused those British and Dutch strikes which did fly to be poorly escorted and fall easy prey to my patrolling fighters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila/Cavite [PH] , at 43,52

A maximum strength strike was sent against Manilla and Clarke Field. Freeing up all of those airplanes from other areas cost me a gigantic portion of my starting PPs but I believe it was more than worth it as they managed to greatly reduce the naval threat facing my invasion forces. Fully 706 bombers were involved in the attacks on the Phillipines in the first day and the results were commensurate with the effort expended. It should be borne in mind that while the number of hits seems impressive most of these planes have swapped out the few 250 Kg bombs in favour for a larger number of 100 Kg or even 50 Kg bombs so each hit does far less damage than would be expected in stock. These army bombers are now, however, more effective in their primary ground attack mission. As the game goes on you will see these army bombers being used against enemy shipping only very rarely as they are simply not suited to the task. Turn 1 is an obvious exception.

Manilla airfield has been sufficiently damaged that it will not fly any offensive missions for the next couple of days but it has not been completely closed. That is fine as all I wanted to do was destroy and damage enough of the P-40Es that some will remain trapped until tomorrow and will be destroyed in the second day's raids. I believe that this objective has been achieved.

Clark Field has been well and truly closed. With a minimum of 32 planes destroyed on the ground and the airfield suffering well over 600 individual hits, albeit from 50Kg bombs), the air defences at Clark have been rendered impotent. I should have no trouble destroying the survivors on the ground tomorrow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Pearl Harbor [Oahu] , at 114,72

I used my single port attack against Manilla. Thus the strike against Pearl concentrated solely on the airfield. Since the Vals have less value against BBs than the Kates I chose to preferentially sacrifice them ( one other thing of note: Sid tells me that he mistakenly doubled the amount of AAA at PH by counting every gun there as both disabled and in full working order. This makes the first strike against PH particularly bloody since I was already in the midst of planning when he told me this and wasn't going to start all over again. It is fixed in the latest version of the mod though.) in order to save the Kates.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/08/41

Lots and lots of bloody landings all over the place. Essentially though losses are entirely acceptable and the concentration on just a few targets should ensure that those targets fall quickly enough to support the necessary second phase operations.

BC Repulse has gotten off quite lightly in terms of overall damage. On the other hand this system damage will all add up and prevent it fleeing speedily. Any ship which isn't out of the area in two days is as good as dead as I am going to close this area down very tightly. At that time if it moves, it will die.

Well, well, well. It looks like the port at Manilla has been emptied as well. It looks like Andy has decided that he might as well take his chances on his ships and subs sinking at sea trying to escape rather than leaving them in port as stationary targets. Overall I believe this is the best choice available to him. It won't save most of them but it will cause me to expend a lot more effort and time in hunting them down and destroying them.

It looks like the US CVs have sortied their SBDs to Hawaii in an effort to add their weight to any ripostes. Good, this will be an excellent opportunity to whittle down some of those US Navy units. It is also an important indicator that I do not have to worry about significant USN raids on KB in the 10 days or so in which it will have to cover my invasion fleet and BBs as I dance around PH whittling down the enemy battleline.

The battleline will either stay in port, in which case I'll withdraw to 7 hexes and level bomb them into heavy damage with my Kates, run for it, in which case I'll simply hunt them down on the high seas quite easily, or stay under PH's AAA envelope but in formed TFs. If it stays under PH's FlAK umbrella it will bleed KB dry but that's a price I'm willing to pay. With Hawaii, the Aleutians and most of what matters in the south-eastern Pacific under my control, the Phillipines, Malasia and DEI neutralised and India under rapid, vicious attack directly from the route of march I am willing to aver that I will be able to find the time to pull KB out of the line and train its replacement pilots back up to 90+ average experience.

As expected the Dutch impale themselves on my CVLs as they head north through the Malacca straits covering the Ceylon invasion convoy - a 2 division undertaking which I am visualising as a non-armoured amphibious version of the much-beloved Operational Manoeuvre Group. I view Ceylon as being at the deepest extent of the enemy's operational depth and a target of such importance that taking it will unhinge the entire enemy defensive line. As such it is an operational target which unhinges a defensive strategy - pretty much the definition of a target worthy of being the focus of an Operational Manoeuvre Group.

