FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

Malaya-Bornéo area, 1942 january 13rd

Well done, Kuching is ours now and in good state with 90 fighters in CAP against any enemy raid.
The CV can leave the area, direction towards Palau for the support of the offensive against Amboina and Kendari

FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

China, 1942 january 14th

A big air battle above Changcha.
150 dive bombers escorted by 80 fighters are intercepted by a big CAP of more than one hundred fighters
of any nationality (US, Chinese, Dutch, English).
It was expected but not the Buffalo I which were absent the previous turn [:-]

Then occurs one of the biggest dogfight from the beginning of the war.

Our Tojo are a bit disappointing. 8 are shot down killing in the same time a dozen of enemy planes.
Our Nate are incredible of manuever but really, their weapons are too weak.
I will have to use faster and more powerful fighters like Oscar instead of.
28 are killed, especially because of the Buffalo I, quite manuevrable too.
But our planes are better. 58 enemy fighters are shot down.
Some remaining enemy fighters manage to shoot down 15 small bombers and 18 are destroyed
by a heavy Flak in addition.
But the biggest part of them crosses the CAP and destroys 23 fighters on ground.

Without being a failure, this raid isn't a real success, the losses being quite heavy.
I will come back to sweep before bombardment.

FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

Malaya, 1942 january 16th

VICTORY!! VICTORY!!

Singapore's fortress has fallen. 4 days after the beginning on the combats, submerged by ours troops
and air raids, the english surrended. We make 100000 prisonners.

Moreover and for once, the industrial centers are not completely destroyed.
Especially, the repair ship yard is still operationnal.
But, i won't make any repairing before the capture of main oil centers in this area.
They have priority.

Image

Now, we have to think to other invasions: there are Java, Burma and Andaman island

Our troops must rest a little bit at Singapore.
There is no doubt, one day i will face once again some enemy units i fought at Singapore.
Indeed, Emek made a lot of evacuation by submarine from Singapore to Rangoon.
These troops have been spotted going toward Mandalay.
I think Emek may choose this town to make a big resistance later.

Now, the 33th and 31th division, nearly arrived at Bangkok coming from China by boats, have been chosen to
walk toward Burma's capital Rangoon.

Image
(in green: 25 ground units detected at Mandalay; most are small part of units destroyed at Singapore
in green: evacuation road by SS coming from Singapore
in red: usual air strikes
in purple: next objective of the IJA)

China, january 15th-16th

In spite of the half success of the raid of the 14th, the number of enemy planes in China doesn't cease to grow up.
A lot of fighters but also many bombers.
So many plane on a so small base, hum, not reassuring [:(]

This threat is not acceptable and i decide to send some IJN air groups to support IJA air groups already here.

They arrived the 16th at Canton with a fighter CAP of Nate, Tojo and Oscar. I planned a raid for the 17th.

Image
(in yellow: reco information above Changcha
in red: 4 Zero Daitai ready to make a sweep on Changcha next day
in green: a lot of chinese units cross the river at Hankow in direction of Nangchang; Nangchang garrison just received 2 divisions for its defense
in dark purple: the japanese groud units rally is nearly over for a counter attack toward Honan
in green: about 40000 soldiers (21 chinese units) behind the river)

The groud war is very tensed in the sector.
Emek is making big concentration troops near Nangchang and Sinyang.
I hope my troops will hold, just the time for me to start the counter offensive toward Honan: it is a question of a couple of days.

A small balanced sheet of dogfight

Emek and i, we have exchanged (by pure curiosity) our respective list of top pilots. Here they are:

Image

Of course, the Zero are the best. But Nate had some kills too as the Oscar if
we remenber that this last plane made only one fihgt, during the Dutch raid on Johore Bahru.

Image

Interesting!! It shows that almost all enemy fighters managed to have kill, including obsolete chinese I-153c.
Of course, AVG's pilots are here.

And now the datas.

