8 December 1941 Land Turn

Troops landed at Kampong Pfet Thailand: 82 Japanese casualties.

Undefended Legaspi was captured by an SNLF.

Another SNLF captured Cagayan from a small air support unit. 18 Japanese casualties, the Allied unit retreated into the jungle.

Rabaul was captured by the South Seas Detachment. 6 Anson destroyed on the ground 1276 Allied casualties, 9 guns lost, 44 vehicles lost - mainly in the static unit - Lark Force retreated. 61 Japanese casualties, 4 guns lost.

Midway was captured by most of a division after a night and a day of bloody landings. 516 more Japanese casualties, 10 guns lost. 2983 Allied casualties, 58 guns lost.

Guam was captured by 2 small naval landing parties. 2 Japanese casualties. 1151 Allied casualties, 3 guns lost, 127 vehicles lost. The supply sink was not an issue.

Undefended Naga captured, no casualties.

Undefended Kona captured, no casualties.

Ground assault at Kuantan failed, no odds, no fort level: 61 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost. 24 Allied casualties.

Philippine Army 2/12th Battalion was driven from Appari by a division and a brigade assault. 2 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 21 Allied casualties.

The Imperial Guards Brigade captured Hilo from a small composite base force unit. 19 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 2217 Allied casualties, 33 guns lost. This in spite of mountains to defend and an organic supply sink. Falling on the first assault to a partial brigade means the sink caused zero days delay.

1132 JAAF Airborne troops failed to take Tavoy from 462 Allied support troops in a forward air base support unit - for the second day in a row airborne assault failed. The Airborne brigade is 91 per cent demoralized. There was not much actual fighting: 5 Allied casualties. I rationalize this as drops were into the wrong landing zones and the troops had to march too far to be effective.

On this extraordinary day the Allies lost 110 aircraft in air combat, Japan only 9. The Allies have lost 44 ships sunk in two days - the Japanese none (but some will sink returning from landings at Midway - probably). The event of operational significance today was that Force Z wiped itself out attacking 3 supported Japanese battleships. The event of strategic significance today is that Japan secured all its Central Pacific first wave objectives: Midway, Johnston Island, Hilo, Kona (plus Lanai fell yesterday). Rabaul fell ahead of plan - as did Davao.

Not a bad day for Japan: air air losses better than 10:1 our favor - 4 ships sunk by flooding out at the end in addition to what you see here - all Allied. We are fighting for position - not material - so winning the attrition battle when being willing to pay for position is a nice combination.

commentary:

The failure to attack at Lahaina, Hilo or even Kona is difficult to understand: there is nothing whatever at Kona, the reinforced CSNLF at Hilo was up to the task (and since we all but evacuated it - would in fact have succeeded at minimal cost) - and the brigade at Lahaina was shown to be adequate in the earlier game with Shark (which this one is a restart of - due to a file issue). We didn't try to help Lahaina at all - and contested it only with the 400 mines already there plus 4 submarines. We tried to fight at Kona - but only one of several forces found the enemy. Hilo was all but abandoned - only two subs contested it. Today our focus on was on defending Molokai - and that effort worked. We got the CD and AA from Hilo up there - and also sent in part of a RCT by air and sea. Today - we will focus on getting supplies to Molokai - which with mountains - is hard to take. But Lahaina is even more important - it is also a Level 3 port and Level 2 airfield - and it has fuel and supples we would rather were not captured but consumed. Since he gave us time - we will make him pay for it - attempting to send in the infantry there. Fast transport won't work- he has a major SAG there: so we will fly em in. Wholly undamaged airfields at Oahu make this possible. We offloaded some light transports, flew in the first C-87s, and will continue to use C-47s and flying boats - more of the latter flying in to help. Taking Lahaina in when it has infantry is expensive - again due to mountainous terrain. And whatever happens there - these units won't just die - but will withdraw to Molokai - to fight again.

In the Philippines a regiment of Philippine Scouts made it to Naga - so he has to fight his way out. At least artillery will make it to back them up before he tries. It is a delaying action - not that we will stop him there - we will stop him at Lucena. But every day a hex is not occupied it generates supplies - and we also regard attrition as our friend. The more supplies - the stronger the defense is - and the more it costs to eject it.

In Malaya it appears a brigade will enter Singora today - same logic as Naga - and also historical. The British invaded Thailand to forstall invasion - but were rebuffed by Royal Thai border defense units - something you find in Thai histories but not British ones (except thebe British admit they tried to go in - never what went wrong). The problem here is at Kota Bahru - but again - as in Hawaii - he failed to attack - giving us time to move up units - and move out the aviation engineers. We should have lost Hudsons there - I forgot to evacuate them - but didn't - because he didn't take the position.