One nice thing under RHS is the number of leakers. Despite being outnumbered 4 to 1 the Wildcats bought enough time for 14 of the 17 attacking planes to make it into attack position. Unfortunately for the Allies Japanese CLs are nimble opponents.

Interestingly there is a very marked difference in survivability between faster and slower bombers. The faster the strike planes the more of them make it through even without escort. In other RHS games I've noticed that the G4M is massively more survivable than the G3M and much of this survivability seems to come from its superior speed. In short, speed matters in terms of strike survivability and it matters a lot more than it does in stock. Fast bombers now DO have a chance of breaking through even heavy CAP with minimal losses.

Pretty good exchange rate for these PTs. They have sunk a DD and an APD in return for locally heavy but strategically insignificant losses.

Palmyra should fall over the next 2 or 3 days.

Below you can see the remainder of Force Z battling the Japanese battleline off Johore Bahru. Allied losses were extremely heavy with over half of Force Z being sunk but two of my battleships will be stuck in repair yards until mid-42. This is a cost I am more than willing to pay as the only value these battleships have for me are their conversions to heavily-armoured carriers in early 1945.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/09/41

Operations continue. After the results of the past two days I think that the strategic variant I will enact will be as follows:

1. Phased, "dancing" landings at Hilo/Kona. I will land some troops and then pull the troopships out before night falls, continually inviting the Allied fleet to commit to a counter-amphibious role... a role which will leave it stranded at sea and easy prey for my torpedo-bombers.

2. A slow expansion into the southern pacific such that Andy is given every opportunity to gather sufficient strength to counter my landings. I want him to meet my forces with his such that I can capitalise upon my aerial superiority. The more quickly I move the poorer the airfields I will have and the less force he will be able to bring to bear to oppose me. Neither of these is compatible with the loss ratio I wish to create.

3. KB-CVE is going to sweep down via Merak, covering the amphibious assault on Merak before pushing through the Merak/Teloekboetang channel with a view to sinking the Allied shipping which is seeking to escape westward out of range of my airbases at Johore and Kendari before turning north to India or south to Australia.

4. I wish to demonstrate that it is not necessary to have CVAs available in order to strike at India in December 41 and January 42. To this end my CVLs will push through the Malacca straits destroying whatever merchant shipping they find and conduct maskirovka operations against India.

5. Indian Maskirovka: I have 2 divisions loaded on my fastest transports. They are NOT, however, combat-loaded on those transports and will take an age to unload. As such they provide a perfect target for the Royal Navy battleline. I intend to lure both the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy into battle in the seas around Ceylon with a view to attriting them to nothingness. At that point in time my real landing forces ( approximately 4 additional divisions in the first wave with another 6 divisions to follow within 2 weeks) will land near Bombay under cover of my CVA and battleline. This will be my Operational Manoeuvre Group for the Indian campaign. I don't need to push through to victory, I just need to establish a useful, uncloseable Betty base within range of the SLOC between Karachi and Aden and will then be able to finish off the cut off troops in India at my leisure.

At that point in time I will need to land in Burma and decide about whether Oz or China will be next. China is the stage of an even greater maskirovka but the details are tricky so I won't go into detail on that until such time as I'm ready to spring that particular trap.

Elsewhere the massacre of the defenceless merchants continues. Great training for my pilots and a marked problem for the Allies as it limits their ability to ship reinforcements from point to point in the first few months. It doesn't make it impossible, it just makes it a little more difficult which is something the Allies in WiTP are often unfamiliar with. Logistical redundancy is almost a given for them.

Don't forget though that these are all 100Kg bombs and not 250Kg bombs. So, while the number of hits is impressive in almost all cases a single 250Kg bomb hit would have done roughly as much damage. Still, every bit of damage slows them down for my torpedo-bombers.

The CVEs close the Merak/Teloekboetang passage and B4Ys sink the Repulse. Just goes to show you, if you throw enough outmatched planes at something they will, eventually, achieve something. This sort of logic will become all too pervasive in 1944.

Yup, never underestimate the power of the Jean. I've scored a few successes with them in my own mod.

BTW, Nemo, a tiny little request for your AAR. Don't post such long combat reports. You put into bold text what you want to focus on, so maybe leave out the rest? Makes it easier to read...

Terminus,

Good point... I will amend as suggested. I will occasionally continue to post the full text as one of the things I want to show in the mod is the increased number of leakers...  Am posting one more turn tonight and will use the abridged presentation. Let me know what you think.
