Four more cargo ships and four tankers added to the list. Whilst I am sure Todd has managed to get all his undamaged ships back to port safely Nagumo and KB can reflect on a good result. No doubt a blow that would be felt keenly if it were my shipping under the hammer but in the long run this is but a little setback for the Allied cause. All the same I’m hoping it came as a nasty shock for Todd and the following comment from his email after KB first showed its hand probably best sums up his feelings on the matter.

‘Nothing short of a disaster for the Allies. This is the first of many turns that'll cause me nightmares. What's the KB doing so far south and where the hell are my search planes?’

Indeed; where were the Allied search planes? I’d like to think I did learn a thing or two about running silent from my Enterprise foray and of course there is a huge gap to exploit once convoys leave the protection of LBA. About the only thing to be concerned about is CV cover for the convoy and given the lack of CVs in the Pacific I couldn’t see Todd using his precious carriers for convoy protection. Besides I think this convoy was running in an area that Todd thought was probably well out of harm’s way and therefore the convoy was in very safe waters. Only thing that didn’t come off was my recon reporting battleships and cruisers hanging around with the convoy. Maybe just bad reporting but if they were there Todd should consider them lucky to be still above the waves.

Air: At Mandalay 12 Wellington III and 12 Hudson I mount an attack and are met by a CAP of 16 A6M2. 4 Wellington and 5 Hudson are destroyed and the attack is beaten off. Later in the day a force of 9 Blenheim IV approached and is met by the same CAP. 4 Blenheim are chopped from the sky and this attack turns away.
East of Myitkyina 28th Chinese Division is attacked by 44 Betty with 13 casualties reported and 1 gun lost.

Air: Northeast of Homan 60th Chinese Corps is attacked by 24 Sonia escorted by 5 A6M2. Today the Chinese have a CAP of 16 I-153c in the air. 1 Sonia is claimed and the attack breaks off its run.
Ground: Japanese deliberate attack northeast of Homan achieves assault odds of 1 to 1 and results in 649 Japanese casualties and 48 guns lost to 496 Chinese casualties and 9 guns lost.

Wow an unsupported bomber attack on Mandalay and the CAP performs brilliantly. I guess this was a testing raid by Todd to see what would happen. I doubt he will give me too many opportunities like this between now and when he has long range fighters to escort his bombers.
My forces are massing for an assault to clear the road leading into Homan.
KB has finished the job and is returning to the oilers based in the northern parts of the Coral Sea.

The following message, however, was received at Tokyo.


Message from Moscow delivered to the Japanese embassy 5/25/42 as follows:

The uneasy truce between our countries was violated by your forces six months ago. We now feel that there is a need on our part to be able to verify that Japanese forces are observing the truce and not preparing for offensive actions against the Soviet Union. Therefore it has been decided that the Soviet Union will reserve the right to overfly Japanese held territory, up to a 240 mile limit from existing boarders. These will be unarmed recon missions for the defense of the Motherland only. We will not grant the same rights to Imperial Japanese forces as they will only be used for offensive purposes. Any overflights by Japanese planes will be considered an act of war. Any attempt to shoot down Soviet aircraft on their peaceful verification flights will be considered an act of war.

No reply to this message is required as there will be no negotiations in this matter.

I can’t remember if I bothered to reply other than to clarify the 240 mile limit. My position is to sit tight and hope that Stalin still has his hands full with the Germans...... in the long run though expect to see the Soviets cashing in on American gains in the Pacific.

Back to matters at hand.

At Amboina Japanese forces are victorious and capture the base forcing Molukken Garrison to retreat. 4th Coastal Gun Battalion and 22nd DAF Base Force surrender.

South of Palembang the long awaited Japanese ground assault is launched and results in the surrender of Zuid Garrison Battalion, 1st W S Garrison Battalion, So. Sumatra Garrison Battalion, 5th Dutch Naval Base Force and 4th DAF Base Force.

Hey there Flaggelant. Todd and I are getting in a turn a day on most days so it is steady as she goes. We have just made it to 1st August 1942. Not sure how far behind Todd’s AAR is but mine as you can see is a good 2 months shy of the action at the moment.

From memory I think I still have Medan to mop up and a couple of outposts on Sumatra still await conquest but most of the important places have now fallen. Dili and the islands north of Darwin are also still held by the Allies. As for the main production sites they are mine and the time has arrived to garner as much out of them as I can.

I’ve gone through all my units that should be in range of Soviet recon and turned them off. It seems to have worked as two months have gone by without a single Japanese combatant so much as shooting one bullet at a soviet spy plane. Not sure if this is the correct tactic to adopt against the Russians but we’ll see how it goes over the course of the game. I have no doubt Todd will open up a front here when he senses it is time to do so.

