A JAAF attack on Indian Army 6th Brigade (reinforced by 22 Battery Indian Artillery) caused 98 casualties and 1 gun lost at Kota Bahru.

A JAAF attack on the British Army 2nd Burma Brigade near Moulmein caused 11 casualties.

3 Ki-48s (and 14 Ki-27s) put a small bomb into AP Van Diemen in the Visayas. Later they put a bomb into a small tanker named Mia Hsia - one of the very few tiny ships represented individually in RHS. Later still they missed AK Yochow.

18 Bettys and 10 Ju-88s made an ill advised unescorted raid on a minor ship at Rangoon. They ran into 12 AVG P-40s and a total of 8 bombers were destroyed by them. They did manage to sink the small AK Magwe they had gone in after (with 2 small bombs) however. Tired by now, 2 more missed an AP after that.

4 Nells out of Cagayan sank AP Legaspi with two torpedoes. A proper element of 3 Zeros escorted them. Later 9 Nells from the same place put a torpedo each into AP Basilan and PG Tulsa at Jolo. 29 casualties reported. Later still 7 Nells put 2 fish into AK Capillo, probably sinking her: 67 casualties and 1 gun lost reported.

10 Kates and 4 Me-109s (from the CVE force) put two torpedoes into TK Gertrude Kellog in the same area.
Then 14 more Kates and 6 Me's put 5 large 250 kg bombs into AK Governor Wood. She was loaded and 128 casualties,
2 guns and 5 vehicles were lost. Later the same combination did someting to AK Segoland - 3 hits this time - and 78 casualties.
6 Me-109s missed an MSW unit. 4 more missed an AP. Then 9 Kates sank AK Dos Hermanos with 3 torpedoes.

8 Nells (and 24 Zeros) out of Takao torpedoed AK Maayo at very long range in the same area.

Troops began landing at Davao. CD guns fired 63 shots scoring 7 hits on 4 DM - none serious.

35 000 Japanese troops attacked a Field Army with only 5000 troops on the rail line West from Shanghai - achieved 71:1 odds - and the Field Army retreated - 148 Japanese casualties to 126 Allies - 2 Japanese and 8 Allied guns lost.

40 000 Japanese troops attacked 14 000 Allies at HK - failed to achieve 1:1 odds - and took 606 to 300 casualties (losing 22 guns and 1 vehicle vs 6 guns and 3 vehicles for the Allies). I noticed no HQ is in the hex - so the troops are not properly supported. Will correct and retry in two days. Previous attacks had reduced the fortification level to 3.

7500 Japanese troops conducted a shock attack on the Hopei Militia Regiment - which was in bad shape after days of multiple air strikes and ground combat. It surrendered - 26 Japanese to 1131 Allied casualties - 1 Japanese to 9 Allied guns lost.

24 000 Japanese troops (a division) attacked 14 000 Allies at Alor Star - a brigade plus a support unit plus static supply sink unit - achieved 4:1 odds - and captured it on the first assault. The supply sink cannot have delayed the outcome: you cannot take less than one battle to take a place. 124 casualties and 6 guns lost vs 13,588 casualties, 4 guns and 1578 vehicles lost by the Allies. The mobile brigade and the air support unit retreated down the rail line.

An Allied bombardment attack at Davao was ineffective.

Undefended Khorat Thailand fell to shock attack by over 10 000 Japanese troops. This adds some resources and supplies - and it is a rail connection to still others.

13 December 1941 (Hawaii Time) 14 December (Tokyo/Manila Time)

The night turn began with continuing landings at Mindinao. Mines and 8 CD shots defended the position. No hits. Later 24 more shots were fired - but still no hits.

USS Trout was attacked by 5 ships in an AS attack well West of Johnston Island.

Allied DMS detected a minefield at Muntok, Banka Island.

4 ASW units missed I-156 at Amboina. This unsuccessful AS attack was repeated by 3 DMS.

A PC detected a minefield at Singapore.

Ro-44 torpedoed AP Princess of Negros at Manado.

161 CD shots were fired at Molokai vs landing ships: 22 hits on 3 ships and 1 ship missed entirely. AP Koan Maru on fire with heavy damage.

I-153 torpedoed AK Churruca South of Singapore.

