AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/25/41

Adlertag !!! Bataan, Georgetown and a half-dozen bases dotted around Rabaul are attacked. Guam is the only one to hold out. I expect this to have an extremely discouraging effect on Andy's psyche which will give me the impetus I need to carry on the Indian invasion despite the paucity of my resources.

Elan, toujours l'elan.

Note the vastly toned down bombardment effects in RHS... No longer does Japan have recourse to nuclear bombardments. I happen to think that they may have gone too far but it is definitely a change for the better compared to stock.

It is worth remembering that the enemy still have teeth. 80 enemy aircraft are destroyed in return for 11 Zeroes and the enemy dive-bombers manage to hit Akagi with two 500lb bombs. Fortunately they hit one of the two carriers which were most likely to be able to shrug off such hits and both bombs bounced from the flight deck. It could, however, have been a very different story.

A 1000lb bomb pretty much ruins Tsugaru. I am doubtful whether it will be able to make port. This is a pity since Tsugaru is a CML - converted minelayer able to lay 150 mines at a time. This sort of ship is worth its weight in God.

At extreme cost another small Allied raid pushes through my CAP and manages to score some hits. CVE Chuyo has over 50 sys damage, stopping all flight operations and its survival looks doubtful. I was intending to land 6 divisions north of Bombay somewhere but I am going to have to detach a division to land into the guns at Pangrim in order to capture a Level 3 port suitable for docking Chuyo and its priceless fighter and attack groups.

And here you can see the situation in Malaysia and Sumatra. Especially note the prepped training ground north of Mersing.

Well I come from the school of thought that those French officers were onto something. They just needed to add a modicum of tactical sense to the mix.

As to commenting while reading Andy's AAR... Well, so long as you don't breach the FOW I think it is all fine. I read both sides of several AARs and feel free to comment in them - but take care not to breach FOW.

Wow - while I have reservations about the internal consistency of the mod (check out Iron Storm for a well done alternate history mod, basically Operation Matador and a BB focus) it certainly has been entertaining!

Hmm, maybe a "hell in the pacific" version would be fun (giving Japanese enough to guarantee Hawaii and others, but then assuming the USA, and a lesser extent UK, make PTO the focus)

Okonumiyaki,

Well Andy and I actually discussed Iron Storm when we were hammering out the details of this mod. It was his feeling ( and my remembrance from reading the single AAR of that mod) that the Japanese advance was stalled very quickly due to the fact that the Allies were given their "goodies" pretty much from the start. This is one of the reasons that I decided to front-load the goodies for Japan but wait till late 42 and 43 to give the Allies their goodies. Otherwise I was worried that the Japanese would just be halted in place.

One thing I would say though is that ( and Andy is good at this) one must differentiate between the effect the mod has on this game and the effect playing me in a free for all game has. When I've AARed other non-WITP games I'd say that it was often noted that I was able to maintain offensive momentum ( and conduct deep strikes) with forces that others would consider spent and with non-existent margins which would force most others to cancel their operations. As such the Indian maskirovka was really shocking and something Andy has focussed on massively ( precisely as I intended) but if you look at it Trincomalee hasn't fallen and it isn't even in danger of falling. I will get an Indian mainland base long before Trincomalee falls. Andy is still too psychologically shocked by that strike to see that its only decisive effect has been the destruction of the Royal Air Force - something which he had a choice in.

As to the Allies making the PT the focus... Well, I think that happens in this mod. The Allies get about 6 extra infantry divisions, several hundred additional fighters, Corsairs on carriers from January 43, P51s from September 42 and hordes of additional BBs, CAs, extremely potent CA and CL upgrades. From January 1943 the Japanese player is going to be facing an Allied player who gets 450 front-line fighters ( 170 Hellcats, 60 CV-capable Corsairs, 120 non-CV capable Corsairs, 30 to 50 P-51s, about 40 P-38s, 40 or so P-40Es and a gaggle of Spits and Hurris) per month. Again, the balance exists NOT in the first month of the war but over the course of the war. The only major advantage over stock on December 7th is that the Japanese have about 100 extra Zeroes and 2 extra infantry divisions. I have tried to make it so that the Japanese get access to more "goodies" at a measured pace throughout the first year of war but that on 1st January 1943 the balance changes back very quickly with Corsairs and vast numbers flowing to the Allied squadrons.