In a little bit less than one month and a half:

Japanese losses:
16 A6M2 Zéro + 40 Ki-27 Nate + 1 Ki-43 Oscar + 10 Ki-44 Tojo = 67 fighters

Allied losses:
80 Buffalo I + 13 P-40B Tomahawk + 12 P-40E Warhawk + 22 I-16c + 37 Brewster 339D + 23 P-36A Mohawk +
17 P-35A + 14 I-153c + 3 P-26A + 16 CW-21B Demon + 6 Wirraway + 5 P-43A Lancer = 248 fighters

so a ratio of 1/3.7.

It is quite good for the japs but most of our planes are modern which is not the case of most allied one's and
the Zero has still the bonus. This ratio will be hard to hold with time.
It will also depend on both players doctrine.

FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

China, 1942 january 17th

"It is far away the time our Zeros were flying in China and killing the small Polikapov fighters without any losses ..."

As planned, january 17th in the morning, 105 Zero take off Canton's airfields toward Changsha.
92 allied fighters managed to take off. A big dogfight in the chinese sky.

The P-40B tomahawk fight well, 1 kill for 1 loss; the chinese I-16c (less maneuvrable but nearly as fast as Zeros, well armed and protected) shot down 4 ou 5 jap and it is a shame, we lost 2 planes against Lysander ... .

Balanced sheet: 20 Zero lost and 20 pilots lost.

But Emek is very cruel with his pilots. Some P-26A and P-35A are engaged without any success.

Now, 74 enemy fighters has been destroyed so the ratio is ... 1/3.7 [X(] (the same in the previous post).

(in yellow: as amazing as it could be, the 18th, so the day after the previous raid,
there are still as many as allied fighters above Changcha; some Dutch fighters are now present too
)

I want to have done with.
The 19th in the morning, 350 bombers escorted by 170 fighters are taking off Canton, direction Changsha
where there is ... nothing??? [X(] .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Changsha , at 45,37

Allied ground losses:
119 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 21
Airbase supply hits 20
Runway hits 305
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Less than 10 planes probably damaged on field, are destroyed, that's all.
The airfield is very damaged now.
(Emek is practising very well the sidestepping art, he evacuated its planes on Chungking)
I am going to take avantage of this retreat to continue neutralization of this airfield.
But i must stay cautious because of a possible interception from Kweilin's airfield.

However, the 20th, our bombers are required for an other task.
For many weeks, we are making artillery bombardment on Wuchow chinese town.
But now, it seems that the ennemy is sending reinforcement troops.
The japanese local command claims an air support to catch the town before it is too late.
We have 2 divisions and 1 eng reg which seems a little just against 3 chinese corps but we try.
During all the day, our 2E bombers as our dive bombers are sent on ennemy troops, taking off
Canton and Honk-Hong airfields, making a complete disorganisation among chinese soldiers.
At evening, Wuchow falls in our hands. Canton is now well protected.

During this time, the Lae's invasion is launched. A CA and BB fleet, covered by the KB, is sailing toward Port Moresby which must be neutralized.

FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

China, 1942 january 21-23

After the capture of Wuchow, bombardment aviation starts again raids on Changcha.

The 21, our plane are taking of Amoy, on east coast of China. There is no opposition.
As i already said, the only opposition which could occur would come from a LRCAP from Kweilin.
The Changcha's airfield are too damaged.

The 23, our aviation, redeployed at Nankin is sent against Changcha and this time, there is an interception.
The dogfights are taking place at 8000 feet, 12 jap fighters and 3 bombers are lost.
But our Oscar, with their great manuever, shot down 16 planes and 4 Tomahawk from AVG.

Image
(in purple: the offensive through Yellow river is launched. Our troops have already walked about 1/4 of the distance. No air bombardment for now, i want to keep the surpris. It is a race between our troops and the chinese units which are besieging Sinyang)

China, 1942 january 25

Well, dogfights are still going on above Changcha.
A other raid from Nankin is intercepted. 14 Oscar, 2 Zero and 1 Lily don't come back and 5 bombers
are shot down by Flak in spite of altitude of 8000.
But the raid is successful. First, the airfield is now closed. Second, our fighters killed 17 Buffalo I,
12 Brewster 339D, 7 P-40B Tomahawk, 3 CW-21B Demon et 2 P-35B so 41 enemy fighters.
These fighters are not coming from Kweilin as i first thought but directly from Chungking, 5 hexes away.