The superb Allied air performance yesterday came at a price - almost everywhere we need to stand down - and rebuild morale. Only a small strike can happen in Malaya or Philippines - and none at all in Hawaii - today. We are focused on air defense - and in Hawaii - on air transport as well - but that may lead to a critical and unexpected victory at Lahaina. We will see. Hilo is a fine port - but only a Level 1 airfield - too small to attack from. It is less critical than Lahaina. At the moment he depends entirely on carrier air - and that cannot be too great after three days of action.

10 December 1941 (Hawaii) 11 December (Far East)

The night turn began with a failed ASW engagement of USN sub Pompano by 3 IJN DD just East of Lahaina.

Then I-1 at Lahaina itself got into an ASW tangle with 8 USN ships which was nearly as indecisive, but in which the sub did take one hit. Two of the USN ships were CL not armed for ASW - so apparently this was partly a surface action.

Next USN sub Thresher got a shot at CV Kaga at Molokai. She hit her too - but torpedoes failed to detonate. 3 IJN DD counterattacked, and scored 3 hits on Thresher - pretty unusual and good shooting for IJN DD at this stage of the war. It did provide an intense moment - Kaga in the sights - and even the fact that she was hit by torpedoes did not leave a warm cuddly feeling.

An IJN TF including CA Takao, CL Nagara, 4 DD and a PC unit, detected, engaged, hit and caused fires on USN submarine Argonaut NW of Midway.

Next the USN BB Tennessee led a strong force of ten DD/DM into Hilo - engaging the heavy escorts detached from Kiddo Butai: 4 Fujimoto class BB: Kongo, Hiei, Haruna and Kirishima - accompanied by torpedo cruiser Kitakami and DD Oyashio. The Kit seems to have regarded the night as one for sightseeing - never firing a shot. In spite of that, the IJN did well and the USN did poorly: 5 hits total on two IJN BB of no significance; 29 hits, some heavy 16.1 inch, on 5 Allied ships including Tennessee herself, all but one set on fire, and DD Monaghan heavily damaged - so heavily it sank without any additional hits in the next action.
The two forces reengaged later in the night: The Allies scored 8 insignificant hits on three BB; the Japanese got 37 hits on six ships - DD Bagley and DMS Perry were sunk outright - Tennessee and DD MacDonough were on fire and heavily damaged.

3 RN MTB units caught an unescorted tanker in the Northern South China Sea. For a moment - at close range - it seemed like a significant Allied victory was in the offing. But no torpedoes were fired. 3 shell hits - 2 HMG and 1 20 mm - started a fire on the tanker.

IJN sub Ro-46 torpedoed AK Taiping near Great Natuna Island - but the torpedoes failed to detonate.

10 December 1941 Morning Air Turn

It began dull enough - a Ki-46 discovered 4 Buffalos on CAP at Kuantan, Malaya.

48 Zeros escorted a Ki-46 recon plane over Manila - and met 20 P-40s. But after the first shots fired they all bugged out. 1 P-40E lost. 1 Ki-46 destroyed apparently by AA fire.
89 Zeros escorted a Ki-46 over Clark - and met 7 Allied fighters of 3 types - shooting down 4 before the rest bugged out.

A Ki-49 I recon flight over Molokai resulted in a damaged bomber.

5 Ki-48s caused 28 casualties to the ROC 23rd Field Army. This may have been a biological warfare attack using 25 kg Uji anthrax bombs.
9 more caused 28 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 91st Field Army.
10 Claudes caused 13 casualties to the ROC 50th Guerilla Regiment.
36 more caused 29 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.
3 Ki-48s caused 8 casualties to the Szechuan 20th Field Army.
22 Ki-30s caused 22 casualties and 2 guns lost to the ROC 51st Guerilla Regiment.
16 Ki-27s caused 21 casualties to the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment.
28 Ki-48s caused 64 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Hopei Militia Regiment.

22 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 48 casualties to the Philippine Army 3rd Battalion, 12th Regiment.

17 US bombers of 6 types attaked Kiddo Butrai near Molokai. They were escorted by a dozen fighters of 3 types. Met by 35 Zeros on CAP - the entire force bugged out after the air air action. 2 Zeros destroyed, 1 damaged. 5 US bomber and 4 US fighters lost, every other flying machine involved in this acion bugged out. For a moment - seeing all those 9 types of Allied planes - it seemed frightening.