Still though it is true that the only way we'll be able to figure out the true balance is in the playing of the game. It is possible I've gotten it wrong but both of us independently assessed the mod before playing it and came to almost exactly the same conclusion as to when and how the balance will change throughout the game. Essentially from January 43 the balance shifts in favour of the Allies with Japan really only being capable of defensive actions from that time onward. The balance goes more in the Allies favour throughout 1943 before being pegged back a bit in the beginning of 44, increasing again throughout 44 until, again, in 45 being pegged back by the appearance on the scene of a new generation of dedicated kamikaze weapons. I intend to engage in a fully formed and fully prepared kamikaze war from the first moment possible... I believe that under RHS A2A combat in which leakers are almost guaranteed kamikazes, particularly the Ki-115 sabre, could prove truly devastating.

This is a bad move on Andy's part. Obviously whatever he sends to Hilo at this stage will represent his maximal effort. Since this maximal effort is only 4 DDs and 1 BB it is a force my battleline can face down with little risk. As such I will commit the battleline to a surface raid of Pearl Harbour. I am unsure as to whether or not the guns at PH will fire on any Japanese ships entering the hex or not so this could prove a painfully costly experience. Still, c'est la guerre.

Well, it looks like PH has some life left in it yet. 28 Zeroes escort 81 bombers to PH and meet 50 enemy fighters. Just a bit more harrassment. After receiving the turn Andy has objected to these nuisance parachute drops so I've undertaken to stop them for now... He really does seem to have very constrained views as to what should happen, how and when. Real life just isn't like that. You can't say that an enemy commander's decisions were "unfair". If he has the capability and you don't prevent him exploiting it then he will be victorious and you will lose ( or more probably just be dead). Still, since these are just nuisance raids I'll stop them rather than upset Andy further.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/30/41

Today was another day that drove Andy to distraction. He sounds incredibly pissed off about the result of the fighting at Pearl Harbour but, to be honest, if you try to sneak ships into a port like that then one has to expect them to be attacked. I do think that unloading while docked should be allowed for BOTH sides but so long as it isn't allowed for Japan then it shouldn't be allowed for the Allies either. I've read nothing to say that Japan unloaded its ships in a manner completely different from the Allies.

Fully 16 enemy ships were sunk overnight including the Battleship Nevada. Not bad. Mochizuki looks certain to sink and one of my BBs took a couple of 16 inch shells and has system damage of almost 50. Japanese BBs are unbelievably fragile. The Nevada took over 40 16 inch shell hits before succumbing. I wish I had a few ships like it in my battleline.

I ordered in the Nells and Bettys again as this was another alpha strike. The results of the day have decided me to stick around. In the past week the Allies have lost over 1000 planes, the majority of them around Hawaii. I believe Andy's back is now broken and it is only a matter of time before he starts pulling out his forces. He hasn't been able to mount a bomber raid for some days and my recon tells me it is probably due to excessive runway damage.

I am landing a division at Pangim to take the level 3 port there to provide a port for my damaged CVE. At the very least I want to get the squadrons off the ship before it sinks but, ideally, I'd also like to save the ship. System and flotation damage are both in the low 70s and it has at least 4 or 5 days of travel before it reaches Pangim so things don't look good but one has to try.

8 ships are unloading this division. The division wasn't combat-loaded onto small transports as it wasn't planned to be using it for an assault but the damage to the Chuyo necessitates improvisation. I expect to lose all 8 transports and the DE escorting them to the coastal defences at Pangim, a few 9.2 inch guns and a dozen 6 inch guns. Truly lethal !

And this takes us to year's end. I'll be posting analysis of the first month later on tonight. Essentially though Andy's acceptance of the maskirovka at ceylon and his willingness to commit to PH have made it the bloodiest first month I've ever had in a PBEM - and many multiples bloodier than any first month I've ever seen in any other player's AAR. No wonder Andy is reeling. I tend to be more used to massive losses as, in Soviet doctrine, that's just the price you pay for your momentum and there's nothing wrong with massive casualties so long as you result is commensurate with the losses.

Well here's the Intelligence screen on the 1st January 1942. The main things which immediately leap out at one are the heavy Allied losses in all categories.