The day turn began when 21 Ki-43s out of Pisanoluke swept Rangoon. They met 14 AVG P-40s and destroyed 2 before the Allies bugged out.

Next 44 Zeros out of Soc Trang swept Singapore. Meeting 20 Buffalos, they shot 8 down.

Then the Allies mounted out a major air strike on Lahaina with 54 bombers of 3 types (16 B-17s, 16 A-20s, 22 B-18s), escorted by 20 P0-49s and 5 P-36s. They met 55 Me-109s (both JAAF land based and JNAF from the CVL force) and 4 Petes on CAP. 2 Petes and 2 Me's were lost. 16 Allied fighters and 10 bombers were destroyed, mainly by the CAP. ML Syoka Maru took one bomb hit, but her mine cargo went up, and she was a constructive total loss, and had to be scuttled. AO Ken'yo Maru also was hit, and her cargo also cought fire. 10 airbase related hits.

31 Ki-51s attacked the 50th Guerilla Regiment on the Indochina border causing 61 casualties. 20 JAAF light bombers attacked the Red 15th Guerilla Regiment in North China, causing 43 casualties and 1 gun lost. 16 more caused 8 casualties to the 52nd Guerilla Regiment in the same area.

3 ROCAF B-10s raided Anking - without effect.

6 Ki-48s and 21 Me's out of Lahaina raided PH. Meeting 5 Wildcats, 15 P-40s and 2 Ki-36 on CAP, they shot down 6 fighters and put 2 bombs into AK Haeakala, causing heavy damage.

13 Nells out of Saigon raided Singapore - unescorted. Meeting 12 Buffalos, they all penetrated. They put 2 torpedoes each into two AKs, and one more into a PC unit. One was lost to AA fire from this latter.

4 Ki-21s escorted by 10 fighters of 2 types (based at Pisanalouke) put 4 bombs into a barge group at Hinzada, Burma, causing heavy damage.

KB = North of Hawaii - sent 21 Vals and 21 Kates (escorted by 68 Zeros) after a TF with 2 APs - putting 4 torpedoes and 10 bombs into them, sinnking both. Later it sent 11 Vals and 17 Kates at AK Alchiba, scoring 7 bomb and 2 torpedo hits - at which point and the rest of the planes could no longer find her. After that 21 Vals and 10 Kates went after AO Ramapo - scoring 20 bombs and 3 torpedoes before she too sank and could no longer be found. Then 9 Vals and 18 Kates put 2 bombs and 5 torpedoes into AR Pyro - with the same outcome. Most of these ships were running NW from Oahu - otherwise due North. KB is headed NW - and will meet up with a surface group and an invasion group at Midway some days in the future.

San Butai (Three Force or SB) sent 16 Me-109s with 250 kg bombs after AK Sagoland at Menado - and scored a hit which set her on fire and causing 16 casualties on board. This must have been a non cohesive strike, because 10 Kates from the same carriers followed up - and put a torpedo into the same ship - causing 24 more casualties. 14 more Kates from the same force (but different carriers) put 2 bombs into AK Bisayas SE of Minado - causing 28 casualties on board. Another 14 put 4 bombs into the same ship - causing a further 37 casualties and 2 vehicles lost.

3 Ki-38s and 3 Ju-88s (both from tiny recon detachments at Legaspi) put 2 bombs into AP Van Dieman at sea in the Visayas. One was a 50 kg bomb and the other a 250 kg bomb - both from Ju-88s - since Ki-48s carry clusters of 3 tiny 15 kg bombs (= 100 pounds).

USS Tautog, a submarine dogging a major loaded troop convoy due West of Johnston, was attacked ineffectively by the convoy escorts. This - and a similar attack during the previous night - may have kept her head down - and be the reason she never got off a shot. If so - that is how ASW is supposed to work.

Just less than 18 000 Japanese troops attacked just over 16 000 Allies at Kota Bahru. They achieved 6:1 odds on the first assault on this location, capturing it, causing 88 Japanese and 6689 Allied casualties, 1 Japanese and 976 Allied vehicles lost. This is a supply sink location and it fell on the first attack by a single division: the supply sink can not have delayed its fall - nor caused many casualties - the same result as at Alor Star. These not very large sinks appear to be no problem whatever to a moderate sized force. Part of the division assigned had not even reached the hex yet. But there is one advantage for the Japanese over history: I came in overland - substantially cohesive - rather than landing over the beach - avoided losses to the beach defenses. The troops had landed at Singora - a Thai port.

