RE: Striking from Heaven: Nemo (J) vs 2ndACR (A)

Post by Nemo121 »

Unfortunately 2ndACR has to withdraw due to some real life issues... No opprobium attaches to this choice at all.

So, we have 4 options:
1. The game ends here and now.

2. A suitably brave player or group of players ( Alfred, Hartwig etc? ) seeks to turn the Allied fortunes around. If the Allies make it into 1943 then the Japanese are pretty much doomed.

3. I take over the Allied side and with a suitable period of time to allow for rebuilding ( perhaps a month ) since the Allies are in rather nasty shape right now we recommence the game and fight it out.

4. We jump back a little in time.

Personally I don't care about winning, I just want to be pushed to play my best so I'm perfectly happy to take over the Allied side and take things from there.

I should point out that the Allied side in this game is significantly reinforced over the Allied side in the game I have with Damian. They have increased fighter reinforcement rates, better and quicker upgrades and more flexible upgrade paths. So, the Allied position is far from hopeless as it is.

I would like to invite people or groups of players who are interested in playing on to let me know in this thread. My preference would be to play on as Japan but I would be willing to play on as Allies given a sufficient breathing space to conduct some much-needed redeployment or the ability to step 1 to 2 months back in the past before some irredeemable errors were made. All would be up for negotiation.

In the end the Allies will win. They are just too strong in 1943 and 1944 for this not to be the outcome and, properly managed, the Allies can even be winning by end-42. I repeat that the Allied position is far from hopeless, it just requires some ruthlesness.

So, no takers to take over as Japan with a 55000+ to 10,000 victory point lead in June 1942? That's a pity.

Nemo,

I might consider taking over the Allied side to get a spanking. I learned a lot from most spankings I received in my life [8D]. I only ask myself "am I up to the task"... There are several caveat, however:

1) Right now, I will be S L O W. Cannot guarantee more than 2-3 turns per week. This should get better by the end of March though.
2) Not sure whether this would be much fun to you - I do not think I am a good or experienced player. On the other hand, with a bunch of seasoned advisors...
3) Can you link me to the detailed info on this mod, including what I need to do to install ? I have never played anything but vanilla so far...
4) Could you provide a file for the Allied a) for the point of time this game is at and b) a point of time you are thinking about moving back to ? I'll pm my e-mail to you.

To sum up: If you wish to keep this game alive and are not bothered by 1) a slow game and 2) a not very seasoned opponent but avid learner (as I understand from your AARs, you comment in interplayer-communication, which I appreciate a lot), I will consider taking over.

Regards

Hartwig

Hartwig... Email sent.  Slow isn't a problem. I have Real Life ( which always comes first ), another PBEM game and a testing committment so a slow game sounds just fine.

Advisors... Absolutely, have as many as you think is a good idea.

Best link for the mod is http://sites.google.com/site/empiresablaze/ which, I think, explains the concepts behind it.

All I can say is WOW, your a great player Nemo[&o] I just uploaded this mod and am looking for an opponent. I hope I fair better than your opponent did. I hope to play allies only due to the learning curve for Japan.
You have the ability to arouse various emotions in me: please select carefully.

This mod has some great "what ifs" added to it. It also demands someone with a good grasp on the Japanese economy and knows how to use Tracker to aid in managing it.

I'm looking forward to this mod being modified for AE when it comes out.

Miller,

No, not a great player, just someone who applies the basics thoroughly. Good luck in your game with BlitzK.

Interesting data so far on my new opponent - Hartwig... I've read all of his posts obviously and between his posts and his mails there are some interesting indicators. There have been mentions of, and links to, articles on CI ( crowd intelligence ) and not just the usual BS about the intelligence of crowds ensuring accuracy which is what we see in the mass media and elsewhere but also a rather more nuanced view of the potential perils of same.

Here's an interesting question he posed to me tonight as part of the discussion on rules
b) Do you know the solution for the world's most complicated chess problem ? I ask this because it is related to doing a "turn 1" (even if this is not the real turn 1, it is for me). It starts from the starting position of the pieces and is "White to move and win..." Let me know when you solved it...

This is, IMO, a nice little ploy to start getting to know me. Obviously it was important to give a reasonable answer without going into too much detail so here's what I replied:
b) The solution to that problem is the same as the solution to ANY chess problem, "Get to know your opponent and then cause dis-ease in his mind such that he defeats himself."

So, he wants to read me. M'uadib would be proud of him. 10 sci-fi geek awards for knowing the novel and 40 more for knowing which part of the novel I'm referencing ( hint: knife-fighting ).