The Allies have lost 339 ships, 2298 planes and 2463 army loss points. However Japanese aerial losses have also been extremely heavy with 1,224 planes being destroyed, mostly in the air. In fact if one removes the planes destroyed on the ground the Allies have only lost 300 more airframes + pilots than the Japanese. This is a crucial point.

In the air the Japanese have managed to shoot down slightly more than 2.5 Allied planes for each plane they have lost but still, overall, are falling below a 2:1 exchange rate.

In terms of shipping Japan is doing better with an almost 11:1 exchange rate in terms of hulls and over 13 to 1 in terms of points.

The really outstanding area, however, is the army loss point ratio. I am much better at ground combat than I am at naval or aerial combat and that shows in the very low Japanese losses during this initial phase of operations. Obviously, losses will climb as Allied resistance strengthens but the low losses this month mean that I have succesfully preserved my force for operations in India, a key goal.

And here's a short summary of the ships lost. I haven't included a few ARs, AVDs and AVs the Allies have lost ( and one AGP).

Of note: 21 of the subs were sunk in Manilla harbour but 7 were sunk in the high seas by my ASW ship and air effort ( which has been intensive if largely undocumented). I'm pretty pleased to have sunk 7 subs in about 24 days at sea.

Below you see a listing of the top Japanese pilots. I noticed a few interesting things while going through this list:

a) While the number of WIA and MIA pilots is distributed fairly evenly throughout the number of pilots with kills the only three KIA pilots in the list are all in the top 15 pilots.

b) Note how well the Rufes have done. The top three Rufes have accounte for 29 planes all by themselves. To put this into perspective one has to bear in mind that only 9 Rufes have been actively engaged in combat. So, early on the Rufes really are extremely effective. I realised this early on in the month and immediately doubled my monthly output of Rufes as I think they ought to be able to provide highly effective CAP for undeveloped bases - an important consideration as I slowly move on Noumea and Australia.

c) WiTP models the 90/10 split pretty well. This is pretty much the theory that most things in the world can be divided up into a 90/10 ratio plus inverse. What does that mean in war? Well it means that 10% of the pilots probably get 90% of the kills. My top ten pilots account for 128 kills which is extremely close to 10% of the 1290 air to air kills I've scored so far. I think that's an extremely interesting finding.

Which plane types have shot down enemy planes and how succesful have they been?

A5M4 - 5 kills spread between 5 pilots.

A6M2 - Hordes of kills with 80 Zero pilots being experten already.

Rufes: 4 out of the 9 starting Rufe pilots have scored kills. In total my Rufes have accounted for 32 enemy planes so far.

Nells: 3 Nells have accounted for 4 enemy planes. WO Kurakane of G2 Dai Chitose Kokutai has managed to shoot down two enemy fighters. Not bad.

Bettys: Bettys have accounted for 7 enemy planes.

Mavises have 3 kills.

Ki-43s: 7 kills spread between 4 pilots. To be fair though I've held the Ki-43s in reserve preferring to use my Zeroes at the point of the spear and my Oscars to secure the hafting.

Ki-44s: 2 measly kills. I am very disappointed in this plane. Because of how poorly this plane has performed I have been pouring supplies and HI into expanding Ki-109 production. I expect the Ki-109 to be a really nasty beast for the Allies right up to mid-43.

Comparison of Ki-109 vs A6M2.
Speed: Ki-109 has superior maximum speed 348 vs 331 and slightly poorer cruise speed 205 vs 207.

Climb rate: Ki-109 has superior climb rate of 2982 vs 2642 for the Zero.

Manoeuvre: Ki-109 wins again. 30 vs 28.

Durability: Ki-109 wins again. 12 vs 10.

Armour: Ki-109 wins again. 1 vs 0.

Gun power: Both are armed with 2 cannons and 2 MGs and have a firepower rating of 16.

Bombload: Ki-109 carries a single 250Kg bomb while the Zero carries 2 x 60 Kg bombs.

Range: Zero wins hands down. It has a range of 11 hexes. The Ki-109 has a maximum range of 3 hexes.

Carrier capability: Ki-109 is not carrier-capable while the A6M2 is.

So, essentially, the A6M2 is being built to provide long-range escort capability throughout the war and carrier-capable fighters during the first 18 months of the war while the Ki-109 is going to be used to support the fighting in China and the Soviet Union and provide CAP for my bases.