ROC troops had invested Nanchang - a significant air base but also a salient. 69 000 Japanese troops attacked the 13 000 Allies, achieved 6:1 odds, and drove them from the city on the first attack. 656 Japanese casualties and 34 guns lost. 753 Allied casualties and 24 guns lost.

A brigade with over 5000 men attacked a guerilla regiment with only 425 (weakened by air strikes) in North China. 151 to 1 odds were achieved - but the unit retreated rather than surrender - and it suffered 198 casualties and 1 gun lost. 2 Japanese casualties. Then a whole division with over 26 000 men attacked a Red guerilla regiment in rather better shape - Red units generate more supplies and tend to be closer to full strength when engaged (703 troops and 8 guns). "Only" 72 : 1 odds were achieved, and this unit also retreated, suffering 115 casualties and 6 guns lost - 13 Japanese casualties and 2 guns lost.

A brigade with almost 6800 attacked a division at Davao - this Philippine Army "division" had just over 3500 men - achieved 1:1 odds - and reduced fortifications to zero. 632 Japanese casualties and 31 guns lost to 65 casualties and 2 guns lost for the Filipinos. Two SNLFs are landing and will joint the assault tomorrow. The brigade was not demoralized.

Allied bombardment attacks at Davao and Molokai were not effective. Elements of a demi-brigade formation of the Imperial Guards landed at Molokai - but some were lost to combat and some didn't sail from Lahaina - and so I did not order the unit to attack tomorrow. Instead, the transports and escorts will return to Lahaina, load up the other demi brigade - and land it instead. The rest of this demi brigade will unload at Lahaina and become its ground security element. Elements of a division which have been landing at Johnston from large ships are embarking on smaller ships to come in to reinforce Lahaina in a few days. One division has reached Johnston and two more are en route - each on separate major transport convoys.

Post by el cid again »

14 Dec 41 (Hawaii time) 15 Dec (Tokyo/Manila time)

The night turn began with continuing landings at Davao - opposed by mines and CD guns - but not effectively opposed.

Similar continuing landings at San Fernando were also opposed by mines - but in spite of the presence of MSW units - AK Hiyama Maru got hit.
25 troops, 2 guns and 1 vehicle lost.

Ro-36 missed a TK at Kendari.

I-155 was missed by 2 USN DD in an ASW attack in the Visayas. This was repeated at the end of the night.

Ro-28 missed an AK South of Singapore.

BB West Virginia led CA New Orleans, 7 DD/DM and 1 PC unit into Lahaina. They met the Ni Butai (Two Force, CVL Force) including BC Amagik, 3 CA, 8 DD and 5 CVLs. Amagi took 4 hits and DD Tokitsukaze one more - but it was badly hurt and on fire. West Virgina took 24 hits and 1 torpedo - DD Chew 36 hits and a torpedo (sinking her) - DD Bagley 5 hits and on fire - DM Sicard 2 hits and on fire - CA New Orleans 3 hits - DD Dale 2 hits and on fire - DD Allen 1 hit and on fire. Many of these ships seem to have entered the fight already burning - he is fighting with damaged units. The CVL force ran from the hex.

Next BB California led CA San Francisco, CL St Louis and 6 DD/DM into the same port - and encountered the transport force (offloading supplies at the still damaged port). CL Tama took 12 hits and was set afire, DD Kisaragi took 7 hits and was set afire, end of list (not impressive IMHO). CA San Francisco was sunk by 3 torpedoes (5 shell hits didn't help any), St Louis took 7 hits, DD Monaghan took 3 and was set afire, DD Shaw 1 more hit. But the force ran to sea - and this mattered later in the day - when it was hit by bombers without having air cover.