2 Hudsons missed ML Kasuga Maru in the South China Sea.

3 B-17s put 3 bombs into AP Ozan Maru at Bako - which had no CAP: oops.
3 more B-17s missed AK Shinano Maru at Legaspi. 5 Claude on CAP were ineffective.

3 A-20B escorted by 4 P-40B ran in on Hilo. 33 Japanese fighters of 3 types on CAP (most of them Me-109s based on the undamaged Hilo airfield itself). 1 A-20 and 1 P-40 shot down - the rest bugged out. Once again we see - no matter the situation - it is a bad idea to fly demoralized air units.

4 Vals escorted by 10 Zeros put 2 bombs into DD Delfridge at Molokai. [1 250 kg, 1 60 kg] 1 Vals damaged.
44 Vals, 53 Kates - escorted by 52 Zeros - attacked 10 Allied ships at Molokai - the same hex as the KB is in.
13 torpedo hits on 6 ships: CA San Francisco and New Orleans, CL Phoenix and Honolulu, DD Allen and DM Tracy. 22 bombs into the same 3 ships. All cruisers on fire, both CA and both DD heavily damaged. 3 more bombs into 2 more ships: DM Gamble and Sicard. Sicard on fire and heavily damaged. 3 Vals and 5 Kates lost, 7 more Kates damaged.

29 more Kates escorted by 23 more Zeros then ran in on BB California and Oklahoma and CL Raleigh in the same hex.
9 torpedo hits total on all 3 ships - 8 of them into the BB. Oklahoma and Raleigh on fire, Oklahoma heavily damaged.

19 Army Ki-50s - non-torpedo armed Bettys - caught two river vessels up river on the Pearl at Wuchow: 9 hits on tiny river tanker Mei Hsia and AK ROC Hong Kong Junk Group.

In mid ocean - not too far from Midway - a Japanese TF with seaplane carriers sent 4 Jakes on a bombing mission which missed AP William Ward Borroughs.

10 December 1941 Afternoon Air Turn

This began exactly like the Morning turn - with a Ki-46 recon flight encountering 4 Buffalos over Kuantan Malaya.

2 B-17s out of Clark missed CA Kinugasa at Cebu. 4 Petes on CAP were ineffective. Both bombers were damaged. The B-17s were at 2000 feet - which is probably wrong. Most RHS players don't fly B-17s below 5000 feet before skip bombing was invented - and WITP bombing is too accurate at low altitudes in part to accomplish this. Note however that there is a built in penalty for not honorigh this recommendation: at 2000 feet you take .30 and .50 cal MMG and HMG fire - and RHS has lots of these - thousands.

Another air strike ran in on Hilo out of Oahu: 3 B-18s escorted by 2 Wildcats. Just like in the morning, each unit bugged out after the first engagement - 1 of each was lost - no penetration to target area - no Japanese air losses.

3 Kingfishers out of Cebu missed DD Asagiri at Tacloban.

2 Hudsons missed CL Kuma in the Gulf of Thailand (then usually called the Gulf of Siam - the shift to Thailand being a nationalist move by the dictator of Thailand not yet widely recognized - he was the most successful of leaders of Axis countries - and returned to power in the 1950s).

15 Vals and 36 Kates escorted by 8 Zeros ran in on a 4 ship surface TF at Molokai: 9 bomb hits on CL St Louis, set on fire; 5 torpedo hits shared by CL Phoenix and Honolulu and DD Schley, all on fire, heavily damaged.

10 Vals escorted by 44 Zeros put 6 bombs into BB Tennessee at Lahaina.

6 Kates escorted by 21 more Zeros could not find CA San Francisco in the Molokai hex. This indicates she was already sunk.
7 Vals escorted by 10 Kates could not find BB Oklahoma in the same hex, indicating the same thing.

A feature of the KB air strikes is the absense of Allied fighter cover for the Allied ships - even days after the war began - by which time there should be Allied fighters working back up - and warships should either be distant from the air threats, in port or covered by fighters as much as possible.

10 December 1941 - Late afternoon/evening - post air phase events.

I-170 torpedoed and sank heavily damaged CL Phoenix at Molokai.

Dutch sub KXI attacked an IJN ASW TF in the Gulf of Thailand - everybody missed everybody.

TF 84 began landing the Imperial Guards Brigade at Molokai. This unit had already captured Hilo - but the Japanese want a Level 2 airfield - and fear the massive minefield at Lahaina. Molokai cannot be reached by invasion groups on the first day. 90 CD shots fired, 4 hits on AP Nissen Maru and DD Kagero - DD Arashi missed entirely - no serious damage. 356 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 41 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost to counterbattery fire.