My goal is to build up to a monthly prouction of 240 A6M2s per month and 150 Ki-109s per month. I will use the Ki-109s to fill out my squadrons and fight as much as possible while building up as large a reserve of A6M2s as possible. Once the A6M2 auto-upgrades in mid-43 I won't be able to build anymore and I think I'm going to need long-range escorts throughout the entire war, particularly when kamikaze strikes really get going. If I can keep losses to an average of 100 per month I could build a reserve of close to 3,000 planes by mid-43 and that ought to be sufficient to see me through the next two years.

RE: Empires Ablaze: Nemo vs Andy Mac

Post by Nemo121 »

Here's a current front-line trace.

As you can see the Japanese advance has left quite a lot of Allied bases uncaptured in its wake. As my reinforcements make for the front they are going to land and mop up these bases.

In addition I have 6 divisions onboard ship off the coast of India plus 2 more in Ceylon and will be landing there soon with another 9 division-equivalents ( including the tank Brigades) ready to transfer once Singapore falls.

I'm betting that 18 divisions plus complete aerial and naval supremacy should be sufficient to eliminate resistance in India quite quickly.

Now, a little critique.

I think that the main thing I've noticed in the first month is that Andy has failed to pressurise my forces in China and the Soviet Union sufficiently.

In the air the loss of 20 or 30 more planes and the need to station a Zero unit or two in Kwantung would have been enough to derail my invasion of Hawaii. This was well within Andy's capabilities but he chose not to do this. Andy has spoken to me of an overpowered Japan but, honestly, I feel that:
a) much of the issue is due to my play style and not actually any overpowering of Japan. I hit deep weakness hard and fast and that's always difficult to defend against.
b) that he hasn't made enough of his advantages in this mod. There is a reason the Soviet Union is active and some of Japan's early strengthening is done precisely because the Soviet Union can go active in December 41 and mount border raids, air raids and sub attacks etc.

This failure to press me in China and the Soviet Union has allowed me to divert really significant aerial and ground forces. For example, I have no fighters or bombers in Kwantung ( except for a couple of training squadrons sitting in Pyongyang going to class every day) and have robbed 4 divisions of infantry which are on their way to India. Similarly China is in the process of being pilfered as the Chinese there are incredibly quiescent.

Even the DEI is unbelievably quiet. I was worried that Merak might be counter-attacked but Andy isn't doing anything. He isn't even pressing attacks home against Kendari. I haven't had to face a single bomber raid on my actual bases there. Just how quiet things are can be gauged by the fact that the totality of my fighter force in the DEI comprises just 12 Tojos.

The small riposte at Port Moresby was well calculated but apart from that the Allies haven't tried taking the offensive anywhere. Andy is running a very careful, unaggressive campaign so far and while that is preserving his force for the great defensive battles he is waging it is also true that it is allowing me to concentrate maximal force at these points of contact and win these battles. I think that if he were to just split 20% of the force he is losing in these battles and use it offensively elsewhere that he would gain great advantage... and with the Soviet and Chinese forces he wouldn't even need to divert any forces, the are all already there doing nothing. All he has to do is give them attack orders and they will begin drawing off my planes, pilots and troops and weakening the spear tip.

So, really I think the main problem Andy has is that he isn't tying down any of my forces in subsidiary theatres and therefore he is facing the full, might of my best forces at the spear tip and, inevitably, losing. He needs to begin trying to tie down forces in subsidiary theatres or I will continue freeing up forces from China and Kwantung and over-run India, Northern Oz and Alaska over the next few months. If he doesn't do this then, yes, he will face overwhelming forces but it'll be his own fault for not tieing them down elsewhere, IMO.

Even now I'm in a much better defensive position in China and the Kwantung area than I was just 3 weeks ago because I'm upgrading from Nates to Ki-109s ( which are infinitely better fighters) and I've gotten to shuffle my forces around and begin building the fortifications I need. Again, China and the Soviet Union are golden opportunities to tie down massive portions of the Japanese Army and Air Force respectively. If the Allied player doesn't use these regions to fulfill those roles then, yes, he is going to face a steamroller but, IMO, it is his own fault for not doing so.