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 26

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something strange i discovered is that the number of enemy planes killed is largely greater than the number seen in the combat animation or in the combat report.

Perhaps the number of enemy fighters seen in the combat animation is the number really present at the beginning of the dogfight but as the fight goes on, more enemy fighters (coming from Chungking)
are involved in: it is only a supposition.

So, LRCAP are more efficient as it first seems to me, even at a 5 hexes distance.

Now, with all those dogfights usually taking place in China's sky, it is not easy to follow.
I am actually producing 123 Zero and 128 Oscar per month.
I can replace my losses but it is just especially for Oscar as they have to replace Nate groups too.
I have a factory of 119 Nate per month but i stopped it.
In term of performance, the 2 fighters are nearly equivalent (except that the Oscar has slighly better weapons).
But the fact is the Oscar has a better range which is really useful here.
An other reason not to touch to the Nate's factory: in october 42, Nate and Oscar factories will both upgrade in Ki-43-IIb Hayabusa, which will probably be the best jap fighter at this date, especially because of its incredible manuever (37).
And it is the first jap fighter with an armor (even if it rests very fragile with a small DUR = 24).

About pilots, i don't any trouble at this date. I receive 75 pilots per month, it is enough for now but not for the long time. I am planning big training in Philippines.

FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

South Pacific, end of january 1942

Since the capture of Lae and the unsuccessful A-24 Dauntless raid, no other enemy reaction.
Other objectives has been chosen to be captured now, the KB been here in that moment.

Image
(in red: we will take profit of the presence of the KB in this sector to catch Milne Bay and Shortlands
in orange: KB and bombardment fleet)

Amboina's invasion

After the return of CVE and CVL at Palau, the Amboina's operation (rich in oil) can start.

Image
(in red: 3 Daitai of Ki-21 Sally are used to close Kendari's airfield
in yellow: invasion fleet
in purple: naval protection
in orange: aeronaval protection
in red: naval bombardment raid
in green: no enemy naval units detected from some weeks)

Singapore's sector

Just before the invasion of Palembang, we decide to catch the small air base of Jambi, at the west.
The 27, a small para operation is launched but failed because of undetected allied ground unit at Jambi.
The operation is launched again the following day but this time, this is a big one.
During all day, 150 transport planes are used to paradrop one reg and one bn on Jambi.
The attack is supported by air strike of 120 dive bombers coming from Singapore.

And this is the success. Dutch troops are pulled out Jambi.
For the japanese, this is the first time they success in such an operation.

Image
(on yellow: Jambi's operation: it is a success
in red: the rally of the transport fleet at Singapore is over
in orange: minesweepers)

A couple of days before, a successful naval bombardment on Palembang allows us to discover a mine field.
1 DD hits but safely managed to reach home at Singapore.
So, we decided to send 2 MSW to clear the waters here, as there is nearly no risk of enemy plane interception.
All enemy airfield around are too badly damaged.

Thailand

The 21th et 33th division of 15th Japanese Army just unloaded at Bangkok after about a 15 days trip from Shanghai.
Their order of march is the following: direction Rahaeng, and Moulmein and Rangoon.
The invasion of Burma is launched.

China

What is stressful with Emek is that he is completely unpredictable.