TF 149 landed troops at Tacloban: 183 Japanese casualties. Lack of CD shots indicates the defenders have left the hex.

TF 180 landed troops at Stroeng Trang Cambodia: 87 casualties.

43 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 Allies at Hong Kong - 2:1 odds Fort Level 4 - 727 japanese casualties, 28 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 273 Allied casualties, 10 guns lost, 4 vehicles lost.

Undefended Lucena Luzon captured by 22000 Japanese troops. This location - right beside Manila - should have been defended.
2600 Japanese tried to do the same thing at Lemon Bay - but failed because a weak Philippine Divison of 6100 had moved in. 233 Japanese casualties, 4 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 19 Allied casualties.

11 December 1941 (Hawaii) 12 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with continuing landings at Molokai by TF84. 20 CD shots fired. DD Arashi targeted but missed. 41 Japanese casualties.
Pre dawn landings involved missing DD Hamakaze with 9 CD shots - and 31 more casualties (all from Imperial Guards Brigade - veterans of Hilo - on their second attack of the war).

TF149 unloaded troops at Tacloban: 8 Japanese casualties.

I-172 missed DM Tracy at Pearl Harbor.

Ro-49 shelled (but missed with torpedoes) a Dutch AK with a name that translates Sunda Strait.

USN sub Dolphin missed an AK West of Hawaii - a DE and MSW unit also missed in counterattack.

I-172 torpedoed DD Allen at Pearl Harbor.

The day turn began with a sweep of Manila by 89 Zeros. 18 P-40s on CAP of which 3 were shot down.

3 Ki-48s caused 31 casualties to the ROC 23rd Field Army. This likely was a bw attack.
10 Ki-27s caused 8 casualties to the ROC 50th Guerilla Regiment.
9 Ki-48s caused 34 casualties to the ROC 100th Field Army.
52 Japanese bombers of 3 types caused 70 casualties and 4 guns lost to the ROC 88th Field Army.
8 Ki-48s caused 8 casulaties to the Szechuan 20th Field Army.
27 Ki-30s caused 41 casualties and 2 guns lost to the ROC 51st Guerilla Regiment.
15 more caused 35 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment.
29 Ki-48s caused 33 casualties to the Hopei Militia Regiment (a Provincian Guerilla Regiment).
19 more caused 6 more casualties to the same unit.

27 Ki-51s caused 39 casualties and 1 gun lost to the RAF No 2 Forward Air Station at Tavoy. This unit has withstood two attacks by an airborne brigade - and this strike is meant to soften it up for another such attack. [It worked as we shall see]

4 Kingfisher observation planes from Pearl Harbor attampted to attack Kiddo Butai - with 15 fighters of 2 types in escort.
71 Zeros on CAP. 9 Allied fighters and 1 Kingfisher destroyed.
Kiddo Butai returned the compliment - no doubt an exchanged air strike: 55 Vals, 18 Kates and 55 Zeros - but no Allied CAP at all. 5 DD were attacked (at Pearl Harbor) shared 36 bomb hits; 4 of them shared 6 torpedo hits as well. All on fire, heavy damage - most or all sank: Ward, Selfridge, Worden, Phelps, Alawin.
31 Vals straggled in late and put 17 bombs into already damaged CL Helena - she didn't survive the day.

12 Ju-88s and 19 Ki-43s raided Rangoon. 30 AVG P-40s and 12 Buffalos on CAP: 1 of each shot down. 3 Ki-43s and 1 Ju-88 lost, 4 Ju-88s damaged. 1 bomb hit each on AR Hatian and 2 AKs. Also 1 port hit.

3 Kingfishers came back for another try at Kiddo Butai. 8 P-40s escorted them. 68 Zeros on CAP. 3 P-40s and 1 Kingfisher shot down before the rest gave up.

3 Hudsons missed LSD Shinshu Maru at Davao - 8 Zeros and 2 Petes on CAP shot 1 down.

14 Vals put 6 bombs into DM Gamble at Pearl Harbor.
19 Vals then put 16 bombs into BB Tennessee at the same place. 46 Zeros escorted.
17 more put 9 bombs into BB California at the same place: 2 lost, 2 damaged by AA fire.
17 Kates put 4 torpedoes into CL St Louis and 1 more into DD Schley at Pearl. 1 lost, 1 damaged by AAA.
16 Vals put 11 bombs into CL Raleigh in the same place.

6 Ki-49 pre production bombers out of Johnston Island missed AP William Ward Burrows six hexes due North of the island.
This ship has sailed undamged all the way from Wake - in spite of multiple air attacks.