Not content to run in two different surface action groups, he also formed another around CA Minneapolis and CL Helena - 7 DD/DM/DMS escorting. These ran into the small transport that had landed troops on Molokai - CL Jintsu, 2 DE, 4 AP and 3 LCVP groups. The CL took 23 hits and was badly damaged. DE Kiji took 4 shell hits and 2 AP each took 2 more - one of those on fire. DMS Trevor was torpedoed and hit by 8 shells - and is in a bad way (probably will sink) - CL Helena took 9 hits and was on fire - CA Minneapolis and DD Chandler also took one hit each. Once again, the Japanese force ran to sea and was uncovered the following day.

Post by el cid again »

The day turn began with TK Sierstad hitting a mine at Merak/Serang (Java) = the Sunda Strait.

Six MSW units cleared mines at Toboali (Banka)

AK Mitang took 3 shells and a torpedo at Singapore - and sank immediately.

42 Ki-21s attacked Rangoon with 36 Ki-43s, 12 Claudes, and 2 recon Ki-46s. They met 6 Buffalos - and 28 AVG P-40s. 4 Claudes, 1 Ki-43,
2 Ki-21, and 1 Ki-46 lost - all but one Ki-21 to fighters. 3 Buffalos and 11 P-40s shot down. 1 Blenheim NF destroyed on the ground. 53 airbase related hits.

28 Kates, 26 Ki-51s, 3 Ki-48 recon planes, and 21 Ki-43s attacked Kuala Lumpur airfields. 42 casualties, 4 vehicles lost, 42 other hits. 2 attacking bombers were damaged by AA fire.

43 Zeros swept Singapore (with a Ki-49 recon plane) - they met 13 Buffalos on CAP and shot down 8 of them.

2 ROCAF attacks by 3 SB-2s each near the Indochina border were ineffective. 2 B-10s missed an AK on the Yangtze near Nanchang. They repeated this non event later in the day.

A JAAF attack on the 9th (later 99th) Field Army caused 67 casualties and 1 gun lost - but a Ki-51 was destroyed by HMG fire.

50 JAAF bombers of two types hit the Indian Army 6th Brigade (reinforced) in Malaya - causing 41 casualties and 1 gun lost.

8 Ki-51s and 6 Claudes out of Aparri caused 9 casualties to the Philippine Army 2nd Battalion of the 12th Regiment at Vigan.
Then 25 Ki-48s out of Takao Formosa caused 58 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.

10 Ju-88s and 23 Ki-43s (with a Ki-46 in company) caused 15 casualties to the RAF No 2 Forward Air Station on the Thai border of Burma.
This unit is probably badly understrength. 20 P-40s - out of Rangoon - tried to attack a brigade of the Japanese 56th Division Brigade in the same hex - but failed to be effective in the jungle terrain.

35 B-17s of 2 types, 7 A-20s and 3 SBDs - escorted by 7 P-40s - out of Oahu - hit the smaller transport force at sea East of Lahaina. They scored 3 bomb hits - 1 each on 3 ships - CL Tama, AK Tamon Maru and AK Hinko Maru - the first two on fire (but maybe not from the bomb).
This force had been hurt in night surface battle and driven to sea from Lahaina to avoid more.

3 A-20s missed CL Mikuma (in her 15 six inch gun form) in the CVL force which was NE of Kona.
2 B-17s missed CL Jintsu in the same area.

5 Ki-48s out of Legaspi put a bomb into AK Yochow at Manila. 1 was shot down by 16 P-40s on CAP there. 3 more put a bomb into AK Dumaguete in the Visayas.

10 Kates put two torpedoes into already damaged AK Bisayas North of Ambon Island, dooming her.

I-5 put two fish into AP US Grant - caused 53 casualties and 2 guns lost - but was missed by 2 DD in counterattacks.

Yet another (the fourth different) surface action group ran in on Lahaina. BB Maryland and BB Pennsylvania, with CL Honolulu and 8 DD/DM/DMS/AVD - ran into the only force left - the CVL force. This time they managed to beat up BC Amagi badly - with 4 shell hits - 2 of them 16 inch from Maryland - and damaged Tokitsukaze took yet another hit. 6 Allied ships shared 10 shell hits - 5 of those classified as heavy damage - but probably they all began the action in that state. They entered the display with smoke plumes. The CVL force then also fled the Lahaina hex - but not to the hex where the transports went.