The reaction of the Allied fighter groups in China are interesting:

the 25 (in the previous post), jap raid on Changcha intercepted by enemy fighters coming from Chungking,
the 26, nothing above Changcha and plenty of fighters above Chungking (just in case i would have the idea to strike Chungking empty previouly)
the 27, about 100 allied fighters above Changcha but this time they are coming from Hengchow (just in case i would have the strange idea to strike Changcha empty previously)
the 28, all enemy fighters in CAP above Hengchow (just in case i would have the bad idea to strike Hengchow empty previously)
...

and what did i do during this time ... nothing ... i just watch. [:'(]

3 days without any jap raid on China, it is unexpected for the Allies
because this is the only way i found to counter Emek: being as unpredictable as he is. Image

However, there are the war requirements and in China, i want to close Changcha, Hengchow, Kweilin and
Liuchow airfields. That's because those airfields could be dangerous later if Emek uses them with 4E bombers
and try to strike naval traffic between Philippines and China.

So, the 29, an other raid is planned on Changcha from Amoy.
This raid may be helped by a sweep from Nangchang.

Image
(in dark purple: our troops should cross the river during the 29
in red: raid for the 29
in light blue: chinese airfield to close)

And finally, as we are speaking, our courageous troops in China are ready to cross the Yellow river
in the south of Kaifeng, in the back of the Chinese army which besiege Sinyang.
For now, we didn't notice any enemy retreat. [:D]

FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

China, 1942 january 29

The military situation is still difficult in this area.
Our troops just crossed over the Yellow river but Chinese troops managed to hold in spite of a rather
good ratio for us.
We are going now to bombard during some days before an other attempt but the surprise effect is lost.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 50,32

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 157623 troops, 838 guns, 87 vehicles, Assault Value = 3591

Defending force 33073 troops, 137 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 910

Japanese max assault: 3600 - adjusted assault: 1236

Allied max defense: 921 - adjusted defense: 654

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
4663 casualties reported
Guns lost 29
Vehicles lost 6
[:@]

Allied ground losses:
1331 casualties reported
Guns lost 17

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The same day, the Chinese launch a rude attack on Sinyang. They suffer heavy losses but managed to catch
one of our fortification.
Without being critical, the situation is serious and local commander is asking for reinforcements.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Sinyang

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 131516 troops, 798 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3958

Defending force 60203 troops, 206 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1443

Allied max assault: 7916 - adjusted assault: 2730

Japanese max defense: 1514 - adjusted defense: 2285

Allied assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 4)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 3

Japanese ground losses:
1442 casualties reported
Guns lost 24

Allied ground losses:
6200 casualties reported
Guns lost 192
[:D]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, we decide to send by transport planes some parts of the 70th division. This division is still in reorganisation
at Port Arthur but we have no choice. An other small bn is send by air from Hainan too. We must hold Sinyang.

The day before, clouds on our airbases Amoy and Nangchang stopped any raid on Changcha.
Today, our planes are sent to Nankin, Hankow and Kaifeng. They will help Sinyang's garrison.

With fighters, we plan a sweep on Hengchow which still have a lot of enemy fighters in CAP.

Image
(in yellow: many enemy bombers at Chungking; nearly all our airfields in China are threatened
in red: rude chinese offensive: our troops are holding
in red: our troops crossed the river but the chinese are holding too
in purple: air transport of the 70th div; it is very disorganised
in red: planned raids to support Sinyang's defenses
in red: sweep [:D]
in purple: air transport of a bn)

Oooohhhh, our reco tells us that many bombers arrived at Chungking. That's new!!!

We decided so to send 2 Nate's Sentai from Singapour to help in China. They are arriving at Canton.

Second, in case of positive answer to the first question, may an AAR in french language interest someone here or a french AAR will never be read here?

In fact, i began to post my AAR in english here but i stopped because it was taking me to much time to translate.[:(]

It has been said that posts are supposed to be made in English... in the past, some moderators have gotten on folk's cases for posting in foreign languages. It MIGHT not happen here given the inactivity of the forum, but then again, it might.

If it would be me only to decide : it would be ok...i think there are 4 or 5 french readers on the forums of Witp or AE, so you could have readers.
Now, if a Mod would ask to stop, i would find this sad, although it could be understand....but still, there are others vehicules for the information than the sole english language. Anyway, you would have one reader at least [:D]

I don't think a single AAR in French hidden in the Witp classic forum would be enough to raise a threat of a new French and indian War[:D]