The interesting question now is going to be just how he plays. He will, undoubtedly, single in on the DEI and the northern routes as good avenues of attack. Which of those he chooses will tell me a lot PARTICULARLY if he plays beneath his ability to try to anchor my expectations lower.

It can be quite tricky to discern if someone is just playing badly and that's the best they can do or if he's actually making intentional mistakes. I think though that if he plays well with the occasional foolish move then he is trying to anchor me low...

So, what does this mean? Well, he'll try to anchor my expectations low so that I become lax. What this means is that he'll probably try for ineffectual strikes on Exmouth followed by a raid on the DEI ( where I have left isolated bases rather unthreatened just to tempt this sort of ineffectual loss-leading enterprise ).

Since I can't really be bothered into letting him have significant forces transitting into the DEI right now I'll have to take that little atoll to the wet of Ceylon and base seaplanes there. I'll be happy to let him range up past Exmouth as that's a mis-allocation of force.

In the north I'll commit small garrisons to my holdings and begin building up the necessary forces for a stronger naval and aerial defence.

In the south my previous plan ( minus he NZ sweep which now has no operational surprise to bolster it ) will be carried out and the remainders of the Pacific will fall to my troops.

In China he should redeploy his forces westward into Vietnam. This should give me an opportunity for offensive action and I need to make sure to take this.

So, a big state of flux in which he'll be trying to mislead me as to his ability by playing slightly worse at the front lines while he gets his rear echelons into gear at top speed. Should be interesting.

RE: Striking from Heaven: Nemo (J) vs Hartwig

Post by Nemo121 »

So, quite a bit has happened in the past week of gametime.

Hartwig has ruthlessly exploited the leeway I gave him to bomb from Soviet bases ( which due to a game bug I can't retaliate against ) and he is trying many other tricks elsewhere to free up the situation ( landing a few troops outside of Bombay to try and free the troops there from their sitzkrieg ).

He is also most assuredly testing my defences elsewhere. I've gotten sniffs of merchant vessels all along my perimeter trying to see what my recon shell is like and how far he can expect to get when spotted. I've been watching and waiting for the past few days, letting them get in deep before launching co-ordinated attacks to kill as many as I can. Today my forces strike...

RE: Striking from Heaven: Nemo (J) vs Hartwig

Post by Nemo121 »

Hartwig's new "strategy" is to land troops using barges ( or small, damaged AKs and APs) at bases anywhere along my lines in an effort to annoy me to death. This, unfortunately, costs him ships and troops and, to be honest, trying to "annoy" an opponent with strategically meaningless landings is piss-poor strategy.

He's going to miss those ships in a year's time when he has the troops and planes to support major amphibious landings.

In other news in a couple of days time I'll have the last of the shipping I need in place at Noumea to perform the series of amphibious landings I have planned to take all of the necessary islands in the south-eastern Pacific. --- My recent CV raids have been aimed at preventing any last-minute reinforcements to the first phase of islands which will be invaded and appear to have been successful in that aim. The next stage is to land and overwhelm the ground defenders. It'll cost but it'll be worth it. Once I have Bora Bora and Papaete I'll be able to really prevent USN meddling in the Pacific --- which will give me the ability to focus on the Soviet Union and Australia - which are the next targets for amphibious invasion.

Wow, long delay in this AAR.

The basic news is that I landed a division-equivalent at Midway and took it in a single day. 2 of the regiments will move on to begin gathering experience and capturing important bases elsewhere.

My invasion forces in the Pacific continue to gather at Noumea. I have roughly 2,000 AV and slightly over 200 ships gathering at that base. They should be finished gathering in 5 days time so in, roughly, 1 week's time I'll begin rolling through the Pacific toward Panama.

I'm also within a few days of attacking, and taking, Karachi and then I'll orient on Delhi. In the meantime I've finally managed to bottle his forces up in Calcutta and am now free to begin unleashing my tank regiments to clear out the nuisance Brigades running around between Delhi and Calcutta. So, its mid-June and by mid-September I imagine we'll be finished with India.

Interestingly he seems to be setting Addu atoll up as some sort of base... Silly, I can easily land enough troops to take it so all he's really doing is ensuring that I get to kill lots of his troops when I force their surrender.

In the Soviet Union I have a tank regiment at Ulan Ude, blocking the flow of supplies to the east. Hartwig needs to react aggressively to this and, really, he needs to pull back from his current line and consolidate at Ulan Ude. Will he do this? No, he won't which is a significant error.

In other news the Imperial Shock Division has finally formed and is being used to threaten the eastern flank of his Soviet position by carrying out a major paraborne assault on a Soviet base at Adan.

So, all in all its all very much in hand.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.