Dutch sub KXVII missed an AK in the Gulf of Thailand. She was hit by DE Tsuga firing DC in response.

I-172 put 2 fish into DD Selfridge at Pearl Harbor - sinking her.

I-154 shelled, torpedoed and sank AK Norse Carrier near Borneo in the Celebes Sea.

18 000 Japanese attacked 15 000 Allies at Kuantan - 2:1 odds - base captured. 118 Japanese casualties, 8 guns lost. 6730 Allied casualties, 4 guns lost, 1135 vehicles lost.

1900 Japanese in an SNLF captured Tacloban from 410 defenders in a Philippine Army battalion. 7 Japanese casualties, 53 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost.

42 000 Japanese captured Hong Kong from 14 000 Allies. 16:1 odds, Fort Level 3. 187 Japanese casualties, 13 guns lost.
13799 Allied casualties, 130 guns lost, 1641 vehicles lost.

1168 troops of the First Raiding Brigade captured Tavoy Burma from 369 survivors of the RAF 2nd Forward Air Station.
6 Japanese casualties. 19 Allied casualties, 1 vehicle lost. Allies retreated toward Victoria Point (because we already own Ye).

4685 men of the Imperial Guards Brigade captured Molokai from 921 defenders. 3 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 4 Allied casualties.

RE: RHS Test 13D: Halsey Stands Forward

Post by el cid again »

12 December 1941 (Hawaii) 13 December (Far East)

After days of hanging out South of Johnston Island - Admiral Halsey's carrier force (Lexington and Enterprise) has moved NE - within striking range of Hawaii or Johnston. For some reason the long range bombers on Johnston have left him alone. It is now necessary to deal with this threat - two full divisions and an equal amount of support troops have entered the area - fast tracked because of success - and it isn't safe to risk all those laden transports near such naval air power. Virtually all the transports have moved to a position covered by the CVL force - while the Kiddo Butai and Main Body (arriving from Midway) are splitting into a fast and slow group to go hunting. We will go for the tanker if he runs - but he has NEVER run - so that isn't likely. It is dangerous to get near those SBDs - but his fighters are as bad as they ever will be - and he has those awful TBDs - likely not to be effective: it will never be safer than now - and we cannot have him in that forward position. Even if he runs it is better than letting him have the option of closing the follow up heavy invasion groups bound for Hawaii. One group of transports stayed at Johnston Island - it badly needs supplies - and also to offload the rest of its support elements - which will happen tonight even if he were to strike the ships tomorrow. Also - they are covered by land based fighters.

The night turn began with USS Trout attacking an AP retiring from Midway - but torpedoes failed to detonate.

Hong Kong mineclearing operations continue.

Ro-42 shelled and torpedoed AP Ruth Alexander near Soerabaja. Being in a shipyard, she might survive.

The day turn began with 10 Ki-51s attacking Changsha China - no effect but 3 bombers lost.
8 Ki-48s caused 8 casualties to the ROC 100th Field Army
7 Ki-48s and 27 Ki-36 caused 100 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Szechuan 20th Field Army.
23 Ki-30s caused 69 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 51st Guerilla Regiment in East China.
12 Ki-21s caused 22 more casualties to the same unit.
4 more failed to harm the 52nd Guerilla Regiment in East China.
20 Ki-30s caused 12 casualties to the elite Hopei Militia Regiment also in East China on the RRLOC.

27 Ki-51s caused 80 casualties to the remnants of the RAF 2nd Forward Air Station. After fighting the First Airborne Brigade to a standstill for days - this unit retreated into Thailand - where it now sits on the RRLOC to Malaya!!! It is nearly extinct however.

An impressive appearing air strike ran in on transports at Molokai out of Oahu - missing 4 ships. These too tired air units should not have tried it. 6 A-20, 8 B-17s, 6 B-18s, 3 P-36, 13 P-40, 2 OS2U-3 and 3 SBD were opposed by only 2 Ki-44 Tojo pre production fithters. 2 P-40s lost, 3 bombers damaged, everybody else was combat ineffective.

2 Hudsons straffed AK Kinkai Maru in the Gulf of Thailand. 4 .30 cal hits.

4 Jakes missed AK William Ward Burroughs - wholly undamaged - sailing right through the entire Japanese fleet - she may make Oahu in a couple of days.

24 000 Japanese attacked 34 000 Allies at Alor Star - no odds - 97 Japanese casualties, 8 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 42 Allied casualties.

