RE: Hellcats

Post by Andy Mac »

Just a quick update I have commenced a night strategic bombing campaign I launched a risky daylight raid but got away with it I am following it up with a series of night raids from Wake and shortly from Hue.

I doubt I will be able tyo cripple PZB's industry however every point he repairs costs 1,000 supplies so roll on strategic bombing !!!

In other news the first TF commenced loading at Pearl for operations against the Japanese mainland

SAC Strikes Back !!!

Post by Andy Mac »

As you are all aware the strategic bombing offensive against the Home Islands has commenced.

8 B29 Groups Operating from Wake (2 are in transit to Hue)
6 B29 Groups Operating from Hue (although stood down awaiting supplies at present).
1 B29 Group Operating from Attu

In total 15 Bomb Groups of the 11th and 20th Air Forces will bombard Japanese industry to pulp.

So far 11th AF has launched 1 daring daylight raid on Tokyo supported by Carrier Fighters
2 Night Raids on Tokyo/Hakodate and 1 Day raid on Hakodate (at 1,000 feet which put morale in the toilet !!!!)

They are now all stood down as morale and readiness are so low after my 1,000 foot gaffe

For a night raid out of 150 a/c I am lucky to sortie 50
Most raids from Attu have been 8 - 12 planes so c 12 planes per Bomb Group or 25% sortie for a night raid.

My targets have been Shinden Factories, Armament Factories, Zero, Grace, HI I am spreading it about because each damage point costs 1,000 to repair so I want multiple hits on industry in a base as it sucks supply.

i.e. in Tokyo if I hit 6 different targets then next day 6,000 tonnes of supply are consumed if I hit 1 target hard only 1,000 are used.

This is going to be a long battle but we will be victorious !!!

If PzB has set them to repair! While I would most certainly repair a Shinden factory (I would also guard it heavily [:D]) I wouldn´t repair a HI or arm factory at that time of the game... Of course it also depends on the supply level. Don´t know how it looks like in stock that late in the game. Perhaps he has 6.000.000 supplies so it wouldn´t hurt him to repair them. And when it´s Shinden time your life will be harder anyway! [:D] Shinden factories should be your no 1 worry IMO! When I see tests of rookie pilots in Shindens shooting down veteran pilots in Corsairs at 2 or 3:1 then this will boost PzB ability on the defense enormously. Will try the search function if I can find the tests (doubt it though.. [8|]).

I would target every Shinden factory that is in range. Even if you take losses, destroying the factories NOW will result in far fewer losses later IMO.

What about Reppu is it any good ?

I have been trying not to specifically target Shinden factories as its a tad gamey to attack just one target soley due to perfect intel so I attacked Oscar and Grace factories as well but if they are that good......

Shinden are very good, not atomic bomb, but manned by very average pilots (50's), they hurt the escort on a 1,5-2/1 basis ( you lose 2 hellcats or 1,5 P51 per Shinden downed), The Reppu is just as good as the Hellcat, so with average pilots, sheer numbers should help overwhelm it..

Ummm but numbers is not something I have ....

I am only producing 144 Hellcats and 100 Corsairs a month hell even my Wildcat pool is below 500 frames.

Ummm errr now you have me worried I think I need to land and get a base ASAP my timetable has just been accelerated

My Hellcat pool is still empty and the F4U1D has less than 100 in it.....

Remember I dont get Bearcats or Sea Furies

Sea Fury at least would eat Shindens and Reppus for breakfast and its appearance in numbers is no more incredible than Shinden and Reppus arriving....

I'd aim for resources if you're going after raw materials. In the mid to late war I've always been able to stockpile pretty large reserves of oil, but resources are always in short supply (manpower sucks them down, and you can't turn it off).

Just my opinion - but if you're going for economic strikes, resources hurt in more ways than one...

Do you get Tigercats at least? Yes, seems odd that a game that can end 1946 doesn't have Bearcats/ Sea Furies/ Meteors

Nope no tigercats I was always one of the players who said no need for late war aircraft however giving them to one side when that side also has control of production but not the other side may be unbalancing - we shall see how it works out it should be interesting to say the least.....

OK guys Assault Force Yankee is now 360 miles north of Pearl consisting of the US 10th Army X Corps has 3 Divs and XI Corps has 3.67 Divs

Total force including armour is equivalent to 7 Divisions.

It is covered by 3 CVE's which will be joined by a TF of 4 more in mid ocean.

A further Fleet Carrier TF and heavy surface force will join them in due course.

Assault Force Zulu consisting of a further 3 Corps of 6th US Army and the 16th Army Group Reserve Corps will be departing from Pearl within 3 days.

In total 1,600 ships are being committed to this attack with TF's rendevouing from tarawa, Kwajalein, Marcus, US West Coast and Pearl.

Its my single biggest combined operation with nearly 400,000 men and god knows how many tanks and vehicles set to one objective GET A FIGHTER BASE IN RANGE OF JAPAN

Nothing else matters !!!!

I was hoping to reinforce with a strong Corps from the West but it is now clear that fighting a convoy through the gap between PI and Formosa is not possible

I tried it with my AK convoy and my carrier strength in the West is insufficient.

Instead the carriers and surface vessels will be used to fight a convoy south to Darwin where it will pick up and re supply malaya.

After I secure SEA and destroy Japanese forces in the south I will immediately begin resting troops for the next phase

You might want to ship some oil to the bases you've acquired there.

Get the factories to start producing supplies for you, and cut down on the logistics a bit...

20th AF (Hue) Had 179 B29's operational and an effort strike was launched in daylight against Hiroshima again BDA indicates heavy damage.

18th April

11th AF (Wake) 125 Operational B29's ordered a night raid on Tokyo.

20th AF (Hue) 197 Operational B29's ordered to hit Nagasaki by night.

Does anyone know what I should target and how many hits I need to cause a firestorm ? I suspect I need to hit them harder than I am currently able.

Andy

Afaik there was an analysis a while back that showed that a night attack was useless in creating firestorms. Strong day attacks did create enough fire to damage all the industries to some degree.

PZB has probably gathered enough HI and resources and oil in his pools that it would be most effective to target his airplane and engine factories.