Fighters in HI and Kwangtung are for the most part on training. There are only a few Nate squadrons left and during July my production lines have finally ramped up Tojo and Tony production. I have been working towards Tony production more so and will be replacing Oscars with Tony when I can. It is about 6 to 7 weeks away in AAR time though before the Tony and Tojo start production. My main emphasis regarding fighters has been the Zero force based at Ichang... so far they have done outstandingly well against the elements of the AVG which pop up in Chungking from time to time. Todd has made no comment about his AVG loses but I’m sure it must be causing him some concern.

My PP is spent mainly on transferring planes and assigning leaders. Sometimes I have been transferring over lesser ground units too. I have a fairly good stock pile of PP at present.

As for Kitakami she is certainly not made for bombardment duties... so long ago now I can't remember if I deliberately put her on that task or plain forget that she is far too thin skinned for that caper. She is still kicking so there were no dire consequences to this action. I'm sure her captain and crew enjoyed getting in on the action.[:)]

I think in a previous report about 1 week ago in game time I reported that the road to Homan had been opened. It hadn’t with several Chinese units still blocking the way. I’m hoping my memory is serving me correctly now and this time the road is indeed clear for my forces to march upon Homan. The defeated units doing the blocking and now in retreat where the 74th, 3rd New and 60th Chinese Corps. Judging from the combat results a difficult bunch to winkle out but they are gone now and Homan will be the next Chinese city in the sights of the Japanese Army.

Ground: My forces attempting to grab the T-junction on the track between Myitkyina and Yunan run into Chinese forces. They also have to assault them whilst making a cross river attack whilst fording the Salween River. In a bloody shock attack the Japanese achieve 0 to 1 assault odds and report 2129 casualties, 27 guns and 2 vehicles lost.

China
Air: At Chungking the Japanese set out to sweep the skies again. This time 78 A6M2 and 27 A6M3 take on 33 I-16c. 5 A6M2 are lost from the Japanese force whilst 18 of the Chinese planes are reported destroyed.
At Homan 8 Kate, 16 Ann and 21 Sonia escorted by 6 Oscar bomb 87th Chinese Corps and cause 82 casualties and 2 guns lost.

Marginally outnumbered in the attack [5068 Japanese troops and 35 guns against 7574 Allied troops and 46 guns] the Japanese used the terrain to good effect and of course are confronting what is likely to be less well drilled Chinese troops. I expect from here on in the Japanese forces should be able to dig in and maintain their position whilst further reinforcements make their way to the front line.

Wow the AAR for the month of May 1942 has taken some time to knock over.... started it way back on October 8 last year! By way of review, though, it has been a busy month. The stand out highlights has been the continuing aerial battles over Imphal and Chungking with a host of Japanese aces being recorded this month. Medan has coped an aerial pounding throughout the month. In China my attack has refocussed upon capturing Homan and by the end of the month the road to Homan had been cleared of Chinese forces and the siege was just beginning.

Bases captured by Japanese forces included Palembang, Sinkep Island, Muntok, Raba, Padang, Amboina, Bulla and Lunga.

Of course probably the two most important events during the month – KBs convoy ambush and the demand by the Soviet Union for spy flights (just to add something extra to the mix).

Overall planes loss from all causes for the month of May 1942 was Japan 169 to Allied 203.

a CVE on ASW duty sounds like a strange idea to me?
i do use AV's & cs to scout/lure subs, but CV's arent in my list of ASW weapons (what if they hit one??)

an important point on aircraft on ASW duty is XP, i believe you need to be at about 80 XP to get some decent ASW results.
newly arrived cv's often have bad xp ratings in the squadrons, might want to check (especially since you get some land based val & kates with 80-ish xp at the start, might want to swap them for the low xp cv based planes, if your still asw-ing with cv's)

newly arrived cv's often have bad xp ratings in the squadrons, might want to check (especially since you get some land based val & kates with 80-ish xp at the start, might want to swap them for the low xp cv based planes, if your still asw-ing with cv's)

Well it might seem a little unorthodox but it was a regular feature of the Atlantic war. I certainly wourldn't be using my CVs or CVLs in this role and my other CVEs are tied up in a dedicated carrier task force of some kind. This one was just for something different to see if something good might come of it... part of my learinig experience. Good point on the 80XP factor.... had a look at the Vals I put onboard and they only rate a combined value of 73. I'll be scouting around to see what better offerings I might have to increase this ships potency. As Unyo turned up without planes I had to go hunting to put something on board in any case.

We'll see how she goes over time.

China
Air: At Homan 7 Kate, 12 Ann and 11 Sonia are met by 17 I-16c. 1 Kate and 2 Sonia are destroyed in the air. On the ground 17 casualties are reported.
Ground: At Homan Japanese bombardment causes 255 casualties.
East of Homan Japanese and Chinese forces meet in the field. A Japanese bombardment results in 37 Japanese casualties and 6 guns lost to 10 Chinese casualties and 1 gun lost.
Japanese forces have made it to the road south of Homan. This Japanese force is subjected to Chinese bombardment which causes 4 casualties and 1 gun lost.