The lead RCT of a division - 6224 strong - attacked remnants of 3/12th Battalion at Luoag - driving it down Highway One to Vigan. 94:1 odds.
4 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 32 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost. The unit will likely disappear tomorrow.

13 December 1941 (Hawaii) 14 December (Far East)

The night turn began with 7 Blenheim Night Fighters missing DD Oshio in the Gulf of Thailand.

AP Nissen Maru sank - apparently overcome with flooding.

A MSW TF began mineclearing at newly captured Hong Kong.
The AM Air Phase began iwth 7 Ki-51s scoring 1 port Hit at Changsha Central China. 27 Ki-27 were in escort but no air opposition.
10 Army Ki-33 Claudes failed to harm the ROC 50th Guerilla Regiment in South China.
10 Ki-27s and 33 more Ki-33s caused 8 casualties to the same unit.
11 Ki-48s caused 51 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 100th Field Army.
15 Ki-47 (Army Kates - actually B5M rather than B5N) and 14 Ki-48s caused 50 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 88th Field Army on the main East - West RRLOC.
13 Ki-21s caused 26 casualties to the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment in East China.
21 Ki-48s caused 28 casualties and 1 gun lost to the elite Hopei Guerilla Regiment in East China.
18 more Ki-48s caused 26 more casualties to the same unit.
15 Ki-32s caused 12 more casualties to the same unit.

9 Ju-88s caused 6 casualties to the First Burma Brigade at Moulmein.

25 Nells caused 8 casualties to the RAF 3rd Forward Air Station in Northern Malaya.

9 Bettys missed two TK at Brunei.

4 Ki-48s and 27 Ki-51s hit the Hong Kong Junk Group on the Pearl River, causing heavy damage.

The 21st Independent Infantry Brigade attacked the RAF No 2 Forward Air Station remnants on the Northern end of the Kra Isthmus - 6402 to 99 troops - 92:1 odds - 43 Allied casualties, the Allies retreating further South on the RR line. This unit prevents supplies from Bangkok and points North from reaching Singora and points South.

Undefended Raeing Thailand captured by a Japanese engineering unit.

The leading elements of a reinforced IJA division attacked at Alor Star - failed to achieve odds - and failed to capture the position. 458 Japanese casualties, 29 guns lost. 122 Allied casualties, 4 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

Undefended Stroeng Trang Cambodia captured by a Japanese naval landing party. This minor river port would take months to reach overland using the trail system - so it was captured by amphibious assault from landing craft. It is just South of the falls/rapids which close off the Lower Mekong from the Upper Mekong - a situation that never changes (and never has changed). [French hopes of "a Road to China" were dashed by its discovery by de Bougainville.] The Mekong is navigable far into Laos - and is represented at this time by two interior river systems - seperated at this point. However, if we introduce seasons, we will break it into three sections - seasonally - as part of the river loses its depth in the non-monsoon portion of the year.

RE: RHS Test 13D: Halsey Runs

Post by el cid again »

13 December 1941 Comments

Halsey elected to move his carriers SW from their position NW of Palmyra Island - not quite far enough to be out of detection range - but out of range of KB bombers - and the Johnston Island bombers again failed to fly. I elected to reconsolodate the KB and Main Body - in a position to cover the approach of the main transport convoys to Hawaii. We have not yet got an air base operational on Molokai - and we need to get supplies and troops ashore there for the long seige of Oahu - and until then - the KB's main mission is to cover that force (with over 100 000 combat troops and support troops) The tanker dropped of the scope - apparently moving South as well - and we cannot reliably locate it. As an amphib sailor - I regarded laden transports as the first priority. And operational strategy requires a good forward air base before KB is too depleted to be functional. There are only a few days to get there - these are they - and we don't have time or fuel to chase Halsey all over the Central Pacific Basin.

RE: RHS Test 13D: Hawiian Air Force Strikes!!

Post by el cid again »

14 December 1941 (Hawaii) 15 December (Far East)

The night turn began with Dutch sub KXVII missing AP Hikawa Maru in the Gulf of Thailand.

Allied planes at Georgetown - presumably Blenheim night intruders - were unable to fly due to bad weather.

Otherwise uneventful night turn.

The day turn began with 10 Ki-27s failing to harm the ROC 50th Guerilla Regiment near Kaifeng.
6 Ki-48s caused 7 casualties to the ROC 100th Field Army.
12 more - with Uji BW bombs - plus 14 Army Kates (Ki-47s) - caused 115 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Szechuan 20th Field Army.
20 Ki-32s caused 29 casualties to the ROC 51st Guerilla Regiment in the same hex as the 50th above.
15 more followed up and caused another 29 casualties to the same unit.
However, 21 Ki-21s failed to do any harm at all to the elusive guerillas.
24 Ki-48s caused 26 casualties and 1 gun lost to the elite Hopei Militia Regiment - 120 miles farther East.
19 more caused 29 more casualties to the same unit.
But 15 Ki-30s failed to harm it at all.