Ground combat at Davao - the second round - achieved only 1:1 odds and failed to take the hex. There is no supply sink here - it is just troop on troop. It IS bad terrain. 333 Japanese casualties and 14 guns lost to 29 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost. 9529 attackers to 3452 defenders - this is a very weak Philippine division. Allied bombardment was ineffective.

35 000 Japanese in 2 divisions attacked 15 000 Chinese in a Field Army (also = 2 divisions) on the RR West from Shanghai. 3:1 odds, the Allies retreated. 1214 Japanese casualties and 38 guns lost to only 162 casualties and 11 guns lost for the Allies.

5500 Japanese troops attacked the 256 survivors of a Chinese gurilla regiment - and it retreated with 22 casualties.

4600 Japanese (a third of a division) attacked 1094 Filipinos (a battalion) at Vigan - and it retreated North to Luoag. 136 Japanese casualties and 11 guns lost to only 9 Allied casualties.

Allied bombardment on Molokai was ineffective.

The American offensive on Lahaina drove all ships from the hex. The hex has ample supplies and strong air power - which was reinforced. USN ships are mostly running East - so Ni Butai will go after them. KB will try to cut them off later - going on a triangle course. Other ships need to reach port to control fires and damage.

Meanwhile back at the ranch Kona fell to nothing but the adjacent hex force - isolating an SNLF on the island. But this unit reached Hilo today - and will attack it tomorrow. We must delay follow up landings on Molokai for now - but at least it is now not generating any supplies for the units there - and if he keeps bombarding - he is eating his limited stocks faster. He still has fighters there - and they are eating his supplies too.

In the first week of the war manpower centers increased from 836 to 837 - but manpower points fell from 100,000 to 71,952 - indicating we cannot sustain the rate of using manpower points very long - only two more weeks at this pace and 1 more week at 1/3 this pace - and then we are limited to about 3 per cent of this pace.

Aircraft engines rose from 886 to 1019 capacity (actual production is always less than capacity)
Aircraft airframe production rose from 406 to 540

Vehicle production rate rose from 100 to 144 - but vehicle inventories fell from 2000 to only 30

Armament production capacity rose from 783 to 814 - but armament inventories fell from 20,000 to nil

Naval shipyard capacity rose from 1320 to 1366 - and naval points from 200 to 2117 - meaning we can turn on more warships.

Merchant shipyard capacity rose from 1669 to 1841 - but merchant points fell to nil from 100 - meaning we must turn off still more merchant ships.

Ship repair points rose from 1465 to 1510 points - but most damaged ships are not yet in shipyards to use them. The current rate of damage to ships is greater than this capacity can fix in a timely way. But he should slow down in his rate of attacking in the next day or two.

Oil centers rose dramatically from 1294 to 2066 - mostly due to the capture of Brunei - but oil stocks fell.
So did fuel and supply stocks - the present pace cannot be maintained on logistic grounds unless we get more production. In fact we need to build stocks - not deplete them - for later war operations. So the oil situation remains critically below requirements.

HI increased from 13618 to 13749 capacity - but HI inventories fell from 20,000 to only 46 points - again meaning we cannot sustain the present pace.

Resource centers increased from 20283 to 20285 - but resource inventories fell - indicating we need to capture more. We need to build stocks - not deplete them - against the day enemy bombers damage centers - and enemy subs cut off imports.

15 Dec (Hawaii) 16 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with bad luck: Ro-30 hit a Japanese sub laid Type 88 mine at Muntok, Banka Island, NEI

3 IJN MSW units cleared USN sub laid mines at Vigan/Benguid

Japanese landing craft - which failed to go to Molokai on Time - and spent two days at sea amid naval battles -
landed remnants of a demi brigade of the Imperial Guards at Hilo. DE Kiji took 2 hits from teh 22 shells fired in defense.

USN sub S-38 missed an AK in the South China Sea. Later in the night she missed a second AK in the same hex.

AK Toyo Maru hit a USN sub laid mine at Cagayan. He seems to have learned to use subs to lay mines.

The day turn began with 12 Ki-48s, unescorted, out of Peking, attacked the airfield at Honan, Northern China, causing 2 hits - in spite of meeting 7 biplane I-153 fighters.

