Somehow, i doubt even the USN would put a six-year-old in charge of a CV group (the current John McCain was born Aug 29, 1936)... however, the Senator is John McCain
III, and both his dad and granddad were 4-star admirals on retirement... i am guessing this was his granddad.
EDIT: The juxtaposition of Bush and Dashiell is nice, but i think there are a couple or more of other current politicians (less famous) also in the list of DDs. [:)]
REEDIT: It turns out it was apparently his granddad - Adm. John "Slew" McCain, who led USN CV TFs during WW2... born 1884 and died just after Japan's surrender ceremony at age 61. His son (the Senator's father) a submariner during WW2, also was (eventually) a 4-star admiral, and they they became the first father-son pair ever to achieve four star admiral rank in the U.S. Navy.