RE: Empires Ablaze: Nemo vs Andy Mac

Post by Nemo121 »

Well, unfortunately, it looks like this game might be over. We got to January 5th before I landed somewhere north of Bombay Andy hadn't realised I could land... thus unhinging his entire defensive line ( which was my intent). Following discussions I agreed to go back a day and land elsewhere instead as I wanted him to feel he had as good a chance of defending India as he was going to get given the overall situation. He then commented that he thought he had a chance of holding India.

I responded that he didn't have a chance because the entire SAA ( 16 division equivalents) plus a few division I'd freed from China and Kwantung were heading for India. Now, the only reason I am able to send such a large force to India is because:
a) he has been remarkably quiescent in the DEI, allowing me to run riot with just 200 AV worth of troops.
b) he hasn't counter-attacked anywhere in the Aleutians or deep South Pacific or PM - If he counter-attacked with just a division he could take everything I've taken ( except Hilo)
c) He hasn't threatened any of my holdings in China or Kwantung... there's a reason China and the Soviet Union are active. Allied players MUST use them to tie down Japanese forces and prevent them being transferred elsewhere.
d) A combination of the above has allowed me to thin my garrisons massively and send everything not tied down to India. I view this as simply good strategy.

We've spoken and I think he is right in that the sort of bypassing, deep strike game I play isn't to his tastes and that, therefore he won't enjoy this sort of game... and I don't want to force an honourable opponent to play a game they won't enjoy... and I want to be clear that Andy is a very honourable opponent and I'd highly recommend him to anyone seeking a more historical game.

In any case he has said he wishes to end the game.
I have offered to swap sides and play on as the Allies as I really don't think the situation is anywhere near as hopeless as he feels. He has refused this as he doesn't really dig Japan.
I have asked him to reconsider and am awaiting a response.
If he doesn't want to continue would anyone else want to take over? At this stage I just can't face doing another turn 1 and whenever I do one I end up being given out to for making it "too devastating" or somesuch... Hell, war plans are supposed to be devastating, that's their raison d'etre.

So, anyways, if anyone feels like they would enjoy a relatively freeform game starting from 1st January 42 let me know. This all awaits Andy giving his OK on releasing the password etc. My ONLY condition for any Allied player (or team of players) wanting to step in is that they "know what they're getting into". I'm open to discussing new house rules etc also.

Empires Ablaze: Challenge Accepted

Well, after a significant bit of down time while a new opponent was found to step into Andy's shoes and for that opponent to get up to speed with the situation we are on the cusp of recommencing the game from 1st January 1942. Jagdfluger has agreed to take up the mantle and we should exchange the first turns over the next few days.

So far it looks like the only significant change in house rules is that ground war in the Soviet Union will no longer be forbidden until 1st January 1943. We have agreed to a week for redeployment purposes and then either side can kick off a ground war in Manchuria/Soviet Union. What this, in effect, means is that I will be facing a Soviet offensive from 8th January 1942 [:D]. I also expect to face a resurrgent China and ground offensives in that area.

Of note: I advised my opponent to fully read this AAR before agreeing to take on the game so he knows my plans and dispositions and will, undoubtedly, use this knowledge to maximise the effectiveness of his dispositions. This is entirely within the parameters of our agreement. I expect and hope he will do everything possible to maximise his chances within the rather wide parameters of our game.... in my other PBEM my opponent is using Soviet fighters and pilots to defend Port Moresby and India even before the Soviet Union and Japan are at war... although obviously we are using the fiction that these Soviet pilots and planes are members of "volunteer squadrons" just as happened in Spain, Korea, Vietnam etc.

So, since I haven't seen any real mentions about his style I thought I'd ask if anyone who had played him had any insights?

*chuckle* Umm, thanks? [8D]

It'll be interesting  to say the least... Obviously though one strategem would be to give up Manchuria, hold out on the Chinese border ( with those lovely urban hexes) and then just amphibious land behind the new Soviet front, cutting their LCUs off from supplies and gaining an easy victory over the rest of the Soviet Union. A variation of this is being used to remove 15 Field Armies from Jutland13's order of battle in my other PBEM and I expect it would be succesful here. Nothing leads people into unwise, headlong advance more succesfully than success.... very few ever question whether their sucesses are too easy, they just happily accept the result.

So, perhaps Soviet forces rolling forward throughout Manchuria and Korea and into China would be precisely the worst thing that could happen for the Soviets? [;)]

Well, that's that settled then.