21 Ki-21s - escorted by 10 Zeros - caused 34 casualties and 1 vehicle lost to the Indian Army 8th Brigade in Northern Malaya. 3 bombers were damaged.
27 Ki-51s caused 42 casualties to the Indian Army 6th Brigade, also in Northern Malaya.
21 Bettys, 45 Ki-48s and 6 Ki-21s caused 97 casualties and 2 guns lost tot the same unit. 1 Ki-48 lost, 1 damaged.

17 Ki-48s caused 39 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine Army 51st Division on Luzon.

A gigantic air strike out of Oahu ran in on Molokai. Fully 29 (of a theoretical 30 possible) Me-109s were assigned to fly CAP there - but none did. 16 bomb hits on 8 ships (AP, AO, AO, DD, AK, AO, AP, AP, AK ) and 2 torpedoe hits on DD Arashi, which was sunk by them. 1 torpedo hit on AO Akebono Maru - set on fire. 1 TBD lost, 3 SBDs and Kingfisher damaged.
5 B-17s of 2 types and 2 SB2U-2s - failed to harm CL Tama at the same location (Molokai).

Dutch sub KXVII torpedoed and shelled AK Eisho Maru in the South China Sea. The sub took one shell hit in return.

Ro-42 missed AVD Heron - but was hit (once) in reply.

Japanese Ro-42 missed AVD Heron.

Japanese ground bombardment at Alor Star caused 35 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.

6006 Japanese troops (a brigade) attacked 2 Chinese Guerilla Regiments near Kaifeng - achieved 16:1 odds - and both units retreated. 55 Japanese and 35 Allied casualties.

2721 Japanese troops attacked the Hopei Militia Regiment 2 hexes farther East - it had 612 troops - 35:1 odds - 23 Japanese casualties, 123 Chinese casualties, the regiment retreated.

Japanese ground bombardment on the Shanghai RR West of Shanghai caused 27 Chinese casualties and 1 gun lost.

Japanese ground assault failed to achieve odds at Moulmein Burma. 320 Japanese casualties, 7 guns lost.
8 Allied casualties, 3 guns lost.

RE: RHS Test 13D: What went wrong at Molokai

Post by el cid again »

What went wrong at Molokai was that the defending base force destroyed the runway to the point CAP could not fly -
I failed to notice - and assumed the landed group of short range fighters was enough. Meanwhile - Halsey's carrier force had caused concern re transports - and I sent carriers on a wild goose chase - failing to get them - but also failing to provide either backup CAP for Molokai or to strike the Pearl Harbor airfields again. So he was able to get in with unopposed bombers in numbers. Even the ships that did land cargo didn't land very much - because the port also was badly damaged. The base force commander was a Samouri - and because he did it by attacking infrastructure instead of making a heroic fight - I missed it.

RE: RHS Test 13D: Halsey joins the Hawiian Air Force!!

Post by el cid again »

15 December 1941 (Hawaii) 16 December (Far East)

In this unusual turn, it becomes clear that the Halsey led USN CV TF flew off its aircraft to Oahu - and these repaired up to be able to join Hawiian Air Force units in attacks on the inbound transport TFs today. We are way ahead of plan - and so there are a lot more ships and units embarked than usual at this stage in the operating plan. Two full divisions and an equal number of support troops were on the potentially in range target TFs. Another name for the day might be The Hawaiian Turkey Shoot.

Less obvious - we sent 2/3 of the Kiddo Butai after Halsey - and they were one hex out of striking range of his now empty flight decks when the day ended. They lack the fuel or fuel efficiency to chase him - but it was a dramatic near miss. And now we know he has no planes - and have him detected - something might be done.

The night turn began with USS Triton missing DD Hayate SW of Midway. Just as well - the poor Hayate is retiring toward Kwajalein with extensive damage.

Japanese MSW cleared mines at Hong Kong.

Ro-47 torpedoed and sank AK Yochow just East of Borneo.

The AM air Phase began with 8 Ki-51s causing a port hit at Changsha China. 27 Ki-27s escorted - just in case.

Two Ki-21s failed to achieve anything at Alor Star.