21 Ki-21s out of Pisanoluke Thailand - escorted by 32 Ki-43s and 9 Claudes - along with 2 Ki-46 recon planes - raided Rangoon. They met 4 Buffalos and 5 AVG P-40Bs. All the Buffalos were destroyed, as was 1 P-40, and 2 Blenheim IF night fighters on the ground. 55 other hits.

6 Ki-48s out of Lahaina attacked the USAAF 118th Base Force at Hilo causing 10 casualties.

62 Ki-48s, 34 Ki-30s, 26 Ki-51s and 27 Ki-27s attacked the ROC Hopei 49th Field Army causing 317 casualties and 5 guns lost.

24 Ki-51s and 27 Army Kates (Ki-47s) attacked the Penang Fortress unit - causing 88 casualties. 4 Wirraways were on CAP but achieved nothing.

3 Ju-88s caused 13 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine Scouts Regiment at Naga.

9 other Ju-88s out of Bangkok failed to damage the remnants of the RAF 2md Forward Air Station at Three Pagoda's Pass in the Jungle of the Burma/Thai border.

25 B-17s of 2 types, 2 SBDs, 7 B-20 Bostons and 10 B-18s escorted by 9 P-36 and 14 P-40Bs out of PH attacked ships at Hilo (the main concentration at this time). 20 Me-109s were on LRCAP out of Lahaina. 2 of these were lost. 9 Allied fighters and 5 bombers were shot down. 3 hits on CL Tama, 6 hits on DE Kiji (which later sank), 2 hits on AP Fukko Maru - many of these 1000 pound bombs. 2 B-18s straggled, came in late, and 1 was lost to LRCAP, while the other missed CL Mikuma (in 6 inch gun format). 3 more missed an AP. Then 3 B-17Es came in and put another thousand pound bomb into CL Jintsu - although 2 were lost in the effort. 3 more missed an AO.

3 B-17s out of PH put a bomb into BC Amagi - which for some reason had gone to Lahaina. 4 more missed an AP at sea.

4 Ki-48s put 8 small bombs into AK Kochow at the the entrance to Manila Bay.

9 Ki-21s put 5 bombs into 2 DD/DMS at Manila - losing 1 of their number to 17 fighters of 3 types on CAP. 3 more put another bomb into DD Allen at sea.

3 Ki-49s out of Lahaina attacked CA New Orleans far South of Hawaii - putting a bomb into her - but she shot one of them down. 3 more failed to hit BB California East of Hawaii. 2 more missed DM Sicard in the same area. 5 more, joined by 8 Ki-21s, put a 50 kg bomb into BB Maryland, apparently retiring to the USA.

23 Kates from the CL force put a bomb into DD Monaghan far East of Hawaii. 30 more put 6 torpedoes into damaged CL Helena - which sank.

2 Jakes missed an AK in the South China Sea

38 Zeros escorted a recon plane to Singapore - met 9 Buffalos - and shot 3 down. The Buffalos did shoot down a Zero (they got first blood) and damaged the recon plane.

4 B-17s raided Hilo, missing an AK. They came in with 13 fighters of 2 types, met 22 Me-109s on CAp - and shot 1 down. 7 Allied fighters were lost in this raid.

1 Ki-49 (they are not yet accepted for operations - these are preproduction machines - and no doubt they will be withdrawn after this one day of operations) missed a DMS at PH - evading 13 fighters of 3 types on CAP. 4 Ki-48s made a similar raid - evaded 20 P-40s at Manila - put a bomb into AK Antonio.

12 Claudes out of Aparri put 8 shells into a PT unit in Southern Luzon (strafing). In EOS - Claudes mount 20 mm guns instead of 7.7 mm MMG - this having been done originally to show the guns were useful - and they got put on Zeros as a result.

4 Ki-21s out of Legaspi put a bomb into AP Basilan in the Visayas. 4 more - out of Lahaina Hawaii - put a bomb into BB California. Then the first 4 put 4 bombs into a MSW unit at Manila - also damaging one of the 20 P-40s on CAP there.

I-155 put 2 fish into AD Black Hawk at Darwin. 2 DD counterattacked her - but missed.