11 Nells failed to achieve anything at Baguio City. 48 Zeros were escorting - and 2 Ju-88s flew recon. It was a fishing expedition - seeking the remnants of the Philippine Air Force.
43 Zeros and a Ki-46 recon plane did the same thing at Manila.
12 Ki-21s and 94 Zeros - with another Ki-46 recon plane - found the enemy at Clark. This was a bigger engagement because we expected them to be there. 24 Allied fighters of 4 types on CAP. 18 shot down. 5 Ki-21s damaged by AAA.
16 Allied casualties on the ground, 29 other hits.

Concerned (justifiably as we will see) about massive numbers of bombers reported at Oahu - 22 Ki-49s (some of them recon ships) hit the air base complex there. Astonishingly - no CAP. 5 were damaged by AAA. 1 F4F-3 destroyed on the ground. 13 Allied casualties, 13 other hits.

55 JAAF bombers of 2 types hit the Manchu 52nd Field Army: 124 casualties and 2 guns lost; 2 Ki-51 damaged. 21 Ki-27s escorted.
47 JAAF fighters of 2 types failed to harm the ROC 50th Guerilla Regiment in East China.
8 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 32 casualties to the ROC 62nd Field Army - half of them had Uji BW bombs.
17 Ki-48s and 16 Ki-47s (army Kates) caused 108 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Szechuan 20th Field Army.
9 more Ki-48s caused 41 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.
13 Ki-21s caused 26 casualties to the ROC 52nd Guerilla Regiment.

26 Nells and 55 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 18 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Indian Army 12th Brigade at Alor Star.
11 Bettys with 9 Zeros in escort caused 2 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Indian Army 6th Brigade near Kuantan (inland).
26 Ki-51s caused 105 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Indian Army 15th Brigade in the same hex.
36 Ki-21s caused 69 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.
4 Betty's (with 2 Zeros in company) caused 2 casualties and 1 gun lost to the same unit.

4 Ki-21s and 27 Ki-47s caused 36 casualties to the 2nd Burma Brigade.
9 Ju-88s caused 18 casualties to the Indian Army 16th Brigade. 30 Ki-43s escorted.

21 Ki-48s (with 4 Claudes in escort) caused 92 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Philippine Army 51st Reserve Division.
12 Ki-51s caused 32 casualties to the Philippine 3/12th Battalion in Northern Luzon.
8 Ki-48s failed to harm the same unit - which may be down to zero people.

15 December 1941 AM Air Phase: Hawiian Air Battle

First - a pre strike - probably just planes a bit ahead of the main formation: so massive a deal I thought it was the main effort - came in on the Ni Butai (CVL Force) - escorting transports WSW of Oahu:

Day Air attack on TF at 112,74

Japanese aircraft
F1M2 Pete-FF x 10
Me-109T/A9M1 Mike x 89

Allied aircraft
A-20B Boston x 3
P-36A Mohawk x 7
P-40B Tomahawk x 6
SBD-3/4 Dauntless x 16

Japanese aircraft losses
Me-109T/A9M1 Mike: 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
A-20B Boston: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
P-36A Mohawk: 5 destroyed
P-40B Tomahawk: 6 destroyed
SBD-3/4 Dauntless: 11 destroyed

NOTHING penetrated.

Not so fast - now we found out what really was in store - about 100 bombers of 6 types well escorted by 34 fighters came in - and I feared the CAP might not be up to the job:

4 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
4 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
4 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
2 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
1 x B-18A/B-23/F-2 Bolo bombing at 5000 feet
3 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
1 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
1 x TBD Devastator launching torpedoes at 200 feet
1 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet

2 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
3 x SBD-3/4 Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet

All that for a single bomb hit on a single CVL - probably worth it from my point of view.

15 December 1941 Post Air Phase events

Ro-37 missed a British Tanker North of Borneo.

A Japanese ground assault - 15 000 vs 5 000 Chinese - failed. 135 Japanese casualties, 5 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.
23 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.
Another ground assault - 30 000 Japanese vs 19 000 Chinese - also failed. 391 Japanese casualties, 15 guns lost.
608 Chinese casualties, 23 guns lost. This strange outcome implies poor Chinese supply.
Yet another attack - 34 000 Japanese vs 27 000 Chinese - also failed. 731 Japanese casualties, 25 guns lost.
265 Chinese casualties, 14 guns lost.

Undefended Ilagan was captured by the Japanese.

25 000 Japanese failed to capture Alor Star from 30 000 Allies - but casualties were inverted. 68 casualties on both sides. 5 Japanese guns lost. 1 Allied gun lost and 2 vehicles lost.