I-21 torpedoed AK Barwon one hex out of PM. PG Swan counterattacked her but missed. Later I-21 put 2 fish into the same ship,
sinking her.

USN S-38 missed an AK at Cagayan.

3 CL and 4 DD bombarded Hilo: 64 casualties, 3 guns lost, 9 other hits.

USN Argonaut torpedoed DE Ootori near Hawaii

USN Shark missed an AK in the South China Sea

I-121 put a shell into AK Tobelo in the same area

Japanese ground combat at Davao achieved 1;1 odds and failed to capture the city. 9607 Japanese in 3 units attacked 3352 men in a Filipino division without a supply sink or any other support. 233 Japanese casualties and 4 guns lost to 24 Filipinos and 1 gun lost. This fight isn't going well - and it isn't because of supply sinks - or even numbers or quality. It may be due to the horrible terrain.

2981 Japanese attacked 1986 Americans at Hilo. In spite of air and naval support, only 2:1 odds were achieved, and the position held. This is a disaster - Japanese ships need to enter port to control fires and flooding. 18 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost to 22 American casualties and 1 gun lost.

5538 Japanese attacked 7551 Chinese on the road East of Ningpo. 18 Japanese to 16 Chinese casualties, plus 1 Chinese gun lost.

Almost 40,000 Japanese attacked less than 14,000 Allies at HK - achieved 0:1 odds (Fort Level 3) - 361 Japanese casualties, 23 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost to 214 Allied casualties, 3 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost.

A Japanese division took Naga from the Philippine Scouts Cavalry Regiment. This is the main drive on Manila - and another division is already ashore - but we only sent one forward to conceal this. 6:1 odds - 156 Japanese casualties and 3 guns lost to 45 casualties and 2 guns lost.

Ilagan Luzon was captured, undefended.

24 000 Japanese attacked over 27 000 at Georgetown. In spite of the presence of a supply sink, it fell on the first assault. 24 Japanese casualties, 17168 Allied casualties, 8 guns and 2055 vehicles lost.

Undefended Ye Burma fell to airborne assault - isolating the RAF 2nd Forward Air Station on the trail from Thailand. It retreated from Tavoy by one route and is now retreating back to Burma via another. It probably has little remaining strength.

1100 Japanese failed to capture Nauru on the first assault. 40 casualties and 5 vehicles lost for the Allies. This unusual location is defended only by a supply sink - so all casualties are civilians.

3000 troops attacked almost 2000 at Hilo - achieved 4:1 odds and captured it. The defenders retreated to Kona OVER Muna Loa!!! 3 Japanese casualties, 2 US casualties.

Reconnaissance says there are no units defending Moulmein. Except for the forward air station at Tavoy we have encountered no ground resistence - and that station still lives - of all things at Three Pagoda's Pass - blocking an invasion route (although it is very weak and has been losing every action).

It is a mistake not to defend forward in Burma - and in particular not to defend Moulmein. Tavoy and Moulmein are significant air bases with local resources. Moulmein is also on the rail net. Lightly defended these become points the enemy can capture undamaged and immediately turn into points supporting operations even without being able to send ships around Malaya - which must wait weeks for Singapore to fall.
A stronger position in Burma means the day the Burma Road is cut comes sooner - and that hurts China. It also means that the day Japan can contemplate invading India with good air base and significant local supply comes much sooner. Sooner is bad because India needs time to gain reinforcements and build defenses.

The defense in Malaya in this game is somewhat better - he makes me fight for every town - and recon shows he is building a massive defense in the middle of the Penninsula - one which experience shows can halt a strong drive at least a week. When locations fall - they often fall with damage - providing the enemy with fewer local resources.

These colonial areas were rich - which is why they were colonized - and with the help of Forum members we did a good deal to develop their local infrastructures and economies. Letting the bases, resources, industry etc fall cheap and early only compounds the problem of the centrafugal offensive from the Allied point of view. Units "saved" by running come at the expense of units lost in other places - e.g. China or India or Australia.

Problem is el cid, if you dnt mind me posting here, is the lack of units to garrison all the extra bases. If i want to cover all Burma bases then i risk leaving Rangoon and Mandalay denuded of defenders. If i weaken the imphal-ledo line by bringing units forward i weaken india. Its a catch 22, the same one as in RL i suppose

Turns out - as you will see - recon was wrong - and he did properly garrison Moulmein - and also will delay the offensive by one to three weeks.

It is ALWAYS important to delay - it is also often wise to damage large locations - if you are able to afford to leave a unit with engineers to do it.

Mandalay should be garrisoned as well - and used as a fall back position.

17 Dec 1941 (Hawaii Time) 18 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn begn with a PT boat raid in Lahaina. Getting into the main transport force, they sank a DE with 2 hits,
although one unit was damaged in the process. This is exactly what PT boats are for - although curiously they would not work in Hawaiian waters - the wave spacing being wrong for the hull size - and the deployment was a failure IRL. Immediately afterward the two units tangled with a newly arrived surface action group - and one was sunk - the other nearly so.

TF 6 landed troops at Tulagi - and detected mines - but didn't hit any.

Allied subchasers detected mines at Muntok, Banka Island - but didn't hit any.

Ro-26 torpedoed AK Tobelo near Singapore

The day turn began with 11 Zeros sweeping Singapore - but there was no CAP. We will bomb Singapore tomorrow - focused on ships in port - there are about 10 - probably damaged.

7 Ki-48s out of Lahaina - unescorted - hit airfields at Oahu. 10 casualties and 4 hits. 1 bomber lost to 5 fighters of 2 types on CAP.

4 ROCAF SB-2s failed to damage the Ikegai SNLF in Southern China.
3 more failed to harm the 3rd Mountain Gun Regiment in the same area.

A JAAF raid on the Kwangtung 65th Field Army caused 72 casualties and 2 guns lost. Another on the Hopei 49th Field Army caused 166 casualties and 2 guns lost.

1 Ki-51 was lost attacking HK - but the raid did no damage.

9 Bettys raided Nauru Island and caused 5 casualties to the civilian supply sink unit there. The air unit became demoralized (by lack of targets???)

34 bombers of 4 types - escorted by 8 P-40s - raided Lahaina. They failed to damage any of the 8 ships attacked. 13 Me-109s and 2 Petes were on CAP. 1 Pete and 2 Me-109s lost in air combat. 2 Allied fighthers and 7 bombers were destroyed. 3 A-20 stragglers showed up immediately thereafter - 1 was lost. 2 B-18 stragglers came next - but they did better. They penetrated to make a failed run on CL Mikuma (15 gun light variant) - and while 1 got damaged - it damaged an Me-109 in return. A later effort (PM) by 13 B-17s and 6 A-20s escorted by 2 P-40s did better: DE Hokaze and AP Mikage Maru #2 each took a large bomb hit - DD Mutsuki and two other transports were missed. 1 Me-109 was shot down - as were both P-40s and 1 B-17.

3 SB-2s failed to hit an AK at Hankow/Wuhan. But 3 B-10s put a bomb into Hisashima Maru immediately thereafter.

4 Ki-48s and 14 Ki-21s out of Legaspi put 14 bombs into AK Yochow - which sank later from the damage.

3 Ki-49s out of Lahaina put 2 bombs into DD Allen SE of Hawaii. 5 more failed to damage BB Pennsylvania in the same area. 2 were lost.

20 Ki-21s put 8 bombs into 2 AKs at Singapore - these at sea not in port. No bombers lost. AK Larut was badly damaged and sank later.

KB - NE of Hawaii - got off a large strike which put 7 bombs into MSW Grebe and Tern - the MSW unit sank later.

SS Skipjack missed AO Iro near Celebes. 4 IJN DD also missed her in turn - but did detect and attack her.

USN SS Cachalot torpedoed DE Ootori near Hawaii.

Ro-27 torpedoed AK Larut - badly damaged by bombs earlier in the day - sinking her.

Ground combat at Nauru Island failed to capture it from the Supply sink there. But it lost 13 casualties and the attackers were not demoralized. The outcome is certain - apparently they are just chasing the civilians around the guano pits and up the ridge (where there is a large tram system to take guano down to the port).

230 IJA paras attacked supposedly undefended Moulmein - ran into a brigade and a air support unit - took 62 casualties and retreated to YE.
